“Nice food, service OK, but where was everyone?”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 March 2013

Stayed in the area with a few friends and The Burtle was recommended to us (as the three pubs in the village we were staying in had closed). So we were there on a Friday and Saturday evening. On Friday we had to move table a few times to escape draughts but when we settled, near a big open fire, we were OK. The liver was indeed delicious, other food seemed fine from others' comments. Had to get my drinks glass changed because it was cracked.

But on both nights, the place was nearly empty, very few people even there just for a drink. And yet all three dining rooms were laid out and ready for custom. So I suppose this might be the next pub in the area to close.

“stay away”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 January 2013

lovely old pub with log fires but be warned don't eat here they have no idea, the meat was all under cooked and the veg looked like it had been there for days and at £12.95 for a Sunday carvery you would expect some quality, its a real shame it could be a lovely place.

“Charming pub on a wet evening!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 December 2012

We arrived at half three and the pub was almost empty. Lovely atmosphere with beams, open fire, benches, stuffed birds in cases, old farm implements etc. Good real ale helped too! We had a lot of menus to choose from and they were very adaptable about picking and choosing. Yes, we waited a while to be served but its a pub, for gods sake, not Macdonalds and the pace is meant it be slow and relaxing. That's why the beer is so good! They were friendly and helpful, food was generous without being super sized and unfinish-able and we had a lovely hour or two. We will go again as it combines nicely with a walk on the Somerset levels or watching the Starling murmuration at the nearby RSPB reserves.

“Why so empty on a Saturday Night”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 September 2012

The décor and general appearance are wonderful - a real traditional country pub with beams, nooks and crannies. The food is excellent and the staff friendly, so why is it so empty on a Saturday evening? When we arrived at 7.45 there were three other couples in the Pub and the restaurant area was empty - but there were at least 5 staff, so how do they stay in business (perhaps they are very busy for their Sunday lunchtime carvery)?

We live 2 miles away and there are 3 good food pubs closer to us, so perhaps its the mile on the very bumpy Somerset levels [sic] roads that lead to Burtle? I suppose if you want to be sure of a table without booking then this is the place to go, but of course there is no atmosphere - on the other hand if you want peace and quiet then this is the place for you.

I would have given 5 stars but for some small niggles
- we were the only couple of three in the pub and the other two already had their meals, yet it took 45 minutes for our meal to arrive. Whilst we we happy to sit an chat, I wonder how they cope during busy periods.
- Fillet steak is sold by the ounce and "trimmed as close as possible to ensure you get a lean steak". Very strange measure, especially as my (admittedly delicious) steak was about 10% fat & gristle. But don't get me wrong there was ample and I was mostly satisfied.
- Tomato Ketchup is served in a giant 1960s Wimpy squeezy red tomato....

So in summary, good food, good value for money, pretty pub, good location, at least as good as other food pubs in the area; well worth the effort of the drive out there.

“An absolute disgrace !”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 September 2012

Went here for a sunday lunch, the staff were totally dis interested and the food of exceptionally poor quality. The choldrens play area was full of rubbish, dogs mess, long grass and two large diesel electric generators that were not even fenced off. When coming to pay the bill I was then told that there was a surcharge to pay by either debit or credit card of £ 1.75, this was not clearly marked or pointed out to me at the time and there is no cash machine on the premises or near vicinity. All in all a terrible experience and looking at previous reviews I am not th first. Never never never again !!!!
