“Off the rails”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 February 2014

There's not much of the castle left now - much of it gave way to the building of Berwick railway station in Victorian times. But it's an important historic site and worth the effort of exploring to find some of the remains behind the station and near the railway viaduct.

“Not much left really”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 August 2013

There isn't much left of Berwick Castle as most of it got obliterated by the railway station. The best way to see the castle remains is to find the small park to the right of the railway station and to walk down towards the river. You can see parts of the curtain wall on the left hand side. On the river path, you pass through the remains of one of the towers. The views of the river and the railway viaduct are superb. Kids love to explore the tower remains and there are also a few benches to sit on.

“Destroyed by the coming of the railway”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 May 2013

Sadly not much left of Berwick castle, a strategic medieval stronghold which passed back and forth between England and Scotland. The coming of the Victorian station has obliterated much of the castle - a few standing pieces of masonary and plaques dedicated to Edward I survive at the top of the hill and some fragments of masonary down at river level - the river walk is picturesque but disappointing for those hoping to see more of the castle.

“Historic Border town”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 May 2013

Heritage, great buildings, barracks, and market days! The history of this town is tumultuous, and it is worthy of a lengthy visit, and a walk around the old town wall.
