“Fab accommodation”
Reviewed 23 July 2008

We stayed in the larger apartment, which was fabulous - there is a very good kitchenette with microwave, full size fridge, 2 hobs, and all the cutlery and crockery you need. The bathroom was really large - had an over-sized bath as well as a shower. The lounge area was a very comfortable size and the galleried bedroom was an excellent size.

Carol provided a range of cereals, a continental breakfast, juice and some milk and she doesn't skimp on the portions!

The accommodation is on the main road, which can be a little noisy. The road becomes much quieter about 10 pm-ish and then starts to gets noisy again about 6 am-ish. Opposite the accommodation is a lovely park from wehre you can start a pleasant circular stroll around Morpeth.

We usually stay B&B but Morpeth Court has converted us to self catering.

If you're looking for luxury, you'll not find the kind that you may be used to at 5 star chains. However, if you prefer your hotels to be castelated and next to a moat, rather than pre-fab and next to a motorway you should definitely pick this hotel.

The room was small but very well equipped and would really suit people working in the area for a few weeks . Great fresh ground coffee in your kitchen and a selection of DVDs in your living room help you wind up and down at each end of the day. The staff were excellent. I arrived late and the manager had prepared some home-made sausage rolls for me, just in case I hadn't been able to eat on the journey. Nice touch.

Arrived in Morpeth in the pouring rain to find that the hotel was locked up. I called the number on the front door (which says that the telephone would be answered immediately) and left a message. I did this three times over the next hour while getting very wet. After an hour I gave up and wondered round Morpeth and eventually found a B&B. Just after I paid at the B&B, I received a call from the owner's son saying that he was sorry but they had popped out and had just got back. If you are tempted to stay here (particularly if you are a single female), get a mobile number from them and arrange a method for colecting the key if they decide to pop out for the evening! This was a pretty bad experience!

Stayed at Morpeth Court this July (‘06) for the weekend with my other half and would highly recommend it as a base from which to explore Northumberland. The apartments are in a part of a wonderful 19th Century fortified castle tower in Morpeth that used to be the Morpeth Gaol! The apartments themselves are in what I think might have been the jail cells, but don’t let that put you off - they are wonderfully atmospheric, a little bit different and furnished to a very high standard! They are accessed from a tunnel style entrance through large gates, the tunnel running the full length of the building, and because the front gates are locked, this makes the tunnel dark and very atmospheric, lit by old style lamps, as if you are stepping back in time!
We stayed in one of the smaller apartments, there only being 2 of us it was comfortable. There was a ground floor and the bedroom was upstairs on a mezzanine style gallery, from which you could peer over the balcony back down to the person sitting on the sofa below! The roof of the room was barrel vaulted (i.e curved) and this gave a really cosy feel to the room. The walls are 4 foot thick as the small window of the room is set right back in a recess of this depth – I think they certainly wanted to keep the prisoners in! The size of the window (and therefore the limited amount of natural light in room) was perhaps the only drawback, as we were there during a lovely sunny heatwave and really noticed this. But, this is not a criticism as it is part of the experience of staying in an old building such as this. On a positive note due to the nature of the building construction the rooms were wonderfully cool during this heatwave! We also noticed plenty of storage heaters for the winter. The apartments are furnished in a very modern style and are lovely and clean and Carol, the owner has certainly thought of everything you could possibly need for a stay! We were just amazed at the efficient use of space in the Kitchenette in our apartment – you could have most likely prepared a 3 course meal with the equipment crammed in there – and I was very relieved upon returning one night with a bottle of wine to find a corckscrew bottle opener – essential item! The shower room was a bit small but very modern and housed the most amazing power shower – very powerful and lots of hot water! Lost of fluffy towels to wrap up in too.

The apartments are essentially self catering, with the kitchenette for you to prepare your own food should you wish (sink, hob, Microwave, crockery, cutlery, everything really!). Tea and ground coffee (and cafetiere and tea pot!) are provided, and a fresh jug of milk is left in the fridge every day. Carol, the owner and her staff come in and service the apartment when you are out for the day, change the beds, towels etc. (they even do the washing up!) and leave you a prepared cold continental breakfast in the fridge in the evening for the next morning. The breakfasts were very tasty (croissants, melon, cheese and hams, even Gravadlax! Orange Juice etc.) but were a little on the small side for 2 people. However we have hearty breakfasts at home so that’s just my personal opinion. Carol was happy however to cater for whatever breakfast tastes you have if you ask her – we weren’t bothered and were happy with what she provided.
The apartment also had a TV and DVD player (small selection of DVD’s available) and a dining table and very comfy settee. Upstairs in the gallery the queen size bed was very comfortable and firm with lovely bedding. The lighting in the apartment is excellent, very ‘mood lighting’ which is another reason why we weren’t too bothered about the lack of natural light in this instance, the lighting really lit up the barrel roof and as I say, gave it a very cosy and ‘old’ feel.

These apartments are very centrally located in Morpeth, right next to the A1 for getting around the rest of the county, and the wonderful coastline northwards. Morpeth itself is a very pretty market town in the day time, but it can get a bit ‘lively’ on the weekend evenings with the locals out having a good time, hence us retreating to the apartment with bottles of wine since we are quiet souls (which was hardly a chore!). There is a good restaurant near the apartments, and plenty of places round and about within a short driving distance to eat at.

Again I would highly recommend these apartments as something different to a traditional hotel room, I certainly felt more ‘at home’ here than I would have in a hotel, and for around £60 a night per apartment its hardly expensive yet the standards are so high (I think it got 4 stars in the English Tourist Board Self Catering ratings). Go there – you’ll get a warm Northumbrian welcome from the owner Carol, who lives in one of the residential apartments in another part of the tower, so is always on hand!
