We visited this year for our wedding anniversary having been here quite a few times before. As ever, it doesn't disappoint - its an absolutely fantastic country hotel with superb food and lovely rooms, all with different features. Miles and Audrey, the owners, are great hosts, passionate to ensure guests have all they need. The restaurant is full of character, the menu changes every evening with excellent choices of home made, organic and local produce all cooked and presented beautifully. Breakfast if full and varied, again from local and organic produce and really sets you up for a day walking through the lovely countryside In which the hotel is set.
We will certainly be back again and again!

Food excellent - though asked for a recipe and was told the Chef didn't pass them on.
After dinner Tea & Coffee charged for at over £8 per day.
Coach Room Comfortable but a tiny bit damp - in the middle of summer!
Dogs not allowed in public rooms after 6pm, though we did manage to get the dog into the Bar after supper, thought that the rules were a bit steep, considering most of the residents were walkers or pet owners and this is a Dog friendly hotel.
Liked the Staff and the management most accommodating with maps and ideas for walks etc.

A small extremely well run hotel right on the Welsh/English border. The minute you walk in the greeting is friendly and professional. It is surrounded by fabulous countryside with the hotel providing plenty of suggested walks or rides with guides or maps to go with them. Remember that with the hotel pretty much at the bottom of the valley, that most routes start by going up! Afternoon tea is very good (and free on the day of arrival) and the evening meal quite excellent, with a first class breakfast, with fruit, cereals porridge, full Welsh/English and haddock and top class kippers amongst other choices . Clearly a popular hotel with the majority of guests having stayed before. Our room was perfectly adequate (we had booked late) with a very comfortable bed and several better rooms for the early birds. The greatest asset however is the quality of the friendly staff.

This hotel is a gem, service and food is of the standard that you would expect from a large first class hotel but at a much more affordable price. We booked this hotel at the last minute after having to cancel our big adventure to Borneo due to ill health, so this hotel had a lot to live up to, to compensate our disappointment. Well it certainly did not disappoint. The hotel stands in idealistic setting looking every bit as good as the pictures. The staff are all exceptionally friendly but in a very professional manner, nothing is too much trouble. Booking late we had agreed that we would stay in 2 rooms. One was a larger suite room which was extremely comfortable with a very large comfortable bed ( memory foam topper mattress) and a pretty secluded patio area with chair and table. The second room was one of their smallest room but was equally comfortable and attractively decorated. Both rooms had the usual selection of tea and coffee etc but with the added bonus of a tea pot, which we particularly enjoyed sitting on our patio viewing the spectacular countryside.
The chief was excellent and menu which varied every day had an excellent choice including venison and other game, a favorite of ours.
In all we could not praise this hotel enough, it far exceeded our expectations and did compensate our disappointment of cancelling our jungle adventure. We had booked into another hotel in Portmeirion for one last night, which was beautiful, but I can honestly say that I thought the chief in Penn-y-Dyffryn far exceeded the other hotel and also found that the staff here were more professional. This hotel is a real find and and had the added bonus of excepting dogss. This one I am sure we will visit often.

Room Tip: They advice that some of the rooms are not suitable for people with poor mobility due to steep steps...

We have stayed here several times over the last couple of years and absolutely love this place. During our stay we invited relatives over to stay there with us for one night and it was wonderfull to see that they felt the same as we do. If there is a place to destress it absolutely is Pen Y Dyffryn. Dinner was as good as ever, maybe the portions this time were a bit on the large site. While talking to other guest who had never been at Pen Y Dyffryn before we noticed that everyone feels the same, Warm welcome, friendly staff, great location and good honest food. Most people say they will absolutely visit again , and so do we.

We stayed at this charming country hotel for two nights en-route home after visiting family in Cheshire and it was our first time in this area near the Welsh border. When the reservation was made, the hotel was almost fully booked, however we were offered, and accepted, the 'Champagne Room', taking advantage of the 20% offer on DB&B.

From the outset, all members of staff were efficient, friendly and helpful. Our room was large and comfortable with the added bonus of a whirlpool bath. The dinner was tasty and well-presented and the breakfast had the added bonus of a super platter of fresh fruit.

Although the weather did not lend itself to pre-dinner drinks on the patio, the views did indeed coax us out one evening.

There are plenty of suggestions for things to do and places to visit in the area - we only wish we had the time to do more.

If you want a relaxed, comfortable and unpretentious place to stay in a quiet corner of the UK try the Pen-y-Dyffryn.

Although we live about 60 miles away we have never visited this part of Shropshire before. Earlier this year we stopped off for a coffee on our way to North Wales for the day and decided we would take one of our regular two night breaks in Oswestry. It was a good decision with plenty to see and do including three very interesting National Trust properties at Chirk Castle, Erddig and Powis Castle all within a short drive.

We chose the Pen-y-Drffryn mainly through tripadviser. It was an inspired choice. We had wanted a Coach House room with our own patio but they were all fully booked so went for the Garden Room on the first floor with views along the garden. As it was, the light rain in the morning and evening meant we would have had little opportunity to sit outside although for most of the time in the area we experienced pleasant summer sunshine.

When deciding where to stay I quickly look at some of the recent reviews on tripadviser before examining in detail the lowly rated ones. I generally find these fall into 3 categories, those which identify a genuine problem which may turn us off visiting, some where the reviewer has a bee in their bonnet with the issues identified not necessary significant and those where the review is a spoiler, sometimes written for a competitor and occasionally said to be by someone with years of experience in the trade.

I was not therefore too concerned when I read the review dated 8th August shortly before we set off, but there is always a niggle at the back of the mind. However dinner at £37 a head is good value particularly when part of a DBB package with 20% off during August. During our stay all the fruit at breakfast looked fresh and appertizing whilst the room was very comfortable given the age of the building and the prices charged.

I cannot rate it a "5" as I have done for a few extremely good but more expensive hotels where we have stayed but it is more than a "4" - I would give it a "4½" if I could.
