The Hopton Crown

We stayed at the crown last week for 2 nights and now I wish we had stayed longer. Everything was excellent, the accommodation was spotless, the staff so helpful , nothing was too much trouble and the food was lovely. We had breakfast and an evening meal , both freshly cooked and great.

Just returned from a 2 night stay at the Crown. Our second visit as we enjoyed doing so 2 years ago. We really like this hotel for a number of reasons. Firstly, the property is steeped in history and the building is wonderfully quaint. Secondly, the staff are always extremely pleasant and helpful and, of course, the local area is lovely. All big pluses in our opinion.

Ok so the downside based on our recent experience. The room was lovely even if the decor was a bit tired. Whilst others might offer negative comments on this, we see it as part of the hotel's charm - so long as the room is clean. Sadly, on this visit's evidence, cleaning needs to be improved as the carpet was dirty and no attempt had been made to vacuum it. Additionally, previous guests (perhaps weeks before our visit ) had obviously enjoyed a bottle of wine in their room and left the cork and plastic wrappings on a shelf which was clearly in view. The 'cleaner', however, failed to remove these and also forgot to provide bath towels on both days. As a result we started to wonder if less obvious aspects of cleaning had been ignored.

As for our previous stay, the food was tasty and reasonably priced. Internet access is free if, as we were told, 'you can find it'. We could now and then but coverage to be fair is patchy. Clearly not the Crown's fault but you might want to make urgent calls prior to arriving unless willing to use the hotel landline. From what we can gather no mobile signals are accessible from the hotel and immediate area. We rely on Vodafone so can only confirm it is not available.

In summary, will we go back? Very possibly yes but just to ensure that our experience was a 'one off' blip the management might want to consider checking rooms more frequently. Vacuuming carpets, removing rubbish and providing towels seem pretty basic house- keeping skills. So basic, in fact, that they might discourage repeat visits.

I have been going to the Crown for many years - stretching back to the 1980's.

It used to be an upmarket establishment that you would go to for a "treat". Over the last few years however, its crown has slipped and it can no longer be regarded as a premium venue.

The plus points:

The building has charm and character and its location - 2 miles from Cleobury Mortimer - and close to the Clee Hills, Ludlow and other attractions - is really very good.

It's bar area and restaurant have a good selection of beers, wines and spirits and are pleasant and airy. Outside seating areas in the garden are also pleasant.

We did not eat there in the evening (despite our efforts to) but breakfast was good, if rather idiosyncratic in it's format.

There is ample parking.

The wowcher offer was very good value indeed, regardless.

Neutral points:

The staff are not exactly rude, but do not really engage with you at all. In fairness, this may be because they are worked off their feet: serving breakfast, lunch, dinner, cleaning the rooms...

Some aspects of the pleasant-enough room needed attention: the shower head was broken and there was just one bin, glasses taken away after the first day, TV drove us mad with constant buzzing (we figured out eventually how to stop this)

Breakfast was 2 choices: cooked or "continental" - the latter was actually cereal and fruit, nothing more. So, you could not have, for example, cereal or fruit plus bacon. Very unusual.

Could not eat there. Arrived 8.40 and told the restaurant was serving until 9PM, then told at 8.50 that the kitchen had closed.

Second night went to the restaurant at 6.30PM and pretty much told that they were too busy to cope with our requirements: 2 x chicken curries.

Good news was we headed out to Cleobury both nights and had a great time!

The place needs sprucing up. The entrance is shabby - a coat of paint urgently required.

Wi-fi very weak. Vodafone signal non-existent.

Overall, the Crown is a shadow of itself and the current owners have work to do to keep it afloat.

No intentions of returning there which is a real shame.

Room Tip: 23 is a ground floor room in the extension with direct access to the gardens - a big positive.

My wife booked this months before our intended stay. We try to have at least two weekends away a year without the kids and normally pay a lot more for a nice hotel. A friend suggested a voucher deal and we decided to give it a go.
We got there and were met by some oaf on reception who seemed to be stoned and annoyed. Our room was a shambles (room 12) the lights didn't work, no hot water, no shower, stained carpets, broken tv and furniture that looked like it was dug out of a skip. The food is dull and poory prepaird. the staff (apart from two) shouldn't be working with the public.
We decided we
Couldn't face another horrible
Meal and night in the room so we checked out in the morning after a disgusting breakfast. The staff didn't even ask why.
I've stayed in one room huts
In the Far East which were classier and cleaner than this place. Stay at home and save your money.

Ok. My wife and I were on a Groupon shortbreak (3 nights) with our dog in this lovely part of the country. The weather forecast was good for our stay with warm days and nights promised.
When we arrived we were greeted and shown to our room. I know we had the dog so scope was limited, but we had a gable end room which seemed nice and tidy when we were first introduced. Then we found a scarf from a previous tenant in a drawer. Not so bad in itself until we realised that the room hadn't been used for some time as there were dried stains under the glasses in the bathroom so it hadn't been cleaned for our arrival. Before dinner that evening, which was ok but nothing special, I had a bath. I couldn't have a shower because the bath was under the eaves making it impossible to stand up.
On our first day after breakfast (juice and either cooked English or continental (no mixing) and toast with tea or coffee) we went for a walk. As promised it was very warm at around 28 degrees. Getting back to the room rather hot and sweaty, my wife had a bath. After various operations she is not good in baths, but accepts the problem and as usual "Lives with it". This would be ok, except when the tiles fell off the wall (behind her) into the bath she was in. Shaken, she got out, dried and dressed then I went down to inform the manager. I was told he had just nipped out but the "under manager (?)" said he would tell him as soon as he returned. We didn't see him that night.
On the Sunday, different staff were on duty, and we expected that someone would do something while we were out during the day and by the time we came back in the evening, we would receive an apology and the bath would be cleaned. No. Bits of tile and cement were still in the bath. This meant that after another hot and sticky day we couldn't use the bath. We still didn't see the manager.
Coming down for breakfast the following morning I asked for the manager. He wasn't in. After breakfast, we went up to the room to collect our things and loaded them into the car. I came to pay the bill for the dog, etc. and again asked for the manager. He still wasn't in.
I know it was a cheap weekend with the dog, but we should still have been able to use basic facilities like getting clean in a bath, if not a shower. The weather was hot and sticky and each day when we came back, we should have been able to get clean, but that was not possible and no-one seemed to be bothered. What would have been a great weekend, that we had been looking forward to, was spoiled by inadequate breakfasts, failure to respond to guest issues and a apparent lack of care by the manager/management. I know the manager cannot be there 24/7 but surely he/she should be able to delegate responsibility until he returned and appropriate action should be taken on his return. Return - not likely.

We booked to stay here for two nights and we were very happy with our whole experience. The hotel staff are friendly and were always approachable. Our room was full of character and had everything we needed. The food in the restaurant is beautiful and we booked a meal there for both nights because we were so impressed.

The location is very good and it's perfect for a quiet weekend away. We went to visit West Midlands Safari Park which is only 20 mins away, this was a great day out for us.

The only reason for us to not give 5 stars was because our plug didn't have a chain attached to it therefore it was stuck in the sink.

The Wi Fi couldn't be accessed everywhere, but you don't go away for the weekend to sit on your phone/laptop/tablet.

I'd definitely recommend this Inn for anyone who would like a friendly and homely place to stay. I wouldn't recommend this place for people who expect a Ritz experience (i.e. snooty people who don't stop complaining)

Did not expect the lap of luxury as we went on a deal but the bed had springs pushing through, the bath tucked under the eaves made it very difficult to use the shower attached to the taps . The receptionist complained loudly about my husband to other customers when he asked for a fan as we had a tiny window, one of the really hot nights. They did not have any.The free wifi did not work upstairs.Maybe if we had been in a room in the extension my review might be different.
Breakfast was sparse but the staff were very obliging .I'm afraid I would not recommend this hotel
