Reviewed 2 December 2011

We are just back from our 22nd stay at The Old Rectory and what a time we had! Me and my husband and his brother and partner arrived on the day that Ricky and John had got the official news that they had been awarded a coveted Gold Award by Visit Wales. They were naturally over the moon and so are we for them! Over the five years we have been coming to this beautiful part of Snowdonia we have seen The Old Rectory go from strength to strength and especially Ricky’s cooking too! This is such a special place and we have sent our friends, our family and even my boss here to experience what they have created on Talyllyn. This award is richly deserved and after dinner before the champagne began to flow I asked Ricky if I could informally present him with it on behalf of all who have stayed here and have had such a good time here at Talyllyn. I attach those pictures from a great night.

Got carried away ticking everything excellent, it hasn't got a pool, but the jacuzzi is excellent too!

Room Tip: Ask for upstairs rooms, although all rooms are excellent. Fantastic scenery views from all rooms.

You are really gluttons for punishment - staying with us 22 times now!!! Seriously we are just so amazed and flattered that you both keep returning. Therefore it seemed so right that you should present Ricky with the Visit Wales Gold Award that you kindly mention in this your latest review. As you know we are more than thrilled to be given this prestigious hospitality recognition and thank all who have congratulated us about it since. We look forward to seeing you both in 2012 for your 23rd time!!!

We have stayed with John and Ricky several times now, and have celebrated birthdays and wedding anniversaries with them. The welcome is always warm and friendly, the food is wonderful (surely the best pannacotta one could hope for) the views are gorgeous (whatever the weather) especially with the new orangery room, and the surrounding area is just spectacular. You just couldn't ask for more and we have recommended the Old Rectory on the Lake to many of our friends. Thanks both! John's films are a treat too.Marc and Helen

Room Tip: THe Rectory Retreat has become our favourite - lovely view and very cosy but stylish.

It is always a pleasure to welcome you both to The Old Rectory on the lake and we are so pleased that you keep returning for your celebrations. Thanks for taking the time to leave such a great endorsement which is so appreciated. I am also happy that you enjoyed the videos of the area which we show during pre-dinner drinks - they have been such great fun to make! I will pass on your kind remarks about the panna cotta to Ricky!
Our very best wishes, John -joint owner.

This was my second visit to The Old Rectory and they have made a few changes since I last was there. Now there is a delightful dining room which gives guests a great view of the lake while enjoying Ricky's amazing cooking. There is always something to do in the area and I had a great time walking round the lake and then going down to the beautiful coastal village of Aberdovey - while I was on the beach with my friend we were treated to the most amazing sunset. Then back to The Old Rectory for a great night's sleep. John and Ricky continue to offer a great experience and I look forward to returning - this time I will not leave it so long!

Fantastic stay at The Old Rectory On The Lake. John's Hospitality combined with Rickies mouth watering food are a winning combination.
We stayed here November 2011 to climb Cadair Idris . Walked directly from the Old Rectory and returned via Johns recommended , off the normal track route ,(Challenging to say the least in the extreme weather conditions and gale force winds that we experienced, but we did it!)
Honestly ask John for his recommendations on local walks , he knows what he is talking about .We tried another of his walks , the precipis , and this was a nice way to finish our stay!Superb views.
We stayed in the 2 Upstairs rooms with stunning views of the lake and very large bathrooms with mood lighting , large free standing bath and separate shower.Very spacious and comfortable beds.
Our original intention was to eat out , however after visiting the local hotel and being greeted with , we are not doing food , our mind was made up for us .......try Rickies food @ the Old rectory!............oh were we glad of the local hotels lack of hospitality! Trust me Rickies food was superb.
Breakfast was also superb with a fantastic choice of food to get you on your way for the day.

Whilst staying at The Old Rectory On The Lake , John & Rickie allowed us to celebrate an award they had just received from the welsh tourist board with them. A 5 star award. No not just any 5 star award as they were already a 5 star B&B , But a 5star Gold Award!
Congratulations John & Rickie . You deserve it.
Thank you for your hospitality....

We are so glad that you all had such a great weekend here and that you managed to get to the top of Cadair despite the rather challenging weather. We try and walk up the various routes as often as we can so we can pass on this knowledge to our guests. I am pleased that you enjoyed my cooking so much and was really flattered when you said you wished to dine with us on the second night. It was also fun that you were here when the champagne flowed after hearing the news about our Gold Award!

My wife and I returned to the Old Rectory in late October for our fifth stay. We were lucky with the weather - not that it really mattered, as the whole area is beautiful regardless of weather conditions - and, after a very substantial breakfast, made significant inroads into Cadair Idris.
There are great walking oportunities straight from the front door and, when you return, we can recommend Ricky's excellent evening menu - so good not to have to turn out to find somewhere decent to eat after a hard days walking!
We can recommend the rooms too. All very comfortable and spotless, with views of the lake.
John and Ricky's hospitality is always welcoming and we will be back again in the Spring.
Just discovered that they have won a Gold Award from Visit Wales; a thoroughly deserved accolade for their hard work and attention to detail that makes a stay with them so memorable.

Room Tip: Mynnydd Rugog has probably the best views of the lake.

It is always a pleasure to welcome you both here to Talyllyn and thanks again for leaving another review after your last stay. As you can imagine we were absolutely thrilled to be awarded a prestigious Gold Award by Visit Wales. They say the aim is to 'reward outstanding quality, exceptional comfort and hospitality in the serviced sector in Wales' and it goes without saying that this national recognition has made our year and the plaque is now proudly on our wall. We are pleased that you too think we deserve it! See you in the spring.

My wife was recovering from a nasty op and I decided that a few days at The Old Rectory on the lake would be a real tonic - and I was right. We were dead lucky with the weather and so fortunate that we found this place on Trip Advisor as it lived up to all our expectations. The approach is stunning and when we arrived this impressive granite building was reflected in the lake waters - it was so still it looked like a mirror. Annoyingly my camera was not charged then but the shots I got the next day were almost as memorable. Our hosts were charming and attentive and nothing was too much for them. We had elected to dine both nights and we were so glad that we had as Ricky's food is sublime. We left totally relaxed and promised ourselves it would not be too long before we returned to do it all again. Thank you John and Ricky.

Thanks for taking the time to leave this review and we are pleased that The Old Rectory on the lake proved to be just the tonic for your wife after her operation. You were here at a great time weatherwise and we were happy that you both were able to sit outside by the lake enjoying the occasional glass or two! Great therapy!!! Thanks also for your kind comments regarding my food. See you both again very soon.

It is always our pleasure to welcome you back to Talyllyn and we are just pleased that yet again The Rectory Retreat was all that you wished for in your ‘little bit of heaven’. Thanks for adding to our fireworks display – the reflections from them in the glassy still lake that night were just superb and as you know a great time was had by all who were also staying that weekend. Also many thanks for sharing with us your concerns regarding down the lane which have been passed on. You know you are all always welcome here at The Old Rectory on the lake. See you next year!
