“Wonderful, peaceful retreat”

Idyllic, peaceful location, with freedom to wander over the owners fields. Woods, river, lake - even a local otter. Cottage is clean and comfortable with plenty of space, and a real log fire for the chillier evenings. Huge lawn outside for children to safely play. Great base for visiting the National Park and coast, although if you just want walks you don't need to travel far.

Owner lives in adjacent farmhouse and is very helpful. Cost is very reasonable (and wasn't even asked for up front which makes a nice change).

If you want noise and activities this is not the place for you, but if all you want to wake to is the sound of the chickens strolling across the lawn outside it is to be recommended. We would definitely consider returning.

Be aware that Croft cottage is adjoined to a smaller cottage which at the time of visiting was let out long term to another couple who share the outside space. Also, that there is no Wi-Fi and you need to go outside to get any sort of mobile phone signal (which is also a bonus!).

“quiet family retreat in lovely setting”

The owner was friendly and helpful, though widely different prices on different sites were confusing.
Liked best:
The property was attractive, clean and comfortable, easy to access, had storage for bikes - very useful to us - and in a lovely landscape. Very peaceful. Loved the dark skies and slept very well. It had a loungy sofa and some more upright chairs so everyone was comfortable.
The living room was comfy and a nice log fire.
Nice dining room too, bedrooms pretty and not too chintzy
Nicely furnished overall though kitchen a bit dated.

Liked least:
Carpet in the bathroom instead of lino. No.
The bathroom extractor fan goes on forever and we couldn't find a switch to turn it off at night, so take either a torch for midnight visits or earplugs for the people in the double bedroom.
One of the single beds set off my asthma - it had a strange odour - feather pillows possibly? Didn't happen when I changed beds.
Kitchen could do with a few more implements as we like cooking but if you eat out that's not a problem.

“Lovely cottage in a great location”

Croft Cottage is clean, warm and has everything you need for a comfortable stay. The open fire with an unlimited supply of wood was great on chilly spring nights.
The lack of WiFi/3G/4G was refreshing and made for a real break.
The location is fabulous with some great walking right on the doorstep with Wooler less than 5 miles away for grocery shopping.
Fresh farm eggs made some of the tastiest scrambled eggs ever.

“Great for activities or inactivity”

We found Croft Cottage on line and booked it. It was everything that it said it was, well equipped and a comfortable place to stay. What the description did not say however was just how peaceful the place really is. No noise or light pollution. There was the odd glider passing overhead but that was about all. We spotted a red squirrel nearby and some deer on the hill.

The walks in the wild country around the College Valley (two or three miles away) can be as gentle or as challenging as you want. Every summit seems to have an ancient hill fort on it. And the empty local roads must be some of the best road cycling in England.

Half an hour's drive got us to the coast, with Holy Island, an amazing sandy beach at Banburgh, and the wildlife on the Farne Islands.

It is hard to imagine a better combination of accessibility and tranquility. We will certainly go back
