“Be Careful of handing over a deposit for your room reservation”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 November 2008

Friends of ours were due to get married on the 5th of December 2008 at The Otterburn Tower. Unfortunately they had to cancel their wedding due to unforeseen circumstances. The Otterburn Tower were made aware of this over 3 months ago.

Despite this, guests who had made a room reservation at the venue are being refused their requests to get their £50 deposits refunded. I feel this is grossly unfair given the amount of notice the hotel was given about the cancellation. I have spoken in length to both the owner (who despite repeated messages did not return my calls) and the wedding co-ordinator both of which showed no sympathy to our predicament and were happy to "pocket" everybody’s £50 deposits.

My advice to other tripadvisor users is to be very careful about handing over your credit card details and paying £50 in advance for a room that due to unforeseen circumstances you may never get to use. Nearly every other hotel that I have ever stayed at will allow you cancel up to 24 hours in advance without any financial penalty. The only exception to this being if you book a room for a discounted rate over the internet and have to make full payment in advance. This was not the case at the Otterburn as the booking was made over the phone for their normal "rack rate".

In summary I would advise people to stay in a different hotel if visiting this part of the UK.

we have just had a 2 night stay at Otterburn Tower Hotel and have to say its one of the friendliest hotels we have ever stayed in.

Yes we agree that it could do with a bit of decorating here and there, but the staff more than make up for "the sparse decor" as stated in one review! they could not have helped more or gone out of their way to make sure we had everything that we asked for.

we had one meal in the restuarant (yes complete with piped music) it was a quiet atmosphere which made you feel a tad guilty to talk but the food was a credit to the chef. Not too fancy or sparse to make you feel that you have not eaten but enough to appreciated the well cooked and well chosen ingredients.

Breakfast was also very nice with a good selection to choose from.

If you fancy a few days away and are not concerned with staying in boutique hotels then this is a hotel that we can recommend. The staff make it a place to remember.

the good bits - the setting of this hotel is just gorgeous, set among all the rolling dales and hills, and the building is imposing and lovely to look at, with history to boot and there are some nice original features left in the building, like the fireplaces, doors and stairs. The staff were attentive and helpful and it the whole hotel had a lovely relaxed feel.
but
it is not in the best condition either inside or out in the grounds, very bare and cold in our room with no heating, when we asked for a blanket the owner brought us a lovely curtain! nice but not really acceptable. the public areas are very sparsely decorated and feel uncomfortable, there is a small selection of books in one corner of the drawing room but mostly old toys in a heap and a few uncomfortable chairs, again this is not a cheep Travelodge
this hotel prides itself in their food, and it is local ( you can see the veg in the garden) but they are clearly in a rut as the menu is the same every day, no specials, and has a very samey feel, so if you are there for a few days don't take the bed, breakfast and dinner rate, the staff were asked a couple of questions by dinners on both our evening and didn't have a clue. we had a cream tea one afternoon and were served whipped cream from a can - not the food to pride yourself on.
worst of all is the hideous piped music that is on constantly in the hotel, like being on hold to BT ! drove us mad.
all in all, a nice place, lovely owner but very tatty and not up to country house hotel standard.

We recently chose the Otterburn Tower Hotel as the venue for our august wedding and were not disappointed.

The staff there will bend over backwards to make sure your stay is nothing but perfect, the building and surroundings are simply stunning. We saw a number of the rooms and have to say they are all fantastic and so spacious. We would highly reccommend the library room and the 4 poster rooms. The umfraville suite is gorgeous and provided ample space for the bride, 2 bridesmaids, 3 mothers and a sister in law to be made up for the big day by a make up artist and 2 hairdressers!!!! The wardrobe in the suite has an amazing open up mirror which was perfect for the bridal preparations.

The food during the wedding meal, evening reception and breakfast was amazing, best breakfast we have ever had! the hotel had no problem accommoddating our requests and standards throughout our stay were out of this world! I would not only recommend this as a fantastic wedding venue but as a hotel, we are already looking forward to our next excuse to stay at the hotel!

This Hotel is amazing. I can't believe that such a beautiful hotel is here and I didn't know. The bedroom was fantastic with a seperate sitting room- and this is a standard room!. The food in the restaurant is amazing and the portions are huge. The gardens are gorgeous and the hotel just oozes character. I can't wait to come back.

This is a very nice hotel but could be so much better…………

The grounds and outside of the hotel are beautiful, set perfectly in a very dramatic backdrop of scenery and close to some of the major tourist sites of the area.

The food in the restaurant was very nice indeed, with good service.

Our room (room 8) was a good size, but there were a few things that weren’t quite so good. There was damp on the ceiling from an old water leak, causing a sag in the plaster that looked like it could fall down any moment. There was mildew in the bathroom next to the bath. All this could be fixed with a couple of ours work……..

The reception on the tv was also very poor. I did notice there was a n internal aerial network so could the hotel not stump up the cash for sky tv if the local signal is so poor? It is after all £170 per night for dinner bed and breakfast!

Hotel management – you have potentially one of the best hotels in the area, please please spend some money making this lovely old building all that it can be!

Also, remove the tacky , horrible large signs from the entrance – they are not in keeping with your hotel or the area!

WE stayed for 1 night in this friendly hotel. We had an upgrade to a huge four poster bedroom that seeped history--sloping floor, enormous fireplace, quirky windows. No problems bringing the dog and plenty of space to exercise her. Good food --lack of nibbles with the pre dinner drinks would have added a nice touch. However the food at dinner and breakfast was tasty and plentiful.
