“Fantastic stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 September 2013

Northumberland is a beautiful place, Elishaw Farm compliments this. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel like it was our home. Tina had left us a lovely baked cake. There were eggs from the free roaming hens and milk in the fridge along with hot drink condiments. Alan introduced himself and we were made to feel extremely welcome all week with and were presented with a bowl of plums one morning. We couldn't recommend a stay here enough and you can do as much or little as you wish. Thankyou Alan & Tina x.

I booked a week at Elishaw (in Famhouse Cottage) to take my two boys (11 & 13) away for a week this summer.

The cottage was wonderful, comfortably accommodating the three of us. So much as was already provided - towels, bed linen, tea, coffee, milk, DVDs, CDs etc. - that it felt like home straight away. No mad dash to the shops for essentials that you assume will be provided and aren't by other self-catering establishments. On top of all that a lovely sponge cake waiting for us too which didn't last very long in the hands of my boys.

The cottage is very well located. The orchard, field and river provide plenty for the kids to do whilst the private garden provide a haven of peace to unwind and relax. Day trips are easy with a max 45min drive enabling access to Hadrian's Wall, Scottish Borders, Alnwick, Kielder Forest and Water.

A local shop is just a five minute drive away with bigger supermarkets 30-45 mins drive in any direction. Petrol isn't cheap nor are petrol stations located on every corner but wise planning of excursions takes you past enough filling stations that it shouldn't be a problem.

I wouldn't hesitate to go back to Elishaw, either for a family break or a long 'getaway' weekend with my other half.

Elishaw Farm really is a perfect base for a Northumberland Holiday.
We stayed at Elishaw Farm for six nights in the middle of June. We received a warm welcome from Tina, a really lovely lady, who'd baked us a wonderful Victoria Sponge which we found in our cottage when we arrived; this was her own special way of welcoming us to Elishaw!
The cottage was perfect for our needs; clean, spacious and pleasant, with all the facilities we needed for a comfortable self-catering stay - a well equipped kitchen, nice lounge area and dining facility, a bath with lashings of hot water, a comfortable bed, a wood burning stove (weather too warm to be needed) plus a garden to relax in and enjoy for breakfasts, lunches and evening meals. All in all, lovely accommodation without any disturbance from anyone. We only really picked up on the sound of the resident chucks (the 'girls'), who laid the most wonderful eggs we've seen/eaten, the ponies, who will eat anything 'allowed' on offer and the flock of sheep in a nearby field on the farm. In addition to this, Elishaw has fishing rights on about 500m of the river Rede. Although the Rede is a notable salmon/sea trout river, there is also an abundance of wild brown trout which gave me so much fun every evening, even though the water Ievel was low, so I can only imagine how good it must be when water levels are 'normal'. I returned all the small trout caught, but harvested one (at about half a pound) for the pot, which was absolutely delicious. Anyone thinking of fly fishing here should seriously consider barbless hooks, as it would be a shame to over-traumatise the little fellows likely to come up for your (dry) fly!
Elishaw itself is perfectly located for visiting many fantastic places in Northumberland. We went to the Farne Islands on one day (book with Billy Shiels) and Lindisfarne on another day (check safe crossing times first) - both not much more than an hour away on the most scenic of journeys. There is also terrific hiking on Otterburn Ranges close by. As National Trust members, we were also able to enjoy visiting Cragside and Wallington, both interesting stately homes with magnificent gardens. Elishaw is also within easy striking distance of Hadrians. Wall and all of the interesting forts etc along this route. We didn't have time to see everything as there's really no end of lovely places to visit in this area but good reason for a return trip! We've posted some pictures of some lovely places we visited.
On the practical side, a little advice:
1/ Make sure you have plenty of 'deet' if you come in the midge season. As in Scotland, these little blighters really know how to bite.
2/ Get the bulk of your shopping in a town supermarket on your way to Elishaw (e.g. Hexham). Although there is a village store in 0tterburn, which has more or less everything, it's quite expensive (especially for wine and beer).
3/ Get hold of as much local information as you can before you arrive. There's a lot of things going on, which you may love to see/do and it's much better you book/plan for this before you arrive.
Enjoy Elishaw Farm and enjoy Northumberland!

Just came home from a great week staying at this lovely cosy cottage, well equipped everything you need in the kitchen, extra bonus was tea milk coffee and sugar all ready in for you and a lovle y homemade cake! comfy beds. Lovely garden for sitting outside in the sun, and stroking the two mini shetland ponies,Great Walled orchard and lovely big area of land with the river for walking the dogs and fishing and campfires until 11 at night cooking marshmallows and hotdogs! Tina and Alan are a lovely couple and very helpful , checking out an evening at kielder observatory when we couldn't access the Internet. I was there with my husband two 15 year olds and two dogs and none of us wanted to come home! It's within easy reach of kielder , otterburn , Bellingham great for shopping and a walk to the waterfall and lots of other lovely places a visit to kielder observatory is a must!

Our second and eagerly anticipated visit to the cottage. Spotless and cosy as before with a warm welcome from Tina and lots of treats; eggs, milk, homemade delicious sponge cake and woodburner ready for lighting. Central for varied activities; watching trailhounds, amazing views from Carter Bar; Hawick, Kelso and Jedburgh (for tasty Scotch pies and venison burgers). On cold wet days Barter Books at Alnwick has roaring fires, coffee, food and a welcome for dogs. Beach walk from Bamburgh to Seahouses for fab fish and chips. Pennine Way walks, beautiful Coqued Valley, Kielder Water walks and ferry - amazing dark skies with shooting stars - our wish was that we would come back soon to do all the things still on our list. Many thanks - unreservedly recommended.

Superb mini break at elishaw farm cottage which is simply lovely, well equipped and deceptively spacious, the garden at the rear is lovely its safe and secure and faces a field with Shetland ponies, whom my son and bulldog fell in love with. My son also enjoyed seeing the chickens and collecting the eggs on a morning . The river literally a short walk from the farmhouse - it's perfect for a scenic walk with a dog and young children - making our stay a delight. Thanks Tina and Alan the homemade cake on arrival was also much appreciated. Our stay was perfect

We stayed here with family and can say that both cottages provide brilliant accommodation. However what really makes this place special and well worth a visit is all the outside space that come with the cottages and its spectacular location.

The cottages have a sunny courtyard and private outside spaces together with lovely orchard and farm buildings with swings and hammocks and space to store bicycles, not forgetting the large field which leads down to the beautiful river bank. Perfect for camp fires and relaxing!

The location has easy access and is within easy reach of all the great places Northumbria has to offer. We visited Keilder Water and Cragside. But with its ideal setting you wouldn’t really need to go far or indeed away from the cottages to have a great “get away from it all” holiday.
The National Park and Otterburn ranges provide spectacular scenery to cycle away from busy traffic and are literally on the doorstep.

We can’t wait to come back!
