Stopped in a dormitory room over the Easter weekend for three nights and had a really positive experience. We would have preferred to be in a family room instead of being split up but that wasnt a big negative.
The hostel is well positioned right on the quayside and provided with a great place to base ourselves whilst investigating Northumberland. We had a terrific time and would have no hesitation in staying again.
Go for the breakfast option all freshly made to order.
The staff are a great and helpful bunch.

Stayed here for one night as a stop over on route 76 cycle ride. The hostel is full of character being a converted granary. YHA have really made a fantastic job of maintaining the character whilst at the same time providing modern comfortable accommodation. As this is on the cycle route there was a proper lockable storage area for bikes which was great. Comfortable area to sit in the reception which was bright open an spacious. Stayed with my partner in large room which had a double bed below a single bunk. Wet room separate toilet. Plenty of storage area with coat hangers. Enough sockets to suit all the electronic gadgets we all carry with us. Used the self catering area for breakfast which is on the top floor. Really well laid out kitchen in little stations a bit like you see on master chef which means you are not tripping over other people all the time. Plenty of kitchen utensils, plates, cups etc nice and clean all the way through to the dinning area.
Shame Berwick it's self is so run down but hostel is a great base to use when exploring the surrounding area or for a nights stay.

Room Tip: Avoid shared dorms where ever possible it worth paying an extra couple of pounds for a room on your...

My son and I were looking for a somewhere to spend a night after a long day travelling and this YHA seemed to tick all the boxes.

We decided to opt for a twin room with en-suite, and were not disappointed, the room was perfectly adequate for the one night and the ensuite was also excellent.

The building is steeped in history and there are placards all around to give you a bit of detail.

There are kitchen facilities available and these were well used on the following morning when I took a wander around, the view from the rear of the building is excellent and provides you with river and the Royal Border railway bridge in your eye line.

A full breakfast (extra charge) was available and was cooked to order.

This was our first stay in a Youth Hostel, I see no reason why it should be the last.

My partner and I stayed for one night in March 2014. We took a private room with en-suite. The room was comfortable, with double bed and single bunk overhead. A small radiator kept it warm. The excellent shower (really a wet room) is separate to the WC and washbasin. After checking-in, access is by electronic key card. The self-catering kitchen on the fifth floor is well equipped and adjacent to a large lounge/TV area. The hostel has a very good coffee shop on the ground floor, which serves basic meals too. Full English breakfast the following morning was cooked to order.

on arrival after a long journey, checked in to a male dorm at 5 in the afternoon. there was a chap paraletic with an empty whisky bottle at the side of his bed. the manager was informed but i was told you take your chance with a dorm. so had to upgrade to a private, not a good start as i was really tired. the hostel itself is clean and the staff friendly. its a pity my visit was spoiled, i think there is an issue here which needs to be addresed.

To stay so cheaply in a historic building with immediate access to the Elizabethan walls of the town and the quayside is wonderful. We stayed in the ensuite family room across the courtyard, and used the kitchen, dining room and television room on the fifth floor of the main building. The kitchen was spotlessly clean - I hope it' would be when the hostel is busier, because it's great to be able to heat up something simple rather than going out. We were there midweek in winter, so the bistro was running as a daytime cafe only, but the menu looked interesting and the cakes and scones were good. YHA members get a discount and free wifi. Our vegetarian breakfast was cooked to order and more than substantial! Staff were helpful.

Room Tip: We were offered a choice of ensuite rooms

On arrival there was some uncertainty as to which room we were staying in, and the young members of staff appeared rather disorganised.
After going to our family room for 2 adults and 2 children we found that it had not been cleaned and the bed linen from the previous guests was still on the floor.
This was addressed immediately but set the tone for the remainder of our stay.
The room was situated across a small courtyard from the main building, and was suitable for disabled people--it was adequate for the one night we were there.
We had breakfast but again there was little or no organisation and what was openly advertised as a "buffet breakfast" simply did not exist. The cooked breakfast, as with everything else here, was adequate
The hostel could be excellent but is let down by its inexperienced staff who had little or no customer care skills.

Hi,

Thanks for your review and sorry you didn't have the best time of it. No excuses for the series of problems. As you can see from previous reviews, we set our stall very high and I'm disappointed we let ourselves down on this occasion.

If you find yourselves coming back this way, please call the hostel in advance, make yourself known to us and I'll make sure we offer you something a little extra as way of apology.
