A unique chance to stay in a really interesting historic building set in fantastic mountain scenery. Lovely. Everything we needed was provided including maps and local information, soft white towels for after a refreshing shower and comfy sofas for snuggling with a book. Comfy beds too.

“Beautiful historical church in stunning surroundings”
Reviewed 12 April 2016 for a stay in April 2016

We chose St Marys church in Tal-y-llyn because we wanted to stay in more unusual accommodation in a rural setting with beautiful views. We were not disappointed. We were greeted warmly by Pete the owner of the property and shown the ropes. Pete has lots of information on the history of the church, believed generally to be 9th century. On your doorstep are mountains, sheep (lot of lambs during our visit) and the lake. We visited King Arthurs Labyrinth, Dinorwig Power Station and the Tal-ylllyn stream railway. We ate at the Cross Foxes which I would highly recommend, Thanks Pete for investing in this historic building and we hope to return in the future.

“A fabulous getaway with a historic twist.”
Reviewed 13 March 2016 for a stay in March 2016

My wife & I are just back from our short honeymoon stay at St Mary's & we are still buzzing about the whole experience.
We arrived slightly early & were greeted by Peter, the owner of St Marys, he welcomed us with a smile & gave us a brief rundown of the history of the building & the site, he also gave advice on the local restaurants & things to see/do.
St Mary's is a credit to Peter's hard work as it provides excellent accommodation in a beautiful building with equally beautiful vistas outside. Peter explained some of the hoops he had to jump through in order to achieve his hopes of sharing the church with visitors & to be honest I think most people wouldn't have seen a project like this through.
Anyway I digress, my wife & I visited St Mary's in order to take a break from work & the kids & to just reconnect, the church was the perfect location for this. Most of our stay was spent indoors enjoying the accommodation however we did eat at The Cross Foxes and it was superb, we also took a stroll along the promenade at Tywyn and a bimble up Cader Idris.
We thoroughly enjoyed our break and will continue to use St Mary's as a getaway for as long as Peter allows, this is a beautiful old building set in the breathtaking valley that Wales is famous for, it has been thoughtfully furnished and equipped & I can confirm there were no bumps in the night and it was nowhere near as spooky as I expected.

We found this little historic gem after lots of searching for a peaceful autumnal retreat,we were not disappointed. The colours of the landscape, the peacefulness of the lake and the history of St Marys added up to a perfect retreat.
We were met on arrival by Pete, who deserves much recognition for his perseverance in preserving and creating an idyll for the lucky few to experience. He showed us around with pride and we felt his protectiveness and love for the chapel. We were left feeling humbled as custodians of this historic place.
The converted vestry is the main living area, with all you need to cook the great local produce,we didn't mind not having a washer or dishwasher and loved the idea of watee straight from the lake,The wifi is a plus as there is no phone signal, although there is land line if needs must. The pod is a real marvel, cosy, modern but befits the surroundings, some may not like the eco loo, but,it's a small price to pay.
Lots of people have asked us, did it feel strange sleeping in a chapel and we both answer "no" It fills you with a feeling of past history and calmness. We never stopped marveling at the Tudor ceiling and the working pump organ, played some of Petes amazing classical music collection, with the beautiful acoustics of the chapel.
The graveyard is open to the public and we had several visitors,3 or 4 of whom we invited in to have a look around, they were all appreciative and said we should have charged lol.
The surrounding areas are beautiful, but,we didn't feel the need to stray far and were always happy to be back at our lovely sanctuary. We had our little dog with us,he slept soundly in the vestry . Hopefully one day we will return to this special place!

Thanks for giving St Mary's such a kind review ..I saw from your TripAdvisor profile that you are both frequent reviewers and so feel proud that I didn't disappoint . The old Church has had quite a long story to tell having been in existence on this site in one shape or other since the 9th Century...all those happy and sad events that have passed through those doors ...the present 15th Century building still looks good and transports you back to those bygone days ...I am indeed proud to be its custodian .
Once again thanks for your visit and appreciation of St Mary's and Talyllyn.
Regards
Pete

Firstly the owner Peter greets you with a warm welcome and a wealth of knowledge about the old church. We fell in love with this place from the off its a magnificent building in a magnificent setting that will both rival anything in the united kingdom. St Marys caters for your every need and we both cant believe how fortunate we have been to stumble upon this jewel. We had to go and buy another SD card for our camera as we took that many photographs and it does not matter if you in the church, within the grounds or out and about there really is a photo oppertunity wherever you look.for me if your thinking about it ~ dont hesitate you will undoubtedly have one of the most enjoyable experiences that you will have ever had.

thankyou peter and look forward to seing you again soon.

P.s you cant get a phone signal at St Marys however if you have a iphone then you can text and make calls using the comlimentary wifi additionaly there is a land line in the church that has no toll but has a honesty jar ,we used the landline for incoming calls only ....

I will look forward to your next visit ..and don't forget to bring a few more LP's with you ....!!

St Mary's church is a special and historic place that we felt like we went back in time.
It was a privilege to stay in such an old property filled with original features.
Peter has done an excellent job to adapt St Mary's to living accommodation considering that listed property has so many limitations.
Pete has provided everything you may need to feel at home with some thoughtful extras such as record player and classical record collection. Also several portable heaters and atmospheric lighting.
Kitchen is very well equipped and don't worry about the eco toilets, they are very easy to use.
And make sure you don't forget your camera as photo opportunity are endless.
We love our week in St Mary's so much that we already planing to come back next year.

From the first time we saw this holiday advertised we knew that we had to experience it
The build up to our holiday was enhanced by all the reviews that we read.We spent a week in this beautiful ,scenic ,location in the most amazing accommodation,St Mary's still retains the church's original features,The accommodation within the church is well equipped for a holiday, there are thoughtful touches, large bath SHEETS ,music to play in the church, books,DVDs,Play station plus games, fairy lights in the upstairs Gallery and torches should you need then. There is plenty of seating inside,Pete has added plenty more to the original outside as well,so you will be spoilt for choice on where to admire your surrounds from,We have had such a lovely holiday staying here in this very special place, you never really get over it,the time spent here seems to heighten your senses, you will find yourself's continually admiring St Mary's,inside and out.Dinning at the picnic bench in the churchyard, sitting at the top the hill overlooking the lake and listening to opera in the church,I had to stop myself from texting Pete to say" guess what we are doing!". Star watching without light pollution is great. We did walk round the lake,we visited the waterfalls, also the towns along coast, but the highlight of our holiday was St Mary's ,when we returned home from our days we just looked on in awe. These memory's will stay with us.Thank you Pete

The moment I met and showed you around the old Church I knew you were going to embrace this quite awesome place ..and by the sound of it you really had a great week ...
At the end of each visit I return to do my changeover.. and look forward to it ..
I open the vestry door and look to see how well St.Mary's has been looked after and to check if a small note is left from the departing guests ..
You certainly left it spotless and along with the kindest of message.
Thanks for making my day and for supporting St.Mary's sustainability ..
Hope we'll see you again one day ..
