Do not stay here - as simple as that. The hotel is shabby with outdated decor. Wifi works infrequently and TV reception is appalling, but worst of all is the lack of cleanliness. Generally the staff were helpful but overworked. Breakfast was good although I had to wait a while as there were no clean dishes and the milk jug was empty.

We booked as this was the cheapest hotel we could find and I have to say this really is value for money. Although it is a little worn out in areas it had a great character. The other half doesn't rate it as much as me - the furniture in our room was odd bits and bobs and there was a store room for dining tables that was unlocked! But it was very big and comfy. Dinner was very good- I would certainly recommend the Oak room resturant. Only downside was the bar area was very basic in the actual hotel- not enough chairs and lacking in atmosphere. The bistro was mosty empty when we there and also seemed a little basic/lacking in atmosphere but this is probably due to lack of general footfall - We found Northumbria in general very quiet. Overall if you want value for money with no major luxury come here.

We ordered a room with a four poster but were given an ordinary bed as there were none available. This building must be very expensive to maintain and there are signs of it getting a little the worse for wear. The bar area is very unwelcoming and was empty most evenings.
However we really enjoyed our stay. Plenty of walks nearby.

I took my Spanish girlfriend here on her first visit to the UK. She was speechless when the receptionist opened the door to the Library Suite. If you are looking for the 'castle' experience this room is perfect.

We had dinner and breakfast and both were really good, especially the dinner.

Staff were very friendly and down to earth.

Not sure why people are concerned about the telly.. this isn't a stopover at the airport type hotel.. you should be enjoying the atmosphere and surroundings.

There is a plaque at the entrance suggesting this hotel is recommended by the Johansens guide.
I would rate this hotel as a poor 3 star hotel lacking management and requiring significant investment to bring it up to an acceptable standard. The television is restricted to three channels. The central heating has two options; on with a terrible racket or off and cold. The food was poor.

Room Tip: Try the Otterburn Hall Hotel - we have stayed there previously and had no complaints

Definitely a hotel with character, and yes the decor wasn't perfect - but this is not a modern city centre hotel and not meant to be. A bit more like being a house guest in a baronial hall. We had a great stay (Itison deal), paid upgrade for the Library suite which was well worth it! The food was very good, and staff naturally friendly - felt like they enjoyed their job. Would happily stay there again

Found this great hotel via an Itison deal. It lived up to its name, both looking and feeling like a castle. All staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Room was a decent size and very comfortable. Meals were excellent - and decent portions. On the down side we could only get 3 of the very limited 5 channels that were available. Also I'd expect a hotel of this calibre to have tissues ibm the room. We stayed 3 nights and would happily return for a short break in future.
