“Enjoy a stroll through the gardens”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 May 2014

Arguably the home of our modern democracy with Earl Grey so passionate about electoral reform. The garden was relatively good value with plenty of time to amble through the woods at a time of year when lots was happening......new plants coming through amidst the fading early growers. The gardener were particularly helpful in answering questions about plants. There are plenty of walks around the garden and down to the gorgeous Northumberland coast. The large site plan in the Visitors Centre gives an excellent overall impression of the Gardens......and if you're lucky there are red squirrels to be seen. The tulip meadows in the front of the house were interesting to see although a bit faded given the time of year.

“Great on a sunny day!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 May 2014

Last day of our Northumberland holiday, and the sun shined. Not been to Howick Hall before. The gardens were beautiful, particularly the Silverwood, and we enjoyed a good walk through the arboretum. Not over keen on the tea served in the ballroom, but the natural beauties outweighed this. Magnolia and Camelia gave splendid colour. Map and numbering system for walks were particularly useful in the older part of the garden, but the standard dropped in the newer arboretum, and many of the posts there were confusing. Yes - admission is expensive for just a garden, but on a sunny day, it was well worth it.

“Beautiful flowers, quiet paths, nice tea.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 April 2014

A nice place for a walk if in the area. Entry was under £8 possibly a little expensive for what is in reality just a park.

You receive a map of the paths around the park. There isn't entry into the hall as such and a small part of the gardens is private. The gardens are divided in geographical areas of the world with flowers to match.

However, it is private and tranquil if you can avoid the screaming children these places seem to attract. I would perhaps bring a picnic and sit somewhere quiet or if you have no provisions there is a nice cafe at the hall.

In summary a nice afternoon or morning time filler if in the area.

“Good and not so good”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 April 2014 via mobile

Gardens are lovely for a gentle walk round. Paths are easy. Some extended walks too. Visited in late April and the rhododendrons and magnolias were beautiful and such amazing colours. Was too late for the daffodils but I remember the daffodil bank being quite spectacular when I have visited previously. There is a small visitor centre now - nothing too amazing but worth popping in to find out where the best areas of the gardens are to visit at different times of year. It is a shame more of the plants are not labelled as I feel it would enhance the enjoyment and help visitors to be more aware of the origins of the plants. The tea room is not quite as good as it has been in the past. Whilst the tea is excellent, as you would expect (!), the coffee was not - despite the advertised extra £1 for a 'strong and large', it was a normal sized mug full of what seemed like some quite weak filter coffee. The variety of cakes did not inspire too much - where had that fabulous paradise cake gone??? The sandwiches however were fresh and tasty. The scones were a bit dry (it was later In the afternoon but it really shouldn't have made a difference to the quality of what was served) and the jam was lacking in taste. The most puzzling aspect of the visit was that the entrance fee is advertised as £7.70 including a 10% voluntary gift aid - however if you choose not to make the voluntary 10% gift aid you are still charged £7.70!!!!
