Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: The Aln Valley Railway is re-opening the branch railway line which ran from Alnmouth on the Edinburgh to London main line up to Alnwick. Lionheart Station (use NE66 2HT for satnav) is open on advertised days, with parking, entry to museum, engine shed and displays of rolling stock all free. Rides are available at modest fares for short trips in a fully restored carriage behind a steam locomotive, or brake van rides hauled by diesel or on BUZZ, the Wickham trolley. The Buffet Stop cafe is open for teas, coffees, traybakes and sandwiches. Combine a visit to the railway with visits to Alnwick's other attractions for a really good day out.

We arrived Sunday afternoon to find a vintage vehicle rally was in full swing. We were impressed with how much this railway has achieved in such a short space of time when you consider 18 months ago it was just a field. We enjoyed our brake van ride the 500yds or so to the end of the line and can't wait to it's extended onto the original track bed. The staff were friendly, the cafe served some nice cakes and there was a lot of extras to visit with the loco shed, small museum and a coach selling fund raising items. Well worth a visit and we'll be back.

Had a brilliant afternoon at this site, well worth a visit. The staff are so friendly and helpful ... and, as is often the case with steam trains, are so dedicated to bringing this line to life again!! Visitors can have a look around at the engines that are being restored, the Pullman carriage renovations are amazing ... thank you to Chris for taking the time to tell us all about them!! A small part of the track is in use and the short train journey is well worth doing. Once you have bought your ticket, you can ride again and again, yes, it is only a short journey, but will be longer in the future, so please go along and support this wonderful project. Nice little café there too, yummy cakes ..... we will all be back ! Thanks to the staff - great chatting to you all. Good Luck = keep up the good work!!

Great trip to Aln Valley Railway on Sunday for the PLEG charter www.pleg.org.uk. Staff were very very friendly and made all our members really welcome. Great breakfast rolls in the café. Very happy to help us enthusiasts get photos and find the identities of vehicles. A must visit for families and enthusiasts in the area.

We popped into the Aln Valley Railway project after a day out in Alnwick, it's free to visit and look around the sheds where they are restoring the trains and carriages. My mum stayed in the cafe whilst the rest of us looked around. There's a tiny museum and restored train to look at. If you want to ride on the little train it's £3 per person, it doesn't go far but it's good fun and the driver tells you about the project and their vision as you chug along.
Everyone was really friendly and helpful and eager to share their passion, you probably only need 30 minutes or so to visit (depending on your level of interest) but it's worth it to see a nice project and enthusiastic volunteers.
