“Very pleasant lunch”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 May 2014

The Stocks Bar is part of the Crown and Thistle Hotel situated just off the main town square in Abingdon. The hotel’s an old coaching house with the bar and the hotel restaurant on opposite sites of a central cobbled courtyard.

The hotel completed a major refurbishment last year that included The Stocks Bar that is now a very big improvement on it’s pre-refurbished state, especially as the barn adjoining it has been refurbished and incorporated into the bar to provide much more seating in an interesting “rustic” environment. The Stocks Bar now makes for a very pleasant environment for a drink or snack.

The Barn incorporates a projection-based TV on one wall for viewing sporting events, such as the Formula 1 that was on when we visited, but the layout of the bar is such that it’s almost divided into 4 separate “rooms” so if you’re not interested in the TV then you can escape into one of the other areas to avoid it.

Free WiFi is available (you have to register for it when you first connect but there’s no fee) and it gives a fast and reliable internet connection.

The staff in the bar are friendly and helpful and the service is good.

I didn’t have beer on this visit so I can’t comment on the price but wine tends to be a little expensive compared to other venues in the town. A small glass of one of the cheaper wines on the menu costs £4.10, a large glass of the same wine comes in at £5.35 and a bottle costs a little under £16. A large glass of the white rioja, which tends to be a more pricey wine in any case, will set you back £6.90.

There’s a reasonable enough selection of bar snacks available - we chose one of the burgers and a ciabatta sandwich both of which had good portion sizes and were fresh and tasty. Again, though, at £11.95 for the burger and £8.95 for the sandwich The Stocks isn’t a cheap option for lunch.

Overall, a very nice place to nip in for a drink or to have a bar snack for lunch but the Stocks isn’t the cheapest option in town.
