“Warm welcome from Andrew and Janice at the Ship Inn”
Reviewed 15 January 2008

I found my stay at the Ship Inn (during low season when there was little open) very welcoming. I arrived when the bar was closed, but there was a local's birthday party so I was given a piece of cake and a warm welcome before being taken to my wonderful room above the quiet part of the pub. The room had extra heating, a gorgeous four poster bed with white duvet, comfy rocking chair, wardrobe, ensuite with hot showers and a lovely tea/coffee/biscuit/bottled water service. My window looked out onto the quiet Marygate street and breakfast was a choice of full English, kippers or eggs with cereal, juice and tea or coffee. I also had the dinner the night before and lunch.

We have visited Lindisfarne on a number of occasions but not actually stayed on the island. This weekend break enabled us to explore Lindisfarne in every way. We found Holy Island to be the most tranquil, peaceful experience you can ever imagine, with its rugged coastlines and magnificent scenery. Our short stay on the island was filled with stunning sunsets and breath-taking sunrises.

To complement the wonderful castle, the serene chapel and priory and beatiful views overlooking Bamburgh and the Northumbrian coastline, was a superb little gem called 'The Ship Inn'. The warm hospitality of hosts Andrew and Janice and their excellent team of staff, were as welcoming as the log fire they have roaring in the heart of the pub. Accommodation was of a very high standard, spotlessly clean and well equipped with Andrew and Janice on hand to ensure that their guests are well catered for and enjoying their stay. Nothing was too much trouble for them and they were just the perfect hosts, with their staff being equally as friendly.

Food served was of a good standard with a wide range of dishes on the menu and was popular with locals as well as guests, which is always a good sign!

They say Northumbria is 'Britain's best kept secret' and Holy Island is most certainly that! We will return later in the year and recommend 'The Ship Inn' to all our friends and family.

For me, good and welcoming accommodation is the 'icing on the cake' and 'The Ship Inn' was just that!

The Ship Inn is not 5 star luxury - nor does it claim to be - but the room was very clean & comfortable, the staff friendly & the food decent pub restaurant quality. It seemed as if the new owners intend to upgrade & improve further as the new DVD/TV for our room arrived during our weekend stay !

Our experience was that The Ship Inn was an excellent, reasonably priced base from which to spend a couple of days exploring the beautiful island.

We did take a look at the two hotels on the island and our subjective view was that we would rather be staying where we were !

  • Liked — Clean, comfortable & reasonably priced - everything needed for weekend walking on island
  • Disliked — Nothing really - I guess it might be a bit small (just 3 letting rooms) for some people
  • Tips/Secrets — The beaches & cliff top walking is fantastic & even in mid Aug we often walked 20/30 mins w/out seeing anyone else!
