“Cosy base in the heart of historic Berwick”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 April 2011

We loved the Hideaway Hostel. I'd describe it as more of a budget b&b than a hostel. It's better than B&B because you can cook and save on eating out. It's an eccentric warren of a place and we never really worked out how big it was or the layout. Someone else described it as being full of owner's clutter. I wouldn't. It's furnished for guests like a home with books and films and all the kitchen equipment and crockery you could want. We had the use of a cosy shared lounge with wood burning fire. The breakfast is all you can eat and , though not 'full English' we were offered boiled egg and porridge. All with good quality local bread.

Joan was away when we visited but John was great, lending us an OS map for a walk.

We were three families travelling together with young children (age between 2 to 9) which we advised them off at the time of booking some two months previous. What they didn't tell us when we booked were the number of spiral staircases between all our rooms both inside and out and no common rooms for us all to get together in. The owners clutter also filled all the rooms we were staying in to the point that we had no wardrobe space or drawers so we lived out of our suitcases. We were advised when we arrived not to let children touch their things like picture and nik-naks in our rooms!!

Stayed at this hostel during a cycling trip through Northumbeland & The Borders. It has to be one of the the best accommodations I have stayed at, and the level of comfort and attention to detail was second to none. The host could not have been more welcoming. My room was at the top of the building up a set of quaint narrow spiral iron stairs, but once they had been negotiated, I was amazed at the facilities. For cyclists especially, this has to be the place to stay in Berwick, as there is bespoke cycle storage which has even been equipped with racks (although watch the low ceiling). 10/10 - a most enjoyable stay.

This slightly-hidden hostel was one of the most friendly and welcoming hostels at which I've stayed. The owner is incredibly welcoming and the location is off a nice quiet side street but only 5 minutes walk from central Berwick. Having cycled from Newcastle, the comfortable bed I slept in and the wonderful breakfast & porridge I had the following morning were most welcome! This hostel, which is more like a B&B, also has secure bike storage. I will definitely be visiting again!

I was very surprised when shown my cosy shared room at The Hideaway. It was really very quaint and had everything plus other well thought out comforts. My host Joan was very pleasant and obliging. Breakfast was included and while not a cooked breakfast, had good variety. There is NO parking except in the streets nearby but i was told by the police there were very few problems in this town. There is also wifi for 1 pound. I stayed 2 nights and would definately visit here again.

My partner and I travelled a cycle-track loop from Perthshire to Berwick-on-Tweed and back again, via Lindisfarne (Holy Island). In 10 days we stayed in a variety of B&B and Hostel accommodation, all of which was good. It was a great trip for meeting and talking with interesting people, particularly on the "St Cuthberts Way" part of the journey.

The highlight though was our short stay at the 'Hideaway Hostel' in Berwick on Tweed.
The owner/manager, John Morton has developed a distinctive and comfortable environment for his guests. The unique character of the place and its owner was greatly enhanced by John's knowledge of the town's turbulent past. His fluent descriptions of local history were told with great enthusiasm, in a most entertaining and informative way. It was a treat. Thanks John.
