For my 60th birthday it was decided to go to Talyllyn for the first day of the new operating season.
Unfortunately 'Talyllyn' threw a coupling rod and broke down on the return journey! This did not happen at the Rectory where the greeting was worthy of the Ritz in London. The two evening meals experienced were good on the first evening and magnificent on the second. Certainly worth dining if staying here. Could do with a better stocked bar and the car park is limited by lake side. Overall this was an experience that was memorable and should be tried in the near future.

Many thanks for coming to stay with us to celebrate your 60th birthday and we were relieved to read that there was no breakdown in service at this end of the Talyllyn valley! Thanks for taking the time to leave this review - I have passed on your kind comments about his food to chef, Ricky.
Best wishes, John - joint owner

Yesterday I went to the old rectory for lunch with a friend. On arrival we were warmly greeted by John who introduced himself and invited us to sit on the terrace in the glorious sunshine. We were given the menu and ordered a glass of red wine each,John came to take our order and a little while later we were shown into the pretty little restaurant in the conservatory with stunning views over the lake. We had both opted for the mushrooms with parma ham which were delicious, creamy sauce with mushrooms, crispy parma ham and little croutons served with homemade bread. My madie fordiewin course was the roast beef with Yorkshire pudding and the most gorgeous roast potatoes,my friend had the fillet of salmon which she said was lovely and all accompanied by a very interesting selection of nicely cooked vegetables. After a little rest we both decided on the raspberry brulee which was divine and served with a little home made shortbread biscuit which was the nicest I have ever had. The whole meal was a very enjoyable experience. Before we left we met Ricky the chef and John very kindly offered to show us the guest rooms which were absolutely stunning and bathrooms to die for. I thoroughly recommend Sunday lunch at the rectory and cannot wait to go again, thank you John and Ricky for making us so welcome.

This reads like a review from a newspaper dining out column and I am so glad you enjoyed your Sunday lunch here! You may know we used to offer evening meals to non residents but had to stop as we really did not have the room nor adequate parking. However bowing to local pressure - and wanting to thank in some way all those who have supported us in the past - I am now cooking on Sunday's and by all accounts it seems to be going down well. We look forward to welcoming you here again from the big city - aka Tywyn!

Returned again for our first visit of the year. Stayed in our favourite room Craig Goch. Everything was just as we like it,room was spotless ,atmosphere relaxed and friendly and the food was fantastic. Ricky catered for my wife's dietary requirements with imagination and great style. Idris gave us his usual warm welcome. Already booked for September, we hope the weather will be as good as during our last stay. Heard my first cuckoo of the year calling from the trees on the other side of the lake, but didn't catch sight. Cant wait to return in September.

Room Tip: The lake view rooms are great.

John and Ricky have asked if I can respond to this review as you kindly mention me. We were all pleased to welcome you to The Old Rectory on the lake for a third stay and are happy to read that everything was again up to your expectations. Also glad you heard the cuckoo - in fact he is calling now from behind the chapel. We all look forward to seeing you again in four months time - Craig Goch and its four poster bed (which I am certainly not allowed on ever!) will be ready and waiting for you both.

The Old Rectory was, for us, quite exceptional for a small guest house. The setting is wonderful - peaceful, tranquil, secluded, with super views of mountains and over Talyllyn Lake, great walks from the door or nearby, lovely drives on quiet roads, and good birdwatching, if that's of interest. There's also a very good hot tub. The bedrooms are spotlessly clean and comfortable, and ours - Mynydd Rugog - had a huge bathroom with good shower and a large bath. But if all that sounds good, the food served in the very pleasant dining room is superb. Breakfasts had a very large choice of fruit and cereals, and the choice and quality of the cooked breakfasts was well above average. And the dinners were quite delicious with an interesting menu. There were four courses, with soup, and then a choice of 3 starters, 3 mains and 3 sweets which, for such a small establishment, is, in our experience, unique. My wife's coeliac dietary requirements were well looked after by the chef, Ricky. We didn't explore the wine list, as the house red and white were reasonably priced and suited us well. To sum up, this is one of the best B&Bs we've stayed in, and the owners, John and Ricky, were obviously very enthusiastic to make our stay enjoyable.

It's perhaps worth a mention that we discovered The Old Rectory in an ad in the Talyllyn Railway magazine. I enjoyed a wonderful driver experience here, and a ride up the beautiful valley from Tywyn behind a carefully restored steam engine is well worth the time.

Room Tip: Mynydd Rugog had a super view of lake and hills and a huge bathroom, and was very comfortable.

What an amazingly detailed posting and we are just so happy Bob and Barbara that you enjoyed your time here with us so much. You came to celebrate a pivotal birthday and for Bob to drive the Talyllyn steam train and indeed we have had quite a few guests who have done just that - and, like you, have said it was an utterly memorable experience. We are so pleased that our accommodation proved also to be first class, Ricky's food was on the right lines and that your stay with us was just the ticket!
Best wishes, John - joint owner.

I spent three days here with my girlfriend. The setting is stunning; the lake and mountains are absolutely beautiful. The quiet was broken only by the sound of wind on the lake and the occasional bleating of lambs in the distance. We walked up Cadair Idris on the first day of our stay, going straight from the front door of the B&B up the mountain and back, no car required. Wonderful.

John and Ricky are great hosts who know the area well. They strike the perfect balance between entertaining you and leaving you in peace when you want it! The food was delicious and is highly recommended.

My experience couldn't have been better. I'm certain to visit again.

What a descriptive review and we so happy Adam that you appreciated your three days with us so much. Well done for getting to the top of Cadair Idris but have to admit we were getting a tad concerned when you had not returned by early evening but you certainly had a great adventure in amazing weather. We wish your girlfriend well with her horticultural career and if the Army ever brings you this way you know where we are!
Our kindest regards to you both, John and Ricky.

We have just enjoyed a wonderful long weekend at the old rectory. A beautiful place in a stunning tranquil location. A wonderfully warm welcome from John and Ricky with superb breakfasts and evening meals and recommendations on the local area. The room (Craig Goch) had beautiful lake views and a large bathroom with rolltop bath and shower. We did the climb from the hotel to Cadair Idris - which was a stunning walk (about 5 hrs), and a trip up the coast to Barmouth, Harlech, Port Merion. I'm hoping we will be back soon. Thanks John & Ricky

Room Tip: We stayed in Craig Goch overlooking the lake. A lovely room with very comfy bed and large bathroom...

I am so pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us and that you got up Cadair Idris from our home. I am due to run up and down the mountain from the other side next month so I know just how hard it can be! Thanks for the very kind comments you have written on here and it was our pleasure to have you both to stay.
