“Pleasant surprise”
Reviewed 6 February 2014

Stopped here on a drive from York to Edinburgh for something to eat. The food is wholesome and hearty with a strong focus on local providers. We had bangers and mash and fish and chips. Service was pleasant and prompt.

It's well used by truckers but don't let that put you off - they know where to get got food at a competitive price.

“Cracking Christmas Meal”
Reviewed 2 January 2014

I wasnt so sure about the ambience of this modern motel as a place to eat but was really pleasantly surprised. Well priced Christmas dinner with all the trimmings which went well beyond my expectations. Apparently their breakfasts are really good too.

“Not as good as it used to be”
Reviewed 30 December 2013

When I first encountered the cafe at Purdy Lodge it was a gem with cheap, tasty food in a handy location on the trip from the East Midlands to Scotland.

It has now, however become really expensive and is now on par price-wise with the big chain services. We stopped there today for a coffee and to use the toilets. The ladies were disgusting; there was a blocked loo, another with no paper and all the sinks were blocked. After that I decided not to buy anything from the cafe and instead got a coffee from the fuel station which was a bargain! I think we'll now find somewhere else to break the journey.

Thank you for your review. I am sorry that you consider the prices to be too high and I can only apologise for the toilets being dirty. I hope that you decide to give us another chance in the future.

“Something of a gem on the A1”
Reviewed 26 November 2013

Also look for/known as Adderstone Services - Multiple offering, amongst which 24hrs Cafe, Grill Restaurant, Fuel Station/Shop and of course The Lodge itself (which we did not experience on this trip).
2 people - 3 visits (2 for breakfast in the Cafe and the other, to the Grill, for evening meal) during week or so spent in the area - early in month - Also used Fuel St./Shop.

Café - modern fittings, clean and tidy - Good own blend coffee - 1st visit enjoyed breakfast bap/coffee offer - 2nd time it was a full breakfast and likewise really enjoyed.
Staff, in the main, were friendly and chatty (some) if pushed.

Grill - modern room with good standard of fittings, attractive colourful pictures and an entertaining light ornament - Varied menu - Good value pricing - This extended to the wines
as well (a fair number available by the glass [with choice of size]) which were very good pro rata glass to bottle.
Received a friendly welcome from a young lady, seeming to be multi tasking (admirably) between lodge reception, bar and restaurant, who attentively looked after us thru' out the meal. Items particularly enjoyed here were an absolutely beautiful courgette soup of the day and a good steak sandwich with fat chips.

One last staff mention for the very friendly and helpful young guy at the Fuel St./Shop.

Really pleased we tried here the first day in the area. - Recommended.
