“Dated decor, erratic service but good location”
Reviewed 9 August 2013

Wooler is a good base for exploring Northumberland. We stayed for two nights, and visited Alnwick Castle, Lindisfarne and Cragside. The hotel claims that Virginia Woolf stayed there, but one hopes that the decor and food were slightly more refined back then. The staff are friendly enough, but I did not feel they would go the extra mile to make a guest feel welcome. Our bedroom and bathroom were huge, and quite comfortable, but everything looked a bit faded. One of our travelling companions had some difficulty changing his room when he discovered how small his bathroom was. There is a nice garden round the back, where a carefully deployed hedge hides the car park behind. The greatest disappointment was the food, our evening meal was not much better than you would have found in a pub in the 1980s.

Having just returned from yet another enjoyable break in Northumberland, using the Tankerville Arms as our base, my partner and I have been consistently delighted with the whole package this lovely family run hotel provides. The accomodation is both clean and extremely comfortable with Ann and team providing a truly warm 'Northumberland Welcome'. The quality of service and courteousness from staff is to be commended. The menu offers a range of courses with locally sourced produce, expertly cooked and presented - a treat at the end of an exhausting day of sightseeing! We love it and will certainly be returning for, hopefully, many more delightful breaks in this gem of a hotel.

Room Tip: Garden facing rooms are probably somewhat quieter than those at the front of the hotel

The hotel may be dated and in need of a bit of a face lift but the location is so peaceful and quiet. It was wonderful weather and the birds were singing, staff were wonderful and friendly and so helpful, very, very relaxing. We would definitely recommend this hotel if you want to relax and enjoy the company of your partner. Breakfast was very tasty although I would of liked croissants but I'm just being a bit picky now.

A last minute hideaway break. Good location. Very nice food, but, most of all, excellent staff.

Absolutely no problem in taking canine friends. Staff dealt with a flash flood (due to heavy rain after a long very hot spell) without fuss or panic or disruption to guests.

Nice atmosphere. Would definitely go back. Staff Ab Fab! Thank you!

Room Tip: Although my room was situated at rear of hotel with no view to speak of, the only noise was that of...

The reviews of the Tankerville Arms seem varied with some good experiences and some less good. We'd been there in June 2012 and had a very good dining experience with good food and service and were looking forward to going back again.

However, our visit in May 2013th was a disappointment. The menu was mostly the same but the dishes were different and not always what we expected. The portions were on the small side too for the price charged. There were other things that put us off too, but as it was a couple of months ago we visited the details have faded. Still the experience was disappointing enough for me to write a review after receiving a prompt from Trip Advisor

We visited the Tankerville Arms for a two day break this July and really enjoyed our stay. We were a little worried at first as they did not seem to have any record of us booking, after that I joked with them that we were Mr and Mrs Don't exist they found us a room, which was room no. 6, a large family room. We were there for our anniversary, although we were there on a bed and breakfast basis we booked a table for an evening meal which was exceptional, apparently a new chef had arrived from Alnwick Gardens restaurant and seems to been a great addition to the staff. Breakfast was really good and we feel we must mention Karina who was very helpful and always had a smile on her face, although she seemed to have to cope with an awful lot of tables on her own. A good selection of real ales which of course I had to sample and not over priced. The hotel was very clean and pleasant. It is a traditional country pub hotel with a lovely beer garden and a lovely relaxing atmosphere. A very good 3* hotel and would certainly not hesitate to return. A visit to Ford and Etal estates with over 20 attractions including a small gauge railway at Heatherslaw and also a working flour mill, which are both well worth a visit. Lady Waterford Hall at Etal is exceptional, also the Black Bull Inn is the only thatched public house in Northumberland (closed on a Tuesday as we found out)!

The Tankerville Arms is a very traditional former coaching inn although to many eyes it may be described as dated. Well, they would be correct. However that it was is so refreshing and a wonderful change from the boring chains which all look the same. Lots of parking and easy to find.
THE ROOM we had was a twin and a good size. The bathroom was almost as big as the room, it was huge. Everything was immaculately clean and decorated. One of the best things - which is not always possible in many purpose build hotels - is that plug sockets were situated in the right place to be able to sit at the dressing table to do my hair. Even better is the fluorescent light above the mirror and a stand alone mirror with a normal & magnified side which is great to see to put make up on when I need glasses for close to work. Comfy bed, 2 pillows and wonder of wonders staff who know not to tuck the sheet under the duvet under the mattress so there was no need to unmake a bed before getting into it.
STAFF were all welcoming, friendly (well, being a native of tyneside I would have expected little else) and happy to engage in a bit of conversation. Rang the bell at check in and someone was with us in 30 seconds whilst at check out someone was already at the desk and enquired after the reason for our visit and what we had done then asked if everything had been ok with our stay. Both check in and out were done efficiently and quickly and we were asked if we wanted our bags taken upstairs.
THE FOOD in the evening was outstanding, long time since I have had such a good meal. Wild garlic mushrooms which included a good variety and in a lovely garlic sauce on bruschetta. Saddle of lamb was perfectly pink and tender served with the best fondant in an age with pureed carrot that actually tasted of carrot. Roast pepper and tomato soup the following evening was gorgeous then tender and tasty beef with perfectly smooth and buttery mash and a medley of veg including fresh green beans, mini corn and chanternay carrots. The food was excellent value with two of us eating 2 courses the first night and one of us having 3, the other 2 plus coffee (double espresso was perfect) the next night the total cost was about £63. Waitresses and waiter were spot on with service.
COOKED BREAKFAST was ordered rather than a buffet with cereals, yoghurt, jams etc set out to select from. For me the breakfast was not as good as I have had elsewhere - if you do not like sausages very very well done you need to tell the waitress! Toast was burnt the first morning but perfect the following day. Tea was served in a tea pot and was nice and strong.
BAR service was great as were the prices since it is a pub not just a hotel. Barman was efficient, friendly and happy to engage in a bit of conversation which I must say is not always the case in similar country establishments where they can often be a bit distant with non locals.
THE GARDEN is lovely and quiet and in the gorgeous weather we had could not have been better. There is a little play area which is ideal if you have young children with you.
I would most certainly stay here again if I was in the area and I have told my friends and family still in and around Tyneside and Northumberland to look in on this place if they are in the Wooler area.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the garden are quieter than those at the front but to be honest there is very litt...
