“Simple: the best hotel in the UK”

We've been lucky enough to stay at Babington House many times in the past six years and it never fails to delight. It has a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere, excellent food & service and amazing rooms. You can (within reason!) do what you want when you want wearing whatever you want - perfect!

The new(ish) spa is a great step forward in lots of ways. We have always travelled with kids and I can understand some of the older comments on this forum (from those without children in tow) complaining about noisy kids. This problem is now largely solved thanks to the child-free spa and child-free rooms that accompany it. We also noticed that the 'adults-only' swimming times were firmly (but politely) enforced.

It can be a nightmare getting a reservation here but that's for good reason. It remains the benchmark by which all other similar properties are judged, and for good reason.

After a long weekend at Babington I felt more rested & relaxed than a full 10 days in Mauritius. They just have the service & facilities about perfect. Its not a super glamorous property & its certainly not deferential service but its relaxed & easy & very well designed. We had perfect weather which definitely helped but I'm sure it would be very cosy in front of the fire there in the winter too. We had a slight drainage issue in our bathroom as we stayed in a relatively new room but it was a short term incovenvience for us.

Room Tip: Go for t new rooms by the walled garden

I’ve just returned from a 2 night stay at Babington. Just to give the full picture: this is a hotel I’ve dreamt of going for at least 5 years, I love my boutique/luxury hotels and have very high standards, but always believe this would top all the rest, and indeed many I’ve stayed at clearly use Babington as their own inspiration its always quite obvious!
We stayed in a main house, attic room.
Despite the online cleverly angled pics to make this room appear doubly as spacious as it really is, it was still a lovely room to stay in, with a sunken bedroom and then with a raised level (all open plan) through to the small lunge area with big screen tv, and right next to it, basin and bath. At first having a basin/bath so close to a living room.tv area seemed bit odd and it took me a while to get used to it.
The cupboard was also teensy, so if you are after space, this isn’t the room for you.
I had a facial and as a couple, the mud experience, and again both were fantastic. We were lucky to go over a weekend with the hottest, sunniest weather of the year so far, so could make good use of the outside pool and area around it for sunbathing. There aren’t huge amount of loungers, but if you go down to the lower deck besides the pool there are some smaller loungers and chairs there, so we always found a space. There is also an indoor pool along with steam, sauna and aroma rooms, all also really good.
The indoor spaces of bar and restaurant are just as I imagined bustling at night, both just very cool, stylish places to relax and enjoy some drinks and food- and people spotting- as most people also indulged in!

One thing I was worried about having read comments on here- was that the staff being quite used to celebrity cliental (all we saw were some not-that-well known aging actors during out stay) that they appeared snooty and less helpful to their non celebrity customers. This just wasn’t the case at all during our stay, and everyone I encountered was more than happy to oblige with any request and very warm and friendly.

I can’t give this any less than 5 stars, but a few minor points to highlights:
While the quality of staff was brilliant, at busy times- on reception and in the bar- the staff seemed slightly rushed and often I felt waited too long to be seen to, often as staff were interrupted by the telephone, something we experience both in reception and the spa several times.
A lady we asked about ingredients in a dish said she’d go and ask the chef...she came back, did the rounds and walked past us several times. In the end we had to pull her over to remind her and ask for the reply!
The lack of options for veggies. Having worked in media myself and knowing that so many creative/media types don’t eat much meat, and this is definitely a crowd Babington attracts, it would be nice to have more than 1 vegetarian option.
I really think breakfast should be included! The rooms aren’t exactly cheap, and to charge breakfast on top does just seem a bit ‘mean’!

You really feel like you enter a secret, private sanctuary coming here, and so many other guests we talked to/overheard were all saying they are regulars/love coming at any opportunity to escape. If we had the time- and budget, we would definitely return much more often!

Having friends who have raved to us about Babington House we were really excited to be spending the last leg of our staycation there. Maybe our expectations had been raised too high.

The negatives were:
Our room in the Coach House was generously sized however the bedroom was on a mezzanine level accessed by a spiral staircase; no doubt a great design statement but a practical let down.
The bathroom was beautiful but the bath leaked. We were alerted to this by reception who had received a worried call from the occupants in the room below. It appeared to be a leaky waste pipe and, having reported it, we were not aware that any effort was made to fix the leak. The towel we put down stayed under the bath for the remainder of our stay, and we stayed away from the bath.
One of the bathrobes provided was torn.
The TV in the bathroom did not work.
The indoor swimming area was being renovated (this wasn't mentioned at the time of our booking or on arrival) though kept open. The result was a dusty area and builders wandering in and out of the pool/spa area - not the exclusive spa experience we had expected.
We had planned to see a film in the excellent cinema facilities on our final night having been informed that a particular film was to be shown and we adjusted our evening around this, only to find on being seated that the film we had wanted to see was no longer being shown. As far as we know, nobody had attempted to inform us of the change.
On the final day the wrong newspaper was delivered to our room.

The positives were:
Great ambience, service and food in the bar and restaurant.
The grounds and buildings are fabulous.
The staff were lovely.

Babington House is in beautiful grounds. There is the main house which had the main restaurant, cafe, bar and library, and then there is the coachouse (which is where we stayed), there are family rooms in another part of the grounds. Spa, gym, creche and an indoor and hot outdoor pool .Our room was huge, big flat screen tv, sky, dvd player (you use any dvd from their own collection for free), free wifi , free tea/coffee facilities, large settee, coffee table and the bathroom was wonderful - very big, stand alone old fashioned bath and walk through shower with the largest shower head I have ever seen. The decor is very tastefully done to look 'cottagey'. The bed was a super king and very comfortable but we could hear the upstairs when they used their bathroom but we were awake then anyway so it wasn't a problem. The food was amazing as was the staff - nothing was too much trouble - can't wait to go back.

I stayed at Babington for a weekend in the coach house in a fabulous shabby chic two storey room. From the start the staff were friendly and efficient and we were shown to our room. It has a very relaxed vibe and nothing seemed too much trouble for the staff who are helpful but do not fuss over you which is a good thing. The house and grounds are beautiful and it was great fun borrowing a bike and cycling through the country lanes. There was a real mixture of ages which was nice to see. When we stayed it was fairly quiet not many children in the pools and early in the morning we had the pools often to ourselves although we were up at the crack of dawn but it was great swimming in the outdoor pool to the sound of rooks overhead and misty morns. The afternooon tea was lovely but some savouries would have gone down well too. The food in the main restaurant for dinner had quite a limited menu but the food was quite delicious bistro style. Breakfast which was not included was very good and had a great selection each morning. Service was a little more chaotic - not noticing whether we had butter or a knife etc. I think maybe considering the price of the rooms that breakfast should really be included. But these are small gripes and overall I could not really fault our stay. It was a fabulous weekend in a beautiful house and location. I loved it. Luxury without the bling.

This is the heaven on Earth. For us, it doesnt get a lot better. Wonderful premises, fantastic rooms, incredibly friendly staff ( they showed us around all the rooms at the end of our stay and made sure we had a wonderful room, lighting the fireplace in the room in the evening), lovely people and a great atmosphere. Freqyent celeb spotting as well, if you are into that kind of thrill. The bathrooms are lovely, too and generously filled with cowshed products. If you are in for a treat, this is definetely the place to go.For the seriously high end price, I personally think they should include the breakfast, it just feels unnecessarily stingy.
