Just returned from our second weekend stay at the Tankerville Arms, Eglingham. George and Mary make one so welcome- suggestions re plans for the day ahead, weather forecast and shopping potential offered where appropriate. Rooms are extremely comfortable and of a good size with bathrobes, luxury toiletries, tea and coffee facilities including water, biscuits and sweets provided. Accommodation is cosy in the winter months and the staff are genuinely friendly and helpful- your quality of stay as a guest is paramount. Re dining there is a choice of good quality courses at competitive prices complimented with a choice of wine or local beers and one has the option of either dining In the restaurant or the bar with the joys of a log burning stove. I would particularly recommend the smoked and poached trout pâté followed by liver and onions served with champ. Breakfast sets one up for the day, a combination of healthy and indulgent - fruit and yoghurt followed by a traditional cooked breakfast or scrambled eggs with smoked salmon. There's a great variety of places to visit close by whether it be castles, beaches, galleries or walking. The area is steeped in history, both Northumbrian coastline and inland and hence even after two visits we feel that we have only scratched the surface of the area. Thank you George & Mary for providing a most welcome haven.

We arrived to lovely warm welcome from George and immediately felt at home. We decided to stay in the suite for two nights which is very large and incorporates a very comfortable bed along with all the creature comforts you could wish for, sky tv, fridge, stereo system, fire place etc. The room and adjoining en suite were both immaculately clean and lots of towels and quality toiletries were provided. We ate in the bar both evenings preferring to interact with the locals and other guests and had a fabulous time. The food is superb value for money and the chips simply to die for! We could thoroughly recommend the steak, fish cakes and steak and Guinness pie. There is also a host of beers to chose from and I totally enjoyed the 'Farne Island' tipple. The breakfast is again superb quality with an extensive menu and that feeling that it has been prepared with care. If anything the suite is directly above the bar and so some noise could filter through into the room but if like us you tend to stay up a little later then it is no issue. We will definitely be returning and will recommend to friends and family - excellent!

Room Tip: all rooms were immaculately presented the suite is that little bit more special we felt

We stayed in the suite which was beautiful with a wonderful, big, very comfortable bed. The quaint layout dictated by the beautiful old building housed a lovely en-suite shower-room with rain shower. Mary has truly thought if everything to ensure a 'home from home' experience with some lovely touches such as chocolates and nibbles to go with the fresh coffee you can make in the room. We enjoyed a lovely dinner and despite the bar being very busy, due to the layout of the restaurant, we were unaware of the nos using the bar area. Staff were very attentive and quality of food was great. Breakfast was one of the best we've had at a hotel and freshly cooked to order.
Wonderful area with lots to do and both George and Mary are very knowledgeable about the local area and keen to ensure you enjoy your stay. We'll definitely be back.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for the suite - it's worth it!

This was a delight from the minute we arrived with a warm welcome from George, the owner, who made sure we were comfortably settled before leaving us to unwind on the first night. The room we had was extremely comfortable and very clean, decorated in a French country style. Although this room had a separate bathroom just across the corridor, this wasn't a problem at all and more than compensated for by the lovely toiletries and bath robes provided. The attention to detail in every way was fantastic and we would recommend this place to anyone looking for comfort, excellent food and superb service. Can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: The French room is at the back and very quiet with no traffic noise

We stayed two nights here, and rank this as probably the best of the many hotels and pubs I have stayed in. We were greeted warmly by the owner George who couldn't have done more to make our stay exceptional. He managed to get the blend of attentiveness and helpfulness without being overly so, just spot on. The other staff were also very friendly and a credit to George and his wife Mary. Our room was spotlessly clean, the attention to detail superb and every fixture, fitting, and accessory of the highest standard. Even the toiletries were top quality. The food was also excellent. Breakfast was of the highest standard (I have been charged £25 each for breakfasts in London hotels that don't come anywhere near this quality) and the restaurant had a good choice of menu and the food just excellent. It was lovely to see the bar being used by the locals too which gave it a good atmosphere. We were given really good information on what to see and do locally and we were even offered maps to help us find out way to a spectacular walk.
This is certainly on my list of places to return to. A real gem!

Room Tip: There is a little road noise as the building is listed so isn't allowed double glazing, so the F...

Very clean, the room was decorated so tastefully and had such wonderful little touches that we had not seen anywhere else..the owner made us feel very welcome and nothing was too much trouble. The food was perfectly cooked and delicious and the young girls behind the bar were bubbly and attentive. It was lovely to see the locals using the bar every night. Such a warm and friendly atmosphere. Highly recommended as a base

My wife and me chose this Inn for a two night stay largely as a result of the excellent reports on this site but we honestly cannot give it the top marks for the following reasons.

Firstly, we don't think the accommodation represents value for money. We booked direct with the owner via email and were offered a DBB rate of £160 per night for the room they call a Suite. It is accessed up a steep flight of stairs and is not a Suite in the true sense but a sizeable bedroom with a sofa and chairs, neither of which are especially comfortable. Yes it had a flat screen TV, ipod docking station and stereo etc but lacked some of the more basic requirements eg. storage space and things like coat hooks on the doors for 'outdoor coats'. It has tea/coffee making facilities and a mini fridge but both were on or near the floor and not at all easy to access.
The en-suite is accessed down three steps and is not especially large. The shower is a walk-in type and was fine but the space / gap between the sink and the shower to access the loo was not over wide and will present a problem for the more rotund guest. Also the en-suite was cold for our first night and when my wife reported this to the landlady the following morning she responded with, "well none of our previous guests have complained"! Frankly, this is not the sort of response one expects and it was said with a 'how dare you complain' tone. The problem was caused by the outside vent cover for the extractor fan which had come off thus allowing cold air to blow in. The landlord replaced it so that for our second night it was warmer and we thanked him for that.

One other issue which is worthy of mention is the noise from traffic and from the bar. Being a very old building there is no double glazing which means that when HGV's pass by the windows rattle. Thankfully, this didn't happen throughout the night just early morning so there's little chance of a sleep in. Also, noise from the bar until about 11pm was very noticeable as the Suite is directly above it.

Turning now to the food. The breakfast on the first morning was fine, save for the sausages which were not particularly nice and overcooked. Freshly squeezed orange juice was a pleasant addition too! Breakfast on second morning [no sausages] was not as good; bacon overcooked but ok other than that.
The evening meals were generally OK and the portion size fine. However, due to the main course choice being limited, I opted on the second night for the same meal as on the previous night, i.e. Beef and Guinness pie. A short time after ordering the landlord came over to us and asked whether I would be interested in changing my order to a sirloin steak as he recommended them. Foolishly, [as it turned out] I accepted his offer. I ordered a medium cooked steak stating that 'pink' is fine but no 'dripping blood' please. What was served was a well done steak and I wished I hadn't changed my mind. The landlord did offer to cook me another steak but that would have meant waiting and my wife's meal would have gone cold, so I respectfully declined. Of course I've been left asking myself what the motivation was for the landlord to get me to change my mind; may be it was the last Beef & Guinness pie and he wanted it for himself or another customer or perhaps he just wanted to offload a steak that was nearing it's 'use by' date?

So in conclusion, our stay at the Tankerville Arms was OK but nothing special and in our view the accommodation is overpriced. Had our rate been say £120 per night rather than £160, then I guess there would have been little to complain about.
