“Friendly & welcoming for family birthday meal”
Reviewed 19 January 2014 via mobile

We only booked a table the day before arriving for Sunday lunch to celebrate our daughters 24th birthday. The whole restaurant/bar looked very tastefully decorated considering the £1.8m makeover, and as it's our first visit to this restaurant we were impressed. We had already looked over the menus online so had an idea what to expect. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, which was good news as I'd noticed quite a negative review when looking over the finer details. We were shown to our table without any waiting around and coats taken & hung up. Our drinks orders were taken promptly and given a few minutes more to make our dinner choices, then water was offered. A large jug of iced tap water (our choice), was brought along with glasses of ice & lemon too. When our dinners arrived, (2 pork belly, 2 lamb shoulder & a vegetarian butternut squash with lentils), all portions were a good size, and we all tucked in eagerly. All plates were cleared, which gives an idea of what we thought of it all. The red wine that we chose was great too, if a little pricey, (£29 Rioja), although there were some cheaper wines on the list. All in all we were very pleased with the service, food and the whole look of the Crown & Thistle. I would recommend.

Wow- this place looks great after the refurbishment and is a real welcomed addition to Abingdon. We booked The Barn function room for a Christening party and it was beautiful. Exposed brick walls and overhead beams with lovely furniture and draped in fairy lights. It houses a bar as well as loos and was perfect for group of adults and children to eat and play in. The staff were super, helping us blow up balloons in the morning and decorate the place. Not that it needed much decorating as it is so pretty in its own right. We ordered a buffet which was delicious and they had no problem with us bringing our own Christening cake for pudding. Nothing was too much trouble. The bottle of procecco we ordered in advance was waiting for us in an ice bucket on arrival. It was a perfect venue and the staff were a pleasure to deal with. We had a nosy round the rest of the place and it all looks fantastic.

A really great job has been done in the renovations of this establishment and it is an excellent addition to the entertainment facilities in Abingdon.
In addition the staff , particularly the bar staff , always provide an outstanding level of service and this made a major contribution to
the terrific New Years Eve event .

Modern brasserie- open kitchen- attentive service -perfect steak.
Would have enjoyed more selection re sauces as only Bearnaise was on menu.
Croissant bread & butter pudding disappointing .
Over all a cut above the average pub food.

This was the 2nd visit since the refurbishment. The 1st was just after opening and was suffering from teething problems, staff needed more training.
The 2nd visit was much improved and we had a very good evening. The staff seemed more knowledgeable and much more confident. The food was of a good standard and reasonably priced. I would recommend the scotch egg as a starter and belly pork for the main. The muscles were out of stock and was our only disappointment.

The drinks are at the higher end of the price range for Abingdon but we will be going back soon.

I have to say a massive thank you to the entire team for giving us the best New Years celebration bar none. We really felt extremely welcomed. There was a good crowd of nice people .

The hotel rooms are crisp, attention to detail is excellent across the hotel, beds are comfortable, rooms well specced great fixtures and nothing is too much trouble.

Cocktails are as good as anywhere I've been, decor is modern and fresh the food on the restaurant is good the wine reasonably priced a real gem in Abingdon we love it !

I wasn't sure what to expect from the newly made-over Crown and Thistle. In its previous incarnation it was a place to avoid, and, as my first visit was the week before Christmas, I wasn't expecting to be impressed.

However, the makeover has made all the difference.

I found it now to be really classy, but also really welcoming. We had a relaxing drink in the bar and then tried out the restaurant. We couldn't have had better service in either: the staff were friendly, helpful and fun.

The portions were a good size but not overwhelming, and the menu choice was varied, even for vegetarians.

I'm so pleased that this venue has been improved. It's a real asset to the town.
