The Old Rectory on the Lake
Ranked #1 of 5 Talyllyn B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 22 March 2013

Our second stay here and I would not hesitate to stay again.
Delightfully situated at the foot of Cadair Idris with stunning views across the lake this is a special B&B. The rooms are equipped to a high standard and those at the front of the Rectory allow you to enjoy uninterrupted views across the llyn to the crags beyond whilst lazing in bed.
This is a restful place with a relaxed atmosphere but great attention to detail for guest comfort. Evening meals are cooked and presented to a standard which you would find hard to equal in restaurants in the local area..
Recommended.

We were fortunate enough to come across The Old Rectory on the Lake on Tripadvisor. We were looking for somewhere we could relax, which was quiet and in a beautiful surrounding. The Old Rectory was all this and more.

John and Ricky were amazing hosts, being both welcoming and extremely accommodating. They have a great knowledge of the area and are more than willing to offer advice and help, so that you get the most out of your stay in this picturesque location.

The food was spectacular and Ricky must be commended for his skills in the kitchen, even if he is highly modest about it! I have paid more and eaten less well in many restaurants.

We stayed in the Tall-y-lyn room which was well presented, clean, and had a very comfy bed! It has all the items you would need including kettle, toiletries, modern TV (Samsung 3D smart TV in ours), and Wi-Fi (which is free of charge).

There are plenty of things to do, most of which involve walks around this very scenic location. We decided to take up the challenge of climbing to the summit of Cader Idris. John was very helpful in this regard and briefed us on the different routes we could take pointing them out on the map. The trek to the top via the Minffordd path whilst tiring, rewards with spectacular views on a clear day. We would highly recommend doing this. After this trek we were glad to relieve our aching joints in the Hot Tub at The Old Rectory.

Another thing to do is go Otter spotting at the lake. John mentioned to us that the lake was frequented by some Otters (a testament to the cleanliness of the lake). On our last morning I decided to try and find the Otters. To my surprise I managed to spot the Otters in the middle of the lake, and to my amazement after ten minutes they swam right up to the grass in front of me to eat!! Suffice to say I managed to snap a couple of pictures of them, which topped off a lovely stay.

We would definitely stay here again and would highly recommend it to anyone.

Thank you John and Ricky !!

Hello from south Snowdonia,
Your close up pictures of the otters and that view taken while you were walking up Cadair Idris are just incredible! Thanks for sharing them with us and also for posting this amazing detailed review. We really enjoyed meeting you both and I have passed on your kind comments about his food to Ricky. We hope that you will return in the future and in the meantime the best of luck with your respective careers.
Kindest regards from John, Ricky and the otters of Talyllyn!

Thank you to John and Ricky for a very relaxing stay in your gorgeous B&B.
We were the only guests staying as it was midweek but we were still given their full attention. I booked this as an extra treat during our weeks holiday in Wales and although we could only stay for one night, it really made it part of a very memorable trip.
The scenery is outstanding. We didn't do any mountain climbing as I have not been in good health, but when we arrived, the sun was out, so we did walk around the lake and it was just stunning. We even saw a new born lamb, who had probably only been born minutes before.
We had the smallest room, Tal Y Llyn and it was very comfortable and fitted our needs perfectly. The bed was super comfy and the bathroom was gorgeous!
The evening meal was outstanding, You would be mad not to try it.
I will be recommending it to all my friends and I wish we lived nearer, so we could go again.
Thank you again.

John and Ricky are both so brilliant - The location is beautiful, the room (Graig Coch) very comfortable and the food truly exceptional (take a bow Ricky). We spent 4 nights here as it was my 60th Birthday - and what a way to spend it. We didnt see the otters but we did have the Treecreeper visit over breakfast. Since we last visited, the owners have built an orangery breakfast room which affords brilliant lake views in the morning (and presumably at night time too when the summer comes). I was unfortunate to have a minor car mishap and strip the liner off my rear wheel arch - John came up with a recommendation of first class garage in Aberdyfi that fixed it really quickly (and cheaply) which enabled our planned excursion for the day to still take place. I dont often write any reviews, but in this case I can wholeheartedly recommend a stay in this brilliant little piece of Welsh Heaven. Dave Matthews from Longlevens in Gloucester.

Room Tip: Both upstairs rooms are very good - I have not stayed in the two downstairs

I don't know where to start...on arrival we were greeted by John who welcomed us to his B&B & showed us to our room. The room was amazing, views over the lake & up to the mountains and the bathroom was sooo luxurious with a roll top bath with blue LED lights, perfect for a lazy soak! Ricky (the chef) cooked us the best meals we've ever tasted every night, each course we had was michelin standard & even though I'm a fussy eater my plate was cleared every night! The hot tub was gorgeous, freezing outside but we soaked in the tub under the stars for as long as we wanted, beautiful end to our stay :) Overall it can be described in one word as - 'amazing'! a must stay whether you live 5 miles away or 500 miles away. thank you John & Ricky for a brilliant stay...we'll be coming back again soon :) xx

Had a lovely stay at the Rectory, only wish it could have been longer. John and Ricky are lovely, really welcoming. Our bedroom was gorgeous, bathroom better than a five star hotel. The food was excellent and siting under the stars in the jacuzzi makes you feel a million miles from the stresses of city living! Bed was probably the most comfortable we have ever slept in. Would definitely recommend, we were sad to leave, hopefully we'll go back one day!

Room Tip: We stayed in Craig Goch so not sure what the other rooms are like, but if you like a great view and...

Thanks for venturing over the River Mersey and then the River Dee to come and stay with us. It was great to meet you both and we are so happy that you enjoyed escaping for a time the hustle and bustle of city life. Also pleased that - like so many who stay with us - you so appreciated the hot tub under the stars.

Have just returned from a wonderful weekend at the Old Rectory. It was a very cold weekend but we had a very warm welcome from John and Ricky. Lovely room and excellent food. Hope to come back in the summer so we can enjoy a pre dinner drink on the terrace and enjoy the lovely view.
