“Best pub along the Llangollen canal”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 August 2014

If you are on a narrow boat on the Llangollen canal, don't miss this pub. Very friendly staff, good food and nice atmosphere makes this a an excellent place to moor in the evening.

When we entered and said we wanted to have dinner, we were told that there was a waiting time for about 30 mins, we didn't understand why, but it was ok. We sat down in the bar, got the menus and they took our order. And of course, we had some beer while waiting. The landlord is an extremely nice and funny person, joking with the customers and making sure everyone feels well. On the wall, he has a map with a pin at the home town of every customers from the last months. Our teenagers were challenged to solve some IQ puzzles, one of which they couldn't make, but he showed them the answer after dinner.

After abut 30 minutes, we were told that the table was ready, but not only the table, but also the food was prepared. The dining area is quite large compared to the bar area. The food was very good, same was the service. Definitely the best pub we visited on our canal boat holiday.

“A brief stop in our narrowboat”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 July 2014

We decided to call into the Jack Mytton for lunch and a pint. However they stop taking orders at 14.30 and so decided to have a drink instead and come back in the evening. Our boat being moored at the bottom of the garden meant we did not have far to walk.
My wife and I only drink draught Guinness and to our disapointment they only sell draught flow. ( Out of a can ) Not draught Guinness by any stretch of the imagination and yet they still charged top money for what is a can of Guinness.
Sadly we will not be visiting again. Unless they go back to real draught Guinness as they once sold.

“out of the way”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 July 2014

You have to know where this is, just off the road from Whittington to Ellesmere. First impressions leave you feeling slightly unease but the food was good and reasonably prices off the bar menu. They should do more with the garden which would improve the outside eating experience no end.

“Country pub full of character and more”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 July 2014

Visited when passing as part of a canal boat holiday on the Llangollen canal. So good, again we visited twice, the pub is full of character, bustling with locals and holiday makers which blended well together. It has a charming restaurant attached, meals on offer were plentiful and varied, with 'deals' for two or three courses in some cases. Staff were very helpful and polite, a credit to the landlord, who himself is a character with his own brand of humour. A little surprised they close between lunch and evening, not resuming service until 1800hrs, particularly in peak season but I have to accept the explanation from past reviews on this site. I can particularly recommend the chicken curry but be warned, it's stronger than you think for a pub curry. Excellent range of real ales, staff willing to let you 'taste before you buy'. The place as a whole is currently for sale and I hope the new owner maintains the very high standards of this establishment.

“Mad Jack's”

Great quality food and real ale, lovely location next to the canal

Bar area is too small so don't eat in there or you'll have people queueing for drinks standing over you as you eat!
