“Consistently Very Good Food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 June 2014

I have eaten here several times over the years when visiting family in the area and the food has always been very good. This last visit was no exception. 6 of us had lunch and everybody enjoyed their meal. The service was, as usual, quick, friendly and efficient and the prices are reasonable.

They accept reservations and it's always a good idea as the restaurant fills up quickly because it is so popular.

Great food, cooked to perfection. Great choice on the menu, friendly staff. One of the best pubs in the area.

If your in the area, take time out to visit this one.

“Rather dissapointed...”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 May 2014

Went with friends on bank holiday Monday.

The restaurant part of the pub looks like it's seen better days with dated tables and chairs and just feels a bit lacking in atmosphere. You have to walk through the pub to get to the restaurant, I'd class it as a locals pub.

The pub is popular for its exotic meat selection and cooking on hot stones at the table.

3 of us went for the hot-rock experience, 2 had springbok and 1 had ostrich.

The meat portions seemed rather small, and came already on the hot-rock with a place either side of the stone for veggies or chips.

When the meat was cooked, we put our food on the side plate that came with the food and the whole meal of chips, meat and fried mushrooms with onions easily fitted on to the side plate with plenty of room to spare.

So, we all left the restaurant hungry because the portions aren't very big, a side plate of food is not a meal, it's a starter.

The ostrich was rather bland, the springbok was ok. But at £18 for a side plate of food, this certainly does not appear to be value for money.

Chips are cheap
Vegetables are cheap
Salad is cheap

If you're gonna be stingy with meat portions (and I can't recall seeing the weight of the meat portion being sold mentioned on the menu, but I'm thinking our steaks were about 150g each, which is pretty small!) then pack a plate with veggies and chips, that way the perception is you're getting a full plate, value for money and won't leave the restaurant hungry!

We were all rather disappointed, small portions of bland food that was over priced and no real atmosphere.

There are other restaurants around Abingdon which offer better value for money, more choice and a much nicer environment.

“Great food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 May 2014

As this was just walking distance from my B&B I ate here on my first night, I would highly recommend this pub but please book a table as I turned up and the place was fall, the staff managed to find me a spot in the bar to eat, my food came quickly and was excellent.
