“Comfortable hotel, good food, excellent staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 April 2014

I visited and stayed here during March for 1 night on a reconnaisance trip before the main event in April - a wedding at Alnwick castle, when I stayed for 3 nights. Before and during my first visit, i agreed a great discount with the manager Gary, for all our wedding guests that booked 1 or more nights for the wedding weekend and in response, 82 of our party stayed here (they have 53 rooms). Our whole party had nothing but praise for the hotel, rooms, cleanliness, staff and food. Gary even arranged for the bar to stay open an extra 2 hours after the wedding night finished at the castle.
Most of our party ate dinner here on the 1st night. I can recommend the chicken teryaki and the steak and ale pie. However, there are alternative restaurants in the town, approx 1.5 miles away.
Alnwick Castle and Gardens are both worth a visit and groups of 14 or more receive approx 25% admission discount, if booked in advance.
While you are here, if you need a taxi, I can also recommend AA Taxis. If you have a large party, the manager, Steve will be glad to discuss discounted fares.
The only downside is for anyone who is a light sleeper. The hotel is adjacent to the A1 and there is some traffic noise at night, so take your ear plugs.
Recommended trips in the area - Alnmouth and Bamburgh have nice beaches. Great castles at Alnwick, Bamburgh, Walkworth, Lindisfarne and Berwick upon Tweed which also has a lovely walk around the top of the Elizabethan town walls. Nice drives in the Kielder forest. Pretty marina at Amble and a lovely, unusual extensive stately home and grounds at Cragside.
A visit well recommended, however take your warm clothing as there is always a cold wind coming off the North Sea.

Room Tip: ask for one near the entrance, away from the A1 main road

A super-comprenehsive review which really shows the level of service we offer to ensure all our guests enjoy a first class stay. We're delighted you and your guests enjoyed such a special time with us. We certainly do offer discounts for larger groups including wedding guests. Please ask us! Hope to welcome you again soon. Thank you for the five stars too.

Stayed here as a huge party for my daughters wedding, all friends and family very impressed with each and every member of staff. people say people from north east are happy people and found this to be so true.
every member of staff from the bedroom maids to Brendon the Handyman come driver were all wonderful, you felt you were almost part of an extended family.
Food was good, place was clean, well priced and cant wait to visit again and explore wonderful Northumberland.
thank you all keep up the great work

We stayed in a family room here for one night earlier this month and loved it. The room was well kept and clean and a decent size for a family of 3. It was quiet at night and we had a great night's sleep. Would definitely stay here again.

We had dinner and breakfast in the restaurant and found both meals to be really nice.

The staff were also all friendly, helpful and efficient.

Stayed at the hotel for 4 nights, opened less than 2 years ago, large modern room but alas too near the A1 - the architect must have had his hearing aid switched off when visiting the site to set out plans. Rooms need triple glazing. Breakfast is ample and the chef must have a row of microwaves as the sausage and bacon are chewy. Eggs could be better. Friendly staff and top marks to Dan who was always on duty and very cheerful. Main menu is alright but some simpler pub type meals would improve it. Again, thank goodness for the microwave. Would I stay there again, yes if I could be guaranteed a quiet room!!

We had a family room and it was perfect. Our room was extremely clean, spacious and comfortable. We had two great nights sleep.
I had read the reviews before hand & felt a little concerned with the comments about the A1. We stayed on that side of the hotel and honestly it was not a problem, you can't hear the traffic or any noise at all. My children slept soundly as did we.
The staff were lovely and very helpful on arrival. Breakfast was also great with the choice of cereals or full English buffet.
Very good value for money, thank you for a great stay!

My daughters booked myself and my wife into the Hogs Head for a couple of nights as a birthday present. Like many other reviewers I was initially dismayed on how close to the A1 the hotel was located.
However, this wasn't a problem as we never heard any traffic even though we were facing the car park and quite close to the main road.
As we had a four hour drive we decided to walk into town to stretch our legs which took about 30 mins for us middle aged couple.
The double room was very spacious with a king size bed;WIFI was also available.
The hotel was quiet for a Friday so we ate in the restaurant where we found the menu adequate but not an excessive choice (no specials on this particular day)
The breakfast was a very good self service full English.
On Saturday night the hotel was very busy but we ate out anyway. Breakfast was quite hectic Sunday morning but the staff copped with the influx of people from what appeared to be a wedding party.
The hotel is ideally located for exploring Northumberland. Good food, beer and bed. Couldn't ask for anything more. Staff were courteous and very helpful.
I wouldn't hesitate to stop here again

The hotel is clean and well kept; the rooms equally so and very spacious. The breakfast was substantial and quite reasonable for this type of hotel. Nothing to write home about but fine for what it is. Unfortunately we didn't sleep well as the room we had faced the A1 and very near the bar. There was a light on outside for most of the night which shone into the room, the traffic noise was audible even with the windows closed and people were coming and going for a lot of the night. Probably wouldn't go again.

That's a shame to hear. The noise from the A1 is minimal and rooms are far quieter than town centre accommodation.
