“Clean, comfortable, characterful!”

We are a mature couple and went with another couple on a Travelzoo deal with a 7 course taster menu. We were in the annexe in a lovely large room and bathroom. The meal was delicious and the staff excellent. We were asked beforehand if we had any particular dislikes and said we had none. However, for myself i am not a chocohollic and the desert was chocolate. I tried it but really did not like it. I apologised for not eating it, it was my fault for not mentioning it. I was asked if i would like something else but, as the cheese had appeared, i said no, i was fine. Five minutes later the waiter appeared with a lovely plate with a new desert of panacotta and fruit. I think this is really good service, to take the trouble to mention to the chef i did not like it and then the chef to take the trouble to make me another. Top marks!

Room Tip: the room was in the annexe and very quiet and comfortable

Just had a wonderful weekend at The Raven with a 7-course taster menu experience.
The Raven is well situated in Much Wenlock and is part of the heritage of the Much Wenlock Olympian Games that form am important part of the Modern Olympics.
On arrival we were greeted warmly and then, not just given directions to our room but taken there by a very pleasant lady. Always a nice touch I think. We stayed in one of the rooms in the separate Forge building a few yards across the car park. This was very spacious, quiet and very comfortable. Obviously, in inclement weather, this would be less than ideal but it really is a very short distance.
The reputation of The Raven's restaurant was our prime reason for booking and we were certainly not disappointed. Head Chef Jason Hodnett's team gave us an excellent 7-course taster menu that was innovative and delicious. The service was impeccable and the staff extremely pleasant.
All in all an exceptional experience and one we will want to repeat even though we live a half-day drive away.

Room Tip: The Forge rooms offer extra space for a modest extra charge.

We had the 7 course taster menu as an evening meal and stayed overnight in room 1, The Forge.
The food was excellent and the service was helpful and friendly. Breakfast the next day was also very good. We enjoyed walking round the village and learning a bit about it's history.
The room was a good size, the bed comfortable and the shower/bath fine. However, the decor was a bit tired, cracks in the paint work a rough looking carpet. The towels were even more tired. We would recommend the Raven, especially for food!

We enjoyed a nice little break here on a Secret Escapes deal with the 7 course starter menu.

Main hotel is full of character and in a good location to explore the cute little village. We stayed in the annexe and the room was spacious, clean and comfy.

Meal was superb - very impressed with the food, lovely wine and great, attentive service.

I think the hotel itself could benefit from a refurb, it's looking a little dated now, but all in all I'd recommend it to a friend.

We went here on a Travel zoo taster stay. As others have quite correctly said the hotel is a bit dated and the bar area really needs a re-vamp as it does indeed smell like the inside of a caravan. However it's a really old, and I would have thought, listed building so maybe it's just not possible. We stayed in The Forge in room 1, which was quiet and spacious. Couldn't dry your hair with any precision as the mirror was no-where near a plug, but the bed was comfy, loads of hot water and very nice bath and shower stuff.
Now, to the main part, the food. It was delicious. All the courses were fabulous but the best course was the wild garlic and mushroom porridge, just sublime. Wine was really reasonable and the staff were knowledgable and in the right place at the right time. All the folks round us were on the taster menu and it made for a nice atmosphere as we all discussed what we had had. Enjoyed every minute. Breakfast was nice too (but if I am being picky the tea was a bit meh!) Go, you won't regret it.

Room Tip: Forge is very quiet.

We had a very pleasant stay here recently. If you want a sterile hotel that you find in some chains, then this is not for you. If , however you are looking for a comfortable, friendly, very English hotel with a good restaurant, then look no further. Yes, I agree with other reviewers that the rooms need updating/refurbishing, but nontheless it was very comfortable. We had a large room and bathroom, and also an outside sitting area. The room was a little chilly, but this is probably due to not having double glazing. Having said that, noise was not a problem. The tasting menu was very good, and the breakfast was excellent.

Typical of many British hotels with fine dining restaurants, the actual hotel is not in the same league as the food. This is a destination restaurant for the Central region: young rising star chef Jason Hodnett runs a tight ship, executing a very good seven-course taster menu. The dinner atmosphere is relaxed and the staff are warm and professional. What the place needs is a total re-vamp. The furnishings are worn and shabby in the small public areas, with wood-chip wallpaper and cheap-looking tables and chairs, and the chairs in the bar room had dirty upholstery. Just a general lack of care and imagination in the decor. Our room (in The Forge annex) was okay and spacious, but there were frayed towels and ugly broken panels in the bathroom where the only "shelf" space was an old chipped chair. Some of these things could be addressed quickly and inexpensively: how many times is this the case . . . I can never understand this neglect. And why are there so many reviews which don't bring these things to public attention? It's the only way we can do our bit to try to improve the standard of accommodation in the UK!!
