“Quirky old England stay.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 May 2014

We stayed in the court room and enjoyed a queen size bed each. It is a very large room and would be great for families or a girly sleepover party :-)
We found everything nice and clean in our room and the beds very comfy. The hotel staff were very helpful and looked after us well. We had a large cooked breakfast in the morning that was yummy but didn't eat there for a evening meal.
The town is only small but we found a few lovely places to eat ( the cafe next door is wonderful) there are a few really nice little shops tucked around the town as well. If you like walking there are plenty of places to go not very far away.
For the money we paid I would give 5 stars.

Had 2 evening meals and one breakfast at the Old Crown, really great pub food, would recommend. The room was comfortable, for an old coaching inn, and the staff were most helpful and very welcoming. Faringdon is a good central place to start a Cotswolds visit.

Room Tip: The rooms at the front have a good view of Faringdon market place. The back rooms may be the quietes...

This was our last stop on our round the UK trip, its a wonderful old building full of character and our room did not disappoint, but it went down hill from there.
In our room we discovered a smell of sewer variety, we were told there was a leak out on the street, that's when I started noticing little things in the room, from the bath panel being dislodged, also just enough toilet paper etc but we lived with those problems. We had gone out for a meal and decided after our meal we would have a few drinks in our pub/hotel.
Well there is no point going to bed till midnight on a Saturday night as the very loud karaoke lasts till then and it was below our room. We finally got to sleep after midnight only to be awoken by a road works gang at 2 am to came to fix the water leak which happen s to be right outside our bedroom window, they did not finish till 6am.
I think our biggest let down was the breakfast the following morning. No organization at all. No places were set, no coffee, no cutlery , no cups it was a joke. It could be so much better with better staff.

Stayed 1 night to attend a meeting. Loved the place. Very old, full of character.
Staff & customers were very friendly. Room 2 has a very comfortable bed & nice powerful shower in the en-suite. Good breakfast with as much coffee as you need to wake you up & newspapers to read while waiting for the full english to be served.
Very good value hotel & much better than your uaual cheap chain hotels.

If your wont is Premier Inn or Travelodge then do NOT stay here. If however, you want to stay in an old coaching inn full of character then this is the place for you. A friendly welcome, then shown to our room - which was useful because there are many levels and passages here (from what we saw, wheelchair access could be a problem - perhaps there are other rooms suitable that we didn't notice?). A lovely old stone-flagged bar (which their brochure says can sometimes get raucous), and a good selection of real ales; a great log fire too. We ate there, and I avoided the "shepherd's suet pudding" as I thought it would probably be something served up in a small dish - boy, was I wrong! My partner managed to get thought it and said it was delicious. Breakfast too was very good - best fried bread I have had for ages. The room was a little tired, but all in all a very good place to stay. Some renovation work going on presently, but not a problem to guests.

I booked three rooms for one night at the end of February as a surprise for my wife's 70th birthday. We had a superior double, our elder daughter took a single and our younger daughter, husband and two young children had a triple. All the rooms were delightful - our own was furnished in French-style white shabby-chic and had a large flat-screen television and a modern bathroom with separate shower. My only tiny niggle with the bathroom was the loo seat, which would not stay in the upright position unless held! The room was really comfortable and even had a sofa to sit on when watching the TV. There was an extra electric radiator in case the central heating wasn't enough and a well-stocked hospitality tray and kettle.

The bar, with its log fire and beamed ceiling, was lovely and welcoming, providing my wife and me with tea and pastries in the afternoon and finely-kept real ales later on.

I had booked our celebration dinner for all of us plus two friends, who live close by, and my brother and sister-in-law, who drove over from Herefordshire. Our waitress, Georgie, who apparently had only just joined the staff, coped admirably with the party of 8 adults, plus a 5-year-old and a 2-year-old boy. The food was superb. OK, as other reviewers have suggested, it is not gourmet or fine dining but it is tasty, well-cooked and beautifully served and presented. The steaks and slow-cooked lamb were particularly good. Everyone afterwards was highly complimentary about the whole dining experience.

Breakfast the following morning was excellent and there was plenty of it. The vegetarians in the family were properly catered for as well.

The service from the whole staff was everything we could have wished for. Michael and Marion, the hoteliers, can be proud of what they have achieved here in the relatively short time they have had the business. I can highly recommend the Old Crown for a comfortable stay and we will be coming back later in the year to stay for slightly longer.

Despite its reputation, we didn't see or hear any ghosts!

Room Tip: We stayed in the Edgehill Room, which, together with the Faringdon Room, is at the front of the hote...

We didn't stay here. It's definitely not fine dining but the food at lunchtime is really good. We were a party of 5 and we ate in the bar but there are various room off the bar, some with very low ceilings as it is what you might call a building of some character. Lovely log fire in the bar. The portions are generous and the food is fresh. Apart from the food on the menu there is a daily specials board with a number of appetising offerings. All served by smiling people who genuinely seem to care. Drinks are also reasonable with a bottle of very drinkable house wine available in red or white at £7.45. We live about 10 miles from this hotel and often pop over for lunch. The only downside - which is pretty minor is that they don't do any bottles of fizzy water (except soda water) and they don't do large bottles of still water. Quite surprising for a hotel/restaurant/bar.

Thank you for your review. For the record we stock both still and sparkling Highland Spring water and I will ensure the staff are aware of that.
