“Nice but could do better”
Reviewed 3 March 2014

We had a one night stay with friends on a living social deal. Although having been contacted on my mobile earlier in the day by the Crown to see if we were still staying that evening once we arrived we were told although our friends had a room we had not as they had us down to stay the following night. Even though I showed them the log of the telephone call they still couldn't understand why they had called. Eventually a room was found for us as a couple from St Helens cancelled. Our room was very clean and warm, however our friends room was so cold they returned to the bar for an hour whilst it warmed up. The evening meals were very good and were freshly cooked from local products. However once we had eaten there is very little room to sit and chat. We ended up staying in the restaurant by the log burner that threw out very little heat and the room was cold. We sat on two settees by the fire and the covers needed a good wash. There was another room which was used for breakfasts, it would be a good idea to open this up in the evening for people to sit in and have a drink. There was an open fire in the bar but this had limited seating, there were two real ales on and both were very expensive compared to what we had paid elsewhere in the area that day. The breakfast were very reasonable, and the staff were very friendly.

Purchased the offer from Living Social and so glad we didn't pay any more. Apart from being miles away, which we coped with, the room was not very clean. Stains on the carpet, cobwebs, dust, cracks in the wall and splashes of what I hope was dried toothe paste, down the bathroom wall. There was no heating in the room but when we complained they said all the electric heaters were gone, as heating in some of the other rooms didn't work then they told us some cock and bull storey that the heating may come on when theirs went off later!! I gave the one rate because it did have hot water. It makes Premier Inn look like a 5 star hotel. Would I stay again.................Never.

Room Tip: Find somewhere else to stay.

We had a 2 night stay at the Crown. The staff were friendly enough but a little short on conversation. The room was clean, but the whole hotel lacked attention to detail. Where do I start? The reception area. The carpet was covered in bits, in need of a good clean when we arrived and was in the same condition when we left. The bar had a log fire big enough to have heated the whole room, but was choked with ash, stopping the fire from burning correctly and making a mess everywhere. The same applied to the log burner in the restaurant. The relaxation area near the log burner had 2 settees. The covers required a good wash. The food was nice enough but the rear area of the restaurant, where we sat, was cold. Again this was due to the log burner not being maintained as it should. The room we were allocated was room 25 in the annex. Again, little details such as cobwebs on the ceiling corners that could have been removed with a quick flick of a duster and holes in the walls and ceiling that required a dab of filler. All these issues could have been rectified with a little thought and as I mentioned earlier, attention to detail.

Room Tip: The room we had faced away from the road and the main hotel was very quiet.

We had a two night stay at the Crown as a groupon offer and had booked only after checking out the website which show the most beautiful rooms, 4-poster beds, high beamed ceilings etc, etc. If we had paid full price the stay would have cost £257. When we arrived we were greeted by very friendly member of staff and the pub was very warm and inviting. When the receptionist looked up my booking she said 'oh yes you are a groupon aren't you, okay, follow me." We then walked out of the pub and down a path towards a couple of houses set back from the car park. I turned to my partner and said jokingly "oh look they are putting us up in someone's house". Trouble is that's exactly what happened. We walked through the front door, the stairs and walls were filthy, and it looked and smelt like my son's University shared accommodation!! The room was very basic (but clean) however it felt more like the staff quarters than a hotel room and certainly not the room that was advertised and not worth over £100 per night. The shower barely worked (it spat water at you) and and there was only enough hot water for one person.
In regards to the food and the service, we only ate their on one night as we arrived quite late and there was no where else to go. The food was okay but nothing special but the staff were what made the hotel. They were cheery and helpful at all times. In summary, it felt like as we had purchased the stay on an offer that we were not treated as full price paying customers in regards to our accommodation.

Just returned from a two night stay at the Crown. Don't worry about the negative views that some have written. The room we had was very clean, the room was spacious and the bathroom had plenty of hot water. We ate in the restaurant on both nights; the food was excellent as was the service from the very friendly staff.
