We were here for a family dinner and overnight stay. Let's begin with my starter of three rubbery microwave scallops. The other starters look equally dreary and unapetising. However these were delicious in comparison to the mains which comprised of cold undercooked steaks without any veg or sauce (apparently sauce is extra and only if you ask for it!) an inedible rack of lamb and a dry and flavourless duck dish. The rissotto rice with the swordfish was a particularly repugnent moist sludge. The wine was drinkable but overpriced.
The room we were given had a funny smell outside of it and the beds were as lumpy as the main courses. If you're expecting a comfortable sleep this isn't for you!
So to sum up awful food, uncomfortable beds and more expensive (and worse) than many B&B's.

The hotel was being refurbished but there was no disturbance and our bedroom had been done and was very smart, clean and comfortable. The bathroom was almost perfect. However the bedroom was up a step from the bathroom and a small hallway and had no heating apart from a radiator in that hallway. Despite it being exceptionally mild November weather, the heating was a bit inadequate. The shower looked like a power shower but in fact gave only the usual gravity spray. OK though.

We were not offerred a wine list at dinner, and, despite coffee being part of the set menu, we had to make a point of asking for it. The coffee at breakfast was tepid and had to be returned for a fresh brew. Nevertheless the food was excellent in both quality and quantity and the a la carte menu was quite extensive. As we went as Travel Offers members (q.v.), at £80 for dinner, bed and breakfast for two, it was great value for money.

Friendly staff and efficient reception.

We had booked in for an overnight stay before we became aware of previous reviews. Luckily we decided to stick with our arrangements. After checking in we went to our room trying to identify the smell which was a feature of previous reports. No smell. Our room, which admittedly was an executive room, was delightful. Newly furnished with lovely views towards Brent Knoll. Large well equipped bathroom. The restaurant was fine albeit not well used on the Tuesday night we were there, But the food was good and portions more than adequate. Breakfast next morning was very good. As we checked out we told the receptionist of the bad reports that we had read. She told us that the ownership of the hotel had recently changed and work was proceeding to refurbish the bedrooms. We were very pleased with our stay and hope that other visitors will also enjoy the hotel.
