“Could have been just two”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 May 2014

Well this was not cheap, booked in for two days as had to attend a special even with my wife in Bamburgh. We were on the top floor, when we complained that we had to carry heavy luggage up the three flights of stairs we were told Oh no, we always offer to do that. On asking another family who had also lot of luggage if they were offered help, there response was, no they watched us struggle. Top room means you will bang your head, and the bed was probably the smallest double ever seen, or so it seemed. One day no hot water in the morning, I guess you can have those kind of problems. The staff apart from the guy who seemed to be in charge of the restaurant, who was helpful and saved the day, the rest grumpy and it seemed that we were a nuisance and intrusion to there day! Decor very pleasing, but whole hotel seemed a bit tired. We did complain about some of the bad things, and they deducted a hefty piece of our bill, hence the three Starr instead of two. I guess there is not great competition in Bamburgh, as the hotel was very full, maybe that is why there is not the need to really try in terms of service. I did think the staff seemed to be somewhat overworked, perhaps that or training was the problem.

Room Tip: Don't go to the top

My wife, our West Highland Terrier Ruby and I stayed at The Victoria for a 4 night break in May to celebrate my wife's birthday. It's a lovely old hotel in a great location and is very dog friendly, which is the reason we chose to stay there.
Overall, our stay was very pleasant, but there were a few issues, which detract from the overall experience and unfortunately let the hotel down a little. We were not asked if we had enjoyed our stay on checking out, so that is the reason why we are leaving our comments here.
We were booked into room 5 which is a twin bedded room and has views of The Castle which although small and tired, it was comfortable and clean.
The first night we noticed that the toilet was leaking and that there were lights off in the bathroom, which we reported the following morning. The toilet was fixed while we were out for the day, but it took another report to reception and another day before the lights got fixed.
The staff seemed to gather most afternoons during their break, outside our window for a ciggy and we didn't enjoy the smell or the noise from this activity.
The whole place seemed a little "tired" but by doing small things, such as having the carpets cleaned in the public areas like the stairs and corridors, it would give a much better impression. The flags flying out the hotel front were all torn and tatty. Down the side of the hotel weeds were growing well and the planters were full of weeds. It was the same at the rear of the hotel, were there was lovely rattan furniture, which could not be used as they were covered in leaves and other debris. Although these issues may seem minor, it is the attention to detail which is important.
It was not all gloom and doom, far from it. We found the staff very helpful, polite and hard working, although they seemed short staffed at times. We had breakfast each morning and ate in the restaurant on two nights and overall the food was very good.
Would we visit again? of course we would, but come on Managers, pay a little bit more attention to the detail.

Room Tip: Don't park under the trees at the front of the hotel. The birds are very messy. You will have ki...

I chose this hotel having years ago popped in to see if there were any rooms, only to be told no. At the time it was an old style hotel but on our arrival found that it had turned into a sports bar and hotel which in our opinion hadn't improved it. Going into the room I saw evidence of forced entry next to the lock where it had previously been broken into. The room, a superior one was quite large but tired. The shower head was black with mould which I cleaned off myself otherwise my wife would have freaked. The back of the door had two screws left in where a coat hook had previously been. The bottom of the shower screen was also mouldy, not an attractive sight. The first mornings breakfast I asked for the kipper, only to be told they had run out, along with the salmon. We had arrived for breakfast forty five minutes before it closed. The service was very slow. The next morning again, service was slow and having been delivered a pot of tea without milk am still awaiting the milk! I appreciate that they seemed to be short staffed but constantly hearing the bang of plates being dumped on the tables was hardly professional. The full breakfast when it appeared was poor, the black pudding being dry. We paid £135 per night for this room but it wasn't value for money. The only thing that saved it was the location in bamburgh and the beautiful Northumberland coast
K!

Room Tip: Sorry, cant give you one

I had my first experience of staying in Bamburgh with my girlfriend a few weeks ago, which was a bit of a one off as we both live quite locally. We had decided to drive to Seahouses with an overnight bag and walked along the beach to Bamburgh, with the hope of finding somewhere to stay. As we had heard The Victoria showed live football, we had planned to walk along the beach and get to Bamburgh in time to watch the Newcastle game kicking off at 3pm. Although it was the bank holiday weekend, we didn't phone ahead. We came off the beach at around 2ish and made our way up to The Victoria. When we went into the bar we were pretty disappointed to find the match wasn't on. However, we were able to get a room for the night, so thought we would make the most of it and had a great afternoon sitting out the front of the hotel having a few drinks and even nipped to the pub next door which has an amazing beer garden!! The staff behind the bar and on reception were great, even offered to book us a taxi the following morning to pick up our car. We didnt eat in the restaurant, we opted for fish and chips in the bar which were just as good, if not better than our favourite fish and chip shop in Alnwick. All in all a really good random night away, only negative was the football not on but certainly did not spoil our night away as the toon won!! We will certainly be back, thanks again!

Beautiful old stone building in the shadow of Bamburgh castle just round the corner from the Grace Darling Museum. Adjacent is an amazing butchers shop and some wonderful tea rooms. There is a lovely walk down to the beach which is one of the best I gave seen anywhere ....particularly for fabulous sunsets! It was a wonderful surprise to find the room was housing a modern bathroom, comfy bed with plenty of room to watch TV, make a cuppa and relax in an a chair.

The restaurant was serving food of great quality and served professionally and the waiters were able to answer all questions about the menu...also told us how to save money on our wine bill. The breakfast was served in a room with a glass ceiling ...there was so much food on offer for breakfast and so much choice we could never have eaten everything ...so good for people with big appetites! That said there were healthy choices too!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a modernised bathroom.

This is a lovely hotel let down only by its plumbing at busy times. Well in my experience so this may not be typical.
See past that and you get lovely attentive staff, good food, comfy rooms and a cracking location.
It is an old building so don't expect too many mod cons - there's is no lift etc but it has character and charm and the friendliness of the staff really helps make the stay very enjoyable.
Give it a try!
