Old Crown Coaching Inn
Ranked #2 of 4 Hotels in Faringdon
Reviewed 12 June 2014

The Old Crown is a lovely, historic building, with lots of interesting features, creaky floorboards, a great courtyard, in the middle of a market square. On to the rooms, we stayed in a superior double, the two superiors are over the bar at the front of the inn, so can get quite noisy of an evening with the locals , we did know there would be some noise, so wasn't really that bothered, it is a pub after all! but if you want a quieter room, stay at the back. We loved the décor of our room, white French style furniture with a big , comfy bed. The bathroom was very clean with a great shower. The only downside was there wasn't many coffee and tea sachets, and they was not replaced the next day either or the cups washed, for two days stay, 2 teabags just isn't enough. We ate in the courtyard the first evening, as the weather was lovely , we ordered burgers which were homemade and huge! very nice. I was a bit disappointed with our breakfast, we ordered the full English which comprised of one small sausage, bacon a fried egg and a spoonful of beans, no tomato or mushrooms. It tasted nice enough to be fair, just didn't seem to be enough of it! There was tea, coffee, and juice to help yourself to. One the second morning we were served by a lovely lady who coped very well on her own with a full room of diners, she was rushed off her feet! The staff seemed nice enough, though we did ask a few questions about the building (being real history fans) but they didn't seem to know which was a shame.

On the whole we enjoyed our stay at the Old Crown Inn. One plus we discovered is that the bus straight to Oxford stops right outside the Inn, so very handy to use rather than driving, and at £6 return , cheaper too.

Room Tip: If you don't want to listen to the locals or traffic, stay at the rear of the inn.

We stayed for 3 nights and found a few 'little things' spoilt it. No remote for the TV and no effort made to provide one, light bulbs out and no attempt to replace them, no toilet roll left one day etc but feel that the main problem is they're trying to do it on the cheap. The manager works himself to the bone but there is not enough staff.. We arrived, to find no one on reception. There was a sign saying go to the bar so had to find that (up some stairs, down a passage and down some more stairs). The girl serving behind the bar showed us to our room (leaving the bar unattended). We popped back down later to ask for pillow cases for the spare pillows but the same girl (the only person on duty) didn't know where the houskeeping stuff was kept !!! Went for a drink later and the bar was packed (Fri night) with only one girl serving so we went next door and were served immediately.
The room itself (a superior I think it was called) was quite large with a big comfy bed and a very nice bathroom but was immediately over the bar looking out on to the town square. There was a singer on Friday night and he may as well have been standing at the bottom of our bed. At other times all over the 3 days they seemed to play head banging music in the bar which was clearly heard in our room. The courtyard area is very nice and olde worlde complete with stocks but as someone else has mentioned, breakfast has all the appeal of a wake. Milk runs out, orange juice runs out, saucers run out. No rack of toast on your table for a 'Full English', just 2 halves of a slice on your plate and that's it.
Would we stay again ? Probably but definitely get a room well away from the bar.

Room Tip: As far away from the bar as possible.

This is the second time we have stayed at this Inn - very clean and excellent rooms but let down by the staff - NOT the staff behind the bar, they are so friendly and helpful but when having breakfast we felt as if we were an inconvenience!! No greeting, no smiles just stood there with the pad and when I asked for yogurt or fruit I was told no and I thought as we were staying there another night it would have been good PR for them to have been provided as I do not have a cooked breakfast and just had toast. The second morning there was not even marmalade and when I asked was told 'if it's not there we haven't got any' and the coffee ran out and nothing more provided. You have a lovely hotel with pleasant bar staff so please train your waiting staff in the same way. I know the manager is new and was very helpful and pleasant so perhaps it's early days yet for all the staff. Lovely courtyard and good food in the evening but had to have breakfast elsewhere!!

Room Tip: Get a room well away from the front - a lot of noise from traffic etc.

We stayed in the court room and enjoyed a queen size bed each. It is a very large room and would be great for families or a girly sleepover party :-)
We found everything nice and clean in our room and the beds very comfy. The hotel staff were very helpful and looked after us well. We had a large cooked breakfast in the morning that was yummy but didn't eat there for a evening meal.
The town is only small but we found a few lovely places to eat ( the cafe next door is wonderful) there are a few really nice little shops tucked around the town as well. If you like walking there are plenty of places to go not very far away.
For the money we paid I would give 5 stars.

Had 2 evening meals and one breakfast at the Old Crown, really great pub food, would recommend. The room was comfortable, for an old coaching inn, and the staff were most helpful and very welcoming. Faringdon is a good central place to start a Cotswolds visit.

Room Tip: The rooms at the front have a good view of Faringdon market place. The back rooms may be the quietes...

This was our last stop on our round the UK trip, its a wonderful old building full of character and our room did not disappoint, but it went down hill from there.
In our room we discovered a smell of sewer variety, we were told there was a leak out on the street, that's when I started noticing little things in the room, from the bath panel being dislodged, also just enough toilet paper etc but we lived with those problems. We had gone out for a meal and decided after our meal we would have a few drinks in our pub/hotel.
Well there is no point going to bed till midnight on a Saturday night as the very loud karaoke lasts till then and it was below our room. We finally got to sleep after midnight only to be awoken by a road works gang at 2 am to came to fix the water leak which happen s to be right outside our bedroom window, they did not finish till 6am.
I think our biggest let down was the breakfast the following morning. No organization at all. No places were set, no coffee, no cutlery , no cups it was a joke. It could be so much better with better staff.

Stayed 1 night to attend a meeting. Loved the place. Very old, full of character.
Staff & customers were very friendly. Room 2 has a very comfortable bed & nice powerful shower in the en-suite. Good breakfast with as much coffee as you need to wake you up & newspapers to read while waiting for the full english to be served.
Very good value hotel & much better than your uaual cheap chain hotels.
