“Week on the Borders”

When I booked this hotel I looked at previous reviews and was a little wary. Yes the rooms are 'tired' but are not in disrepair. They are still in the 90's. Yes the TV's are all analogue but have digi boxes. So the tv's are not flat screen LCD or LED.
There is free wifi
The setting for the hotel is good. No noise from the nearby A1
The staff are all friendly and the service is good. At breakfast they all knew I liked strong tea and therefore we got an extra teabage without asking
The menu for dinner is limited but varied and all items seem to be based on mashed potato. The menu is not bad value overall. The wine list is a little overpriced but not by much. There are no disabled facilities

Room Tip: We had a corner room with two windows for a good view. The room had two armchairs. This was on 1st f...

We just got back from a 3 day trip to Berwick and apart from a slight hitch with the weather, we had a wonderful time in this hotel. We opted for breakfast and dinner and the food was great. The staff and owners are extremely friendly and attentive and nothing is too much trouble. The hotel is situated just off the A1 and set in wonderful grounds and even has a hidden waterfall. We travelled by train and were a bit worried that we wouldn't be able to get out and about without a car, but there are great walks along the coastal path, both to Scotland and into Berwick, although if we returned we would definitely hire a car. A big thank you to all for a lovely stay.

My husband & I got married in Barbados and had a reception on our return. As people were traveling a great distance, we decided to have a meal as well as an evening do. We chose Marshall Meadows, based mainly on location and the deal on offer, we had never dined or stayed there previously and we were so pleasantly surprised, it was fantastic. David and his brother Robert took over last year and are gradually redecorating & trying to put more life into the place. As such some of the rooms are still a bit dated but they are on the case! The rooms were clean & spacious, and the food was excellent. The guys & girls serving the food and doing the bar were fabulous, they really went out of their way to assist, even at 3am at the residents bar!
Thank you all for a fabulous day. x

Friendly staff who helped out with local info. Our room was spacious and the view was lovely.
The food was really nice too. I agree with some reviews that the decor is a bit dated in places and the dining room carpet could do with replacing but the place has character and we thoroughly enjoyed our two night stay. We would definitely return.

Room Tip: Room 4 was lovely - above front of hotel with side view onto garden. Plenty of space.

I had to stay here for a total of three weeks as I worked on a job in Berwick! The hotel was clean and exquisite in character. The hotel was made to feel like home by the unparalleled attention and care of all the staff including the two owners.

I left feeling that I had family in the north beckoning to revisit and share good meals and interesting conversation.

Thank you my friends, I will be back. Matt

11/4/12

Both my boyfriend and I were very excited to stay in what looked like a rather enchanting and romantic hotel for 2 nights. We booked the best suite which was a fairly substancial amount for the area of Berwick and expected 'the works'. Unfortunately the only thing that was actually worth the £145 a night room was the 4 poster bed....... We wondered if we were meant to take this to recoup our money. There was nothing in this room that set it apart from a £45 a night B & B including the the laminated pieces of paper acting as coasters in the bathroom.

On arrival we were greeted with a reception area that looked like something out of a league of gentlemen. If you dont know this programme it is very dated and quite erie. I have to say that the staff and owners were incredibly friendly. There was also a post operative cat - my boyfriend loved it. I found this inappropriate especially when the cat wandered into the dining room in the evening. The food was ok, but expensive for what it was. We tried to make the most of it by having a drink in the bar. The stock was limited, however, I was very pleased that the owner managed to produce a bottle of prosecco.

All in all we left £500 lighter and rather disappointed with a place that had so much potential. The people that owned it that clearly cared about the place but did not really know how to make the best of it.

N.B We did not remove the bed in the end

On arrival we discovered that our booking had not been forwarded on from company. Not a problem, the staff were great and we had a room sorted instantly. Although hotel and room are a bit dated the hospitality from Robert (owner) and staff more than made up for it, very welcoming and helpful!! Food was excellent and bar very homely and warm with good choice of malts although could do with more variety of other liquer ;). All in all it was excellent and will definately be back. Thanks for a well earned break
