“WONDERFUL”
Reviewed 22 July 2014

We booked a 2 night break via 'Secret Escapes' so got a very good deal with dinner included one night and a free bottle of wine if eating in restaurant on second night. Check in was effortless, first impression of our room was great, the furniture and fixings are of very high quality and although our room was quite snug the room was perfect for us. The ensuite had a very powerful shower and again decorated very nicely, only one little negative was the shower cubicle size, quite small and would suggest they install some sort of little shelf to house shower gel, shampoo etc. The restaurant was lovely, the staff were very polite, friendly, informative and professional and always seemed pleased to deal with their customers. The food was also of very good quality, my husband was such a fan of the ribeye steak he had it both nights and said they were the best steaks he'd ever had. The breakfasts were great too, with good quality produce. As we visited on the hottest days of the year we welcomed sitting in the courtyard after dinner to enjoy drinks form the bar. We visited Stratford Upon Avon on route to hotel and the next day went to Oxford on the bus which was all very painless and saved the hassle of driving for the day. All in all a great weekend stay, Thank you to everyone at The Crown & Thistle.

Hi Jkjk74,

It’s so lovely to hear that you had a wonderful weekend and thank you so much for taking the time to leave your review! It’s incredibly motivating for the whole team to get such positive feedback and we’ll definitely take your comment about a shower shelf into consideration!

As the rooms are all personalised and different they do vary in size a little, if you’re looking for a more spacious room then we recommend asking for the honeymoon suite next time you book. This has a gorgeous freestanding bath in an open bathroom at one end of the room, as well as a separate shower and bathroom.

We hope to see you again soon,
The Crown and Thistle Team

I cannot praise this hotel enough. Traveling from london to oxford to visit my sister wanted to stay local. Came here after 9 pm thinking we hadn't a hope of a reservation. All very last minute. Place is very quaint lovely quirky rooms double glazing so no noise. Staff were very helpful and friendly a massive thanks to the lady who was on breakfast tremendously kind. Loved the free standing bath. Menus and choice were fab. Was so pleasantly surprised. Hotel is split between 3 buildings reception and rooms and across the mini courtyard the bar and then restaurant. Bed and breakfast for the 2 of us was only 75 pounds breakfast was gorgeous fruit salad yogurts croissants etc then cooked menu. Didn't get to explore abingdon as we left the following morning. No lift but I think there's only 2 floors so wasn't a problem. Do not hesitate to book.

Room Tip: Slept at front of hotel above the road. Double glazing so heard nothing.

We have just spent one night in this hotel It is located right in the centre of Abingdon next to the Market Square and near to the river.

Check in was speedy and very friendly and we were shown to our romm and all details explained.

The room was spacious and tastefully decorated. The bed was comfy and large.
The bathroom was modern and clean with plent of fresh towels and lovely Temple Spa toiletries which my wife loves. There was a light bulb out and the bath had a leak, I should have mentioned it to reception but we were in a rush to get to a party.

We had a drink in the courtyard which was very pleasant.
We didn't have dinner but did have breakfast which was very good indeed.

All staff very pleasant and helpful and overall good value at £ 125.00 for B&B.

Would recommend.

Hi Hershamboy,

Thanks so much for taking the time to leave your review, we’re really pleased that you had a great stay with us! We’re so sorry to hear that your bath had a leak and the light bulb was out, especially as you were in a rush and didn’t have time to mention it to someone so we could fix it! If you come back again we will definitely make sure that this is not the case.

We’re delighted to hear that you had a lovely breakfast the next morning, and would love for you to sample the lunch/dinner menus on your next visit!

Do let us know what you think!

We stayed for 3 nights midweek with our 10 week old son We were all made to feel very welcome and were very impresed with the hotel. The room was beautiful and contemporary. The overall hotel design around the courtyard was an excellent setting for some early evening drinks in the sunshine. We ate in the restaurant and it was excellent - we would have dined there more often but had other plans. The breakfasts were very generous and were coupled with excellent service from the staff. Cannot recommend it enough! Just re-read this review and the number of times I have said 'excellent' says it all!

Room Tip: We stayed in the bridal suite as we thought this would be the biggest room - we needed space for the...

Hotel staff were very friendly, and extremely helpful. Room was very spacious and comfortable. Huge bathroom and air conditioning in the room.
Great selection of ales in the bar and the restaurant had a very reasonably prices menu. Eggs Benedict for breakfast is highly recommended.

It is a bit different spread out over lots of buildings - but all the more fun. every room is different and a bit quirky with striped carpets and dark muted walls. the little touches are what makes it - free water and milk in the room fridge, filter coffee for the morning. Food was fresh - the pulled pork was amazing. the young staff were polite and seemed happy! My sons liked the doc for their phones so they can listen to their music

Room Tip: Ask for room with bath as well as shower. The bedrooms do vary in size a lot so ask for big ones. Th...

We required a venue that could cater for a small wedding reception (up to 60 people) that also has accommodation. We were also looking for a function room with character, as we had a themed wedding reception. The Barn was perfect: wooden floors, exposed brick walls, high ceilings with exposed wooden beams.

We also needed a venue that wouldn't mind email communication as we were in Sydney, so it wasn't really practical to call or visit in person.

Nothing was too much trouble for the events team! Consisted and clear communication via email. We were able to bulk hold rooms for the night of the event to allow our guests to book themselves a room if required. We were even able to negotiate a group rate! Which worked out well as we ended up booking 13 of their available 18 rooms.

Our room (number 6) was simply gorgeous! Definitely the honeymoon suite! I LOVED the higgeldy piggeldy nature of the hotel room layouts, took me a while to get the directions too & from reception correct (I kept opening a broom cupboard enroute from our room to reception!) A note to older travellers, and those with big bags (like us) - there are quite a few stairs to negotiate. But it didn't detract from the stay. Also I initially was concerned when I sat on the bed and it appeared that the mattress was REALLY soft (pet hate) but when I lay down it was fine, the required support was there. The shower was fabulous, the only small criticism I have is that there wasn't much shelf space in the shower to hold shampoos & shower gels. Only for a single soap dish. (I prefer not placing items on the shower floor if I can help it)

The staff were fabulous too! Very friendly and helpful from arrival to departure. The staff who managed the function for us on the night were also terrific. It was no stress to add a last minute meal for a last minute acceptance. They also played along well with our theme (anything from medieval through to Victorian/ steampunk) - we'd named the tables after GoT houses and when they numbered the tables they printed the house names with the crests too! Such an inspired touch!

We'd arranged a buffet dinner for our guests. And instead of the usual having to get up and line up to choose your food, each table received platters of food, so we didn't have to leave the comfort of our seating and it sort of felt like a mediaval banquet as a result. Brilliant.

All in all a very pleasant stay, I can highly recommend them! I believe all our guests had a notable time too :-)
