Absolutely stunning location & 1st class accommodation, food & hospitality. The walks around the lake are breathtaking. After a wonderful dining experience you can finish the evening off by taking a dip in the hot tub underneath the stars, perfect!

We spent two nights at the Old Rectory on the lake. John & Ricky were great hosts. We met other couples staying there and the whole atmosphere was great. We had a wonderful dinner one night and the cooking by Ricky was superb.

We wanted to hike during the day but didn't want the elevation gain of Cadair Idris. John selected a hike perfect for my wife & I with gorgeous views. We will gladly stay there again.

Room Tip: All rooms are good.

Greetings to you in Sacramento, California and thanks for taking the time to leave this glowing review of your stay in our home. Thanks for also including a photograph taken during your adventure along the marvellous Precipice Walk which is above Dolgellau. I often send folk to it and all agree that the views are utterly stunning - it's what you see from the top of Cadair Idris but is far less effort! Most of it follows the 800ft contour line, so there is not much climbing or descending involved. The precipice, along part of the western side, is by no means as terrifying as it sounds!!! Ricky says thanks for the kind comments about his food!
My very best wishes, John.

One of the most tranquil places on earth without a doubt. I fell in love with Wales when I visited last year and this place was the cherry on the top. The staff were so attentive and I loved talking to John about the area. What I noticed the most was the passion everyone had for the place and the care that was taken to ensure the guests were comfortable and had everything they needed. I really did not want to leave! It is really worth going out in the dark too, just outside the b and b to look at the stars, they look spectacular. This without a doubt is my most favourite place I have ever visited. Everything about it from the rooms, the views, the staff, service and not to mention the fantastic food! The Chef Ricky should definitely consider Masterchef! Thank you all at the Old Rectory for making the stay a magical experience. Ps to top it off, my boyfriend popped the question here too! I said yes of course :)

Room Tip: The mynydd rugog is the best room, the view when you wake up first thing is spectacular!

I'm not one for pouring praise in my reviews, but this time I just can't come up with a reason not to give these guys the 'excellent' rating. We stayed in the Craig Goch room (suite?), which is very spacious, has both shower and bath and is decorated/furnished in a very tasteful style. Then there's the food! All cooked on the premises by a very creative and talented chef, the breakfast choice will suit almost any taste or diet (that I can think of). Last but far from least is the location - which is just splendid. All this backed up with friendly attentive service, and a touch of dry humour from the host!

Room Tip: All rooms are good, the Craig Goch would take some beating!

I stayed here with my parents for 3 nights. They had the large double upstairs and I had the small double downstairs (hardly small!) and we had a superb stay! Fortunately, the weather was good for most of the stay and we enjoyed a walk up Cader Idris. John was a very funny host and enjoyed his hospitality. Ricky's food was absolutely superb!!! Overall, a very enjoyable stay! Will definitely be back again soon!! Thank you!

We are pleased that you enjoyed your three days with us Will and it was great to meet you all. On the day you went up Cadair Idris so did everyone in the whole house which was an Old Rectory on the lake record! It was also good that you were blessed with such good weather and were treated to incredible views from the top
My kind regards you you and your parents from 'funny host' John!
PS. Do get in contact with us as you have left your wet boots here.

Delicious food, beautifully presented in lovely surroundings with a wonderful view of Talyllyn Lake. John and Ricky run a beautiful establishment and go out of their way to make you feel welcome and special. We were even treated to a video of the local otters of Talyllyn Lake while waiting in the lounge to be seated at our table. Everything was perfect!

The Old Rectory on the lake has been overlooking Tal-y-llyn, in south Snowdonia for over a hundred years. This imposing residence stands on the foothills of Cader Idris and offers five star luxurious bed and breakfast accommodation in a stunning setting. We are equidistant between the bustling market towns of Machynlleth and Dolgellau and the delightful coastal village of Aberdyfi. The Old Rectory on the lake has three double letting rooms - all ensuite - and all look out onto the lake. Our bathrooms upstairs were described as being 'outstanding contemporary ensuites' by the Visit Wales inspector when awarding us five stars.Already our culinary reputation is beginning to spread - indeed we have even been mentioned by name in The House of Commons during a debate on Welsh produce. Our chef can cater for any dietary requirement. The Old Rectory on the lake is licensed. We suggest that this is the ultimate place to unwind; the scenery is breath taking and the silence deafening. All our beds have crisp Egyptian cotton sheets and freshly laundered fluffy towels are in every bathroom and also in the sauna and out outdoor hot tub area which - like most of our windows - looks out over the ever changing Talyllyn - enthusiastically penned in our entry in Alistair Sawday's Special Places to Stay book as ' large, lovely and luminous'.We look forward to perhaps welcoming you here very soon. ... more   less
