“Biggest second hand bookshop in Britain!”
Reviewed 8 July 2009

I was impressed with the size of the place, and was also impressed with the tea and coffee facilities. However due to the sheer number of books, I was overwhelmed and found it hard to browse. I guess you'd need to go with a specific genre or book in mind. However, it was raining cats and dogs at the time, so maybe that affected my mood somewhat!

“A wonderful place to while away the hours”
Reviewed 31 January 2008

This wonderful shop is a 'must visit' for all bookworms. it's like a library where evrything is for sale!

One of the largest second hand bookshops in Britain, there's a massive, ever-changing stock of books, with everything from kids' picture books to in depth historcial tomes.

The bookshop was established in 1991 and occupies a large percentage of the old Alnwick railway station. There are 7 rooms full of books to browse and a computer to use if you're searching for a particular book. However, I'd say the pleasure of this shop is just browsing. You'll find books in here you haven't seen for years!

There's also 'honesty box' coffee & biscuits and the old waiting room is now a very cosy reading room where you're free to relax with your newest finds.

The central room's bookcases are linked by a model railway which constantly chugs its way around the room. There's also a mural painted by Peter Dodd which features many famous writers from across the ages.

There's always helpful staff on hand if you need pointing in the right direction and the prices of the books are really good (usually we buy 3 or 4 books for the same price as one brand new one). You can even take in your cast offs and trade them for new/old books!

So, next time you're in Alnwick and the heavens open, don't despair. Just head down to the old station and start reading!

“Best Used Bookshop in England”
Reviewed 5 September 2007

Well, I haven't been to every used book shop in England, but Barter has to be the best. Large, well planned and easy to navigate. You can use their computer to see if they have a particular book and where it's located, or you can just spend endless hours browsing the stacks. If you love books, this is heaven!!
