“Family Lunch and Family Food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 February 2014

After a trip to the Earth Trust we decided to pop into the Plough Inn at Long Wittenham. Though the car park is a tad small for the amount of people that turned up (get there early folks) the garden is huge, so in summertime this place will be full. It had a great outdoors, and with three kids in tow the playground area, swing and big garden was a saving grace for the kids to run and scream whilst not annoying any other clientele. We ordered a Sunday Roast, and they do cater smaller portions for children and also have a gluten free option as well (well done). The food came out very quick, we decided to eat outside as the day was nice and sunny albeit a little chilly. The portions were good already and the cauliflower cheese was delightful, though for me the beef (Aberdeen Angus mind you) was too rare for me - again just personal preference. The service was excellent, ordered with no fuss and the waiter was very friendly and tempted us inside to eat in the warm. The bar is a tad small, however it opens up to a good size restaurant and also had a 'family room'. You could tell this place is popular as the car park soon filled up and a few 'reservation' signs were on tables. Would I come back again, yes I would, staff were very friendly, the food was nice (will need to tell them to burn my food next time) and the garden (with playing area) is ideal.

“Fabulous village pub on the river”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 May 2013

The Plough is in an excellent location, in a charming village and just a few steps down to the river. That has always been one of its pluses. Food, however, was another matter.

Well not anymore! The new owners have completely revamped the menu, focusing on doing a few dishes well, rather than pages of boring, mediocre fare. We visited on a Sunday, and I had locally caught trout that had been brought in the day before. Gorgeous! My husband had a wild mushroom risotto that was divine (though it could have used a tad less olive oil). There wasn't a sandwich menu, but they offered to make us some using the Sunday roast beef.

The beer garden is large and pleasant, and the tables are spaced well apart so you don't feel crowded. There is a swing set and slide for the kids. Sadly (and this is why I didn't rate it as Excellent), they don't have a kids' menu. They made chips for our 6-year-old, but a few simple offerings would have been appreciated.

I think the Plough will continue to improve as the new owners settle in. It's great to have another nice place to eat and drink so close to home.

“Well worth visiting”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 May 2013

Went for a midweek lunch. Beautiful setting, lovely pub with a huge garden leading to the river. Our lunch was delicous and well worth the money. Staff were all friendly and helpful, from a warm welcome to a cheery "goodbye". Will visit again and again.

Micro wave type food and not a very friendly place at all. Each meal although cheap enough was a waste of money. As strangers we were not made to feel welcome at all by the staff.
