“Living in the past”
Reviewed 26 May 2014 via mobile

Stayed here as a present. The first room we were given was the home of many spiders who resided in comfort. We asked for another room which was an improvement if far from scrupulous. The lack of care and attention is nearly criminal. Uncared for and although views are amazing this does not live up to a carefree stay. We had to ask for heating and hotwater. Alot more attention to detail is needed in this hotel which is rooted in 80s., shame the prices aren't. . The owner explained that flies mean lots of spiders. I felt like saying he should put rats in to eat the spiders! Pay little for cold, unclean and dog haired rooms! Breakfast was good though.

Booked to stay here for 3 nıghts.
We entered the room ın the annexe, found that there was a stale smell.
There was a haır about a foot long ın the bed,wıth food crumbs on the bedsıde cabınet.
The floor looked lıke ıt was last hovered ın 1969,haırs ın the plughole and wallpaper comıng off the wall, and staıned pıllow cases.
The TV was slıghtly bıgger than an ıpad.
All ın all we stayed for about 5 mınutes and refused to stay there, drove on to Barmouth and had a great tıme
Would not recommend thıs hotel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Such lovely views from hotel that we have always been prepared to give the hotel a second chance..Sadly no more. This hotel could do so much better. We were not expecting a modern fancy hotel just good old fashioned quality. We paid £120 per night for it. Our stay was ruined by:
Very uncomfortable bed
Dogs hairs in bed, dirty windows,
no instructions re how to set the bathroom heating etc
Heating did not work in bedroom.
Plastic cups rather than glass in bedroom - superior bedroom really?
Everything seemed to be done for cheapness eg very cheap and nasty tea bags,
At breakfast a wait of 30 mins for tea and 55 mins for breakfast because it was busy!
On checkout the bill was wrong,
The owner talking negatively about a very loyal member of staff to other guests very unprofessional.
There are hotels at the other end of the lake which have five star reviews which we will try next time our loyalty has gone, after 10 yrs of visits

Room Tip: Not on the road side if you are a light sleeper as lorries go past from 6am

we stayed at this hotel in february the rooms were cold and tired, the owners are so unfriendly there was a dog sitting on the chairs ,that belonged to the owners the place was cold the shower didnt work properly , the food as as if it was microwave food. if we should have realised what type of establishment this was at first glance the reception area is like a dumping ground also there apperaed to be a office there but there was bills all sorts of paper work all over the reception unfortunatly our stay was spoiled what a beautifull hotel this could be in the rightfull hands of somebody who could put all the tender loving care back in to would we return never would we advise others no

I have been staying at the Tyn y Cornel on and off for the last fourteen years, this stay was my first since 2011.

I have looked at all the reviews posted and can only conclude there is a Summer/Winter management split.

I know it has had its' problems in the past and of course it's' limitations within the bounds of an older property. The stunning location and rustic charm has always offset the lack of mod cons and frankly, thank goodness there is no mobile 'phone signal!

As a group of blokes on an annual trip, we look forward to a few ales, good food and a warm refuge after a rigorous day in the Welsh countryside. To return home after a hard day with wet gear to find the heating had been switched off was bad enough, but the ruination of three barrels of real ale was criminal. This coupled with poor food and rudderless management ruined a good trip away for all of us.

Overall, gutted......

Room Tip: Main building bedrooms very tired, annex bedrooms Baltic....

I am in total agreement with some of the previous posters who advise that if you are after a hotel with all modern amenities then this is one not for you. However if you want a comfortable hotel with good service and stunning views then this is perfect. We arrived on a Sunday afternoon and a charming welsh speaking gentleman, who acted both as receptionist and waiter, looked after us very well and was able to answer all our questions. Our bedroom did not have a full lake view but I think this was an advantage as I am a light sleeper and the front of the hotel is near to the road. We looked over the stable block to the Pass. The bed was comfortable and the shower in the bathroom was efficient. There were two comfortable chairs where we could sit and watch the TV without neck strain! We didn’t want to eat much after our journey but we were able to eat delicious bar snacks in the conservatory dining room which had full lake view as did the lounge. The breakfast was good. What caused amusement and broke the ice with some other guests was the fact that we had to make our own toast and could n’t work the machine. The toast landed on the floor! The hotel has Wi-Fi but no mobile signal. We were able to use the land line but I am not sure if it can be used to access mobiles. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Super location, I had a nice large room with a view of the lake in the new build part of the hotel. Poorly designed over the bath shower though: water all over the floor despite my best efforts. Restaurant for dinner was fine. The only downside was the breakfast which was somewhat disappointing both in its size (I aksed for just bacon and sausage and received1 small piece of bacon and a thin sausage, really?) and quality.

Breakfast starts at 8am on a weekday which is the latest I have ever seen anywhere and was a bit inconvenient as I had to be in Dolgellau at 8.30.

Room Tip: Rooms in the new build section are a nice size
