Wooler is a good base for exploring Northumberland. We stayed for two nights, and visited Alnwick Castle, Lindisfarne and Cragside. The hotel claims that Virginia Woolf stayed there, but one hopes that the decor and food were slightly more refined back then. The staff are friendly enough, but I did not feel they would go the extra mile to make a guest feel welcome. Our bedroom and bathroom were huge, and quite comfortable, but everything looked a bit faded. One of our travelling companions had some difficulty changing his room when he discovered how small his bathroom was. There is a nice garden round the back, where a carefully deployed hedge hides the car park behind. The greatest disappointment was the food, our evening meal was not much better than you would have found in a pub in the 1980s.
