My family of 5 stayed at this site 21-25 Jul 14. This was the second time we had stayed at a Haven. Originally, we were hesitant because caravan holidays weren't something we were into, but after a really positive experience at the Filey site we thought we'd give it another go. We went for the Prestige standard as they are generally set further apart and it offers a little more privacy and car parking is adjacent to the caravan. So, we decided to give it another go, but this time at Berwick.
Check in was really easy and parking wasn't an issue. We arrived a little early but the reception staff we're helpful and allowed us to check in earlier than the stated 1400 for Prestige.
The caravan was situated in a good position. Far enough away not to be disturbed by any noise but close enough for us to walk to all the activities. We could also park right outside the caravan which was great for unpacking.
Upon initial arrival it was apparent the place had been cleaned, but not really to a good standard. The litter bin had been emptied but there was still litter around the bin!? There was something indescribable in the kitchen sink plug (like melted cheese); the oven still had crumbs in it and there were long black hairs here and there. The floor had been swept/ hoovered (although badly done), but the cleaner hadn't swept behind the door and there was a layer of dust and hair. A shame really, because the rest of the caravan was ok. I raised this issue immediately with the reception staff and they offered to send a cleaning team out. Unfortunately, the damage was done! ;After a long drive we just wanted to get settled in, plus we had a toddler napping so didn't want him disturbed. Just wanting to get on with the holiday we just cleaned it ourselves. We were only there for 4 nights so making a big song and dance would have just wasted more time, although it did stall things a bit and could make me reconsider using Haven.
After this initial hurdle we ended up having a really nice time. The kids enjoyed the swimming pool which had a small slide they could go on. For the age of kids we had (7,5 and 2) it was ideal. The changing rooms could have benefitted from a couple more family size changing rooms (there was only one that was big enough for us all to fit in together, andwhich had a baby changing table in it) but this was minor and we worked round it. Also, we were given coloured wrist bands for in case it got busy, but we had all the time we needed.
Entertainment wise there is plenty for the kids to do. There is an indoor and outdoor pool, play area, organised events and a good beach. The way we went down (adjacent to Alnwick Close) was a bit steep and not easy with pushchairs, but this didn't affect us too much. There are some fantastic rock pools to explore, especially just after the tide has gone out.
The evening entertainment was very worthwhile and gave me and the Mrs a chance to have a drink whilst the kids were mesmerised with the shows. Yes the shows were a bit 'cheesey', but the kids loved it! The entertainments staff were really good, and very helpful. This is probably the main benefit Haven has over other caravan sites (although I haven't stayed at any other sites!)
There are also some great places to visit off site, such as Bamburgh Castle and Holy Isle (Lindisfarne). They are only 20 mins down the road.
All in all we had a great bit of family time. I'm not yet decided if I would stay at this particular site again, but depending how the complaints dept deal with my cleanliness issue I might go back to Haven; but I would probably choose one of their bigger sites.
