Lakeview Holiday Cottages
Reviewed 1 September 2013

With fishing prominently featured on their website, we booked Lakeview so that my parents and son could fish 'on our doorstep'. Disappointingly there was not a fish to be seen which was confirmed by fellow anglers too, resulting in us having to drive to nearby lakes each day - not the relaxing break we had hoped for. We found the Manager very abrupt and we did not get the 'warm and friendly welcome' mentioned in other reviews! We were not shown round the accommodation on arrival either. The accommodation was very comfortable and decorated to a high standard so if this is what you are looking for then Lakeview is for you, if you are a keen angler however then don't bother. If good customer service is what you expect perhaps it is best to visit in the quieter months as we did not get the service we expected on this visit.

Thank you for your constructive review - we do take these reviews very seriously as we know other potential visitors will be looking on Trip Advisor to help them make a final decision on where to stay.
With regard to the fishing on our lake we are also very surprised and disappointed with the lack of fish this season. Early on in the year we have received evidence of carp, tench, pike, roach and lots of tiny fish in the lake, though not as big as they were in previous years. (This is shown on our website). We are not sure why this is. We have taken advice from other fishing management companies and have received conflicting advice. We realise the swims have been disappointing this year, but this was mainly due to the extreme bad winter and spring we had earlier this year, and can only apologise that these swims were not up to standard in time for your stay. We are now maintaining the swims and grounds around the lake, and can assure you these will be maintained on a regular basis, now that we have dealt with our groundsmen team. We have now come to terms that our lake is by no means a competitive lake for the keen Angler, so we have adapted our website page accordingly. The lake is a good place as a nature reserve, a natural habitat for wild life and particularly bird watching and okay for the families who want to try their hand at fishing.

Again I sincerely apologise if you found the welcome reception not so welcoming - which again comes to a surprise to us, but without making to many excuses it is company policy that we do show all our guests around the cottages upon arrival, and if this is not possible straight away, due to an influx of other guests arriving at the same time, or guests arriving later in the day, we do try to meet up with the guests later on to complete registration, and run through procedures and check that our guests know how to use equipment around the cottages and know their way around the complex.

During the August period we had been meeting and greeting up to 12 groups of guests in one afternoon, which we found was difficult to manage everyone particularly when a few groups arrive at the same time. So as you rightly say in your review - peak season during August can be very busy as one would expect, but most certainly during the off peak season, you would receive our full attention - in fact we have found with some guests they don't actually want to be checked on or even want introductions upon arrival. They just want a quiet time away with no one bothering them.

Of course we are always available at all times if any of our guests need to speak to us about anything from a dead lightbulb to a change of bedding and also to discuss issues they may have with, in particular, the lake.

If you are coming here for the accommodation you will not be disappointed, spacious and luxurious. Set in a good location, with lots of nearby attractions and places to eat. Small amount of building work at entrance didn't bother us. Only downside to site is the lack of fish in the fishing lake, whilst at our week here no sign of fish was seen, so if you are looking for a fishing holiday avoid (keen carp angler).

After visiting lake view holidays with the family we where left divided upon our opinions. Lakeview offers great accommodation to a very high standard Although the grounds at the entrance do look like a building site. The section that has been completed has been done to a very high standard. We felt very welcomed and where given a tour of the house and the list of do's and dont's that was mentioned in another review which i felt was a tad over the top but didn't bother me so much.
The house itself was superb we could not have asked for nicer accommodation. You get all te usual TV CD player nice shower area Wi-fi. The only down side is you don't get a private garden but that did not bother us so much but bare this in mind if you like to sit out in the garden in private.
There is not a lot really to do if your with the family although there is plenty of space for the kids to run about and a fishing lake(we will come to that later) but nothing else on site. else so if your a family wanting entertainment then this probably isn't the place for you.
I brought some fishing equipment as i am a very keen angler and this was one of the reasons we choose lake view because we thought it offered good fishing. Unfortunately this wasn't to be the case. Only around half the pegs constructed where fish-able due the the overhanging threes you could not cast from the others and the lake is seriously in need of some life. I spoken to a couple of people while fishing there and apart from a couple of very small roach nothing was coming out and. There where no signs of any carp or bream that where mentioned in the brochure and no signs of any of them on the top which you would normally see on nice day this opinion was also shared by the other 2 chaps that where fishing. So if your considering this place as a holiday and the fishing is important then Avoid this place as you will be dissapointed there a better venues with fishing out there. However if you want a nice quite holiday somewhere piece full with good accommodation this could be the place for you.I feel that the holiday venue could be alot better and i am sure it will be once the work is completed and the lake stocked with fish.

However we are delighted you found the cottages comfortable and spacious with plenty of outside area for the children to run around. We are very aware there is not much else to do at Lakeview, but we are simply a well located base to stay while our guests visit all the local hotspots around Somerset. As we are literally 1 mile off Junction 24 of the M5 motorway this gives very easy access to get out and about, though when you are here you would not even realise the motorway was so close.

We are hoping to have a small hotel built on the same site in the near future, which will provide a good restaurant, bar and hopefully sporting and children's facilities. So please keep an eye on our website for updates.

Every kitchen & appliance you could ask for. Also, the service was superb - thank you to Christine Ingram!

Thank you for your lovely comments, we are absolutely delighted all your wedding guests including those who did not actually stay at the cottages, enjoyed their time here.

It was fun having you all and we are particularly pleased your post wedding BBQ party went extremely well on our grounds at the rear of the cottages for all of your (60+) wedding guests.

I hope we will see some of you again

We stayed here May half term with my parents and 2 kids (age 4&6). Accommodation is fantastic, finished to a very high standard within, kitchen very well equiped and DVD and CD player. Was surrprised to have a washing machine as well!
Lots of communication from Lakeview on days prior to arrival to establish arrival time.
Very detailed introduction to accommodation when shown round - I have never been shown how to use a cooker before!
Setting was very pretty with lake and canal with plenty of safe outside space to play, beware of goose poo though by the lake!
The play park is really useful and we made full use of this. There is a lovely walk down the canal, we did eat at boat & anncor however it is a limited menu, fine for 1 or 2 nights!
We selected this accomodation due to the places we were planning on visiting and although it seemed we had to go on M5 to go anywhere this was exactly what we wanted - somewhere where you are near enough to pop to the beach but in the countryside to walk and enjoy the outdoors at the same time.
Kids took bikes and there was a safe lock up which is a great facility to have.
I understand this development will be much bigger when building work has finished - it looks worse than it is and did not disrupt us at all - but was a shock on arrival to see a building site!

I would reccomend this as a lovely uk break with lots to do in surrounding area as long as you have your car & are happy to pop back on M5! We all had a great time :)

We have just returned from a New Year break in a 3 bed cottage (Terraced Hs) at Lakeview. The cottage was literally home from home, and very warm and clean. Christine is very helpful and clearly takes a pride in the site/accommodation and took quite a while to explain how to use everything, even down to the taps, cooker, heating etc etc - can't really complain at that though!

The play area looked good, if not a little small but it was too wet for our 2 yr to play on it so could do with being on harder ground rather than wet/muddy grass.

You could walk to the local pub, although we were told by the owner when we visited that he was about to shut, repoening in March! However, there was a gorgoeus little pub just over the island which did decent food, but not an ideal walk as you need to cross the M5 island.... if you don't mind travelling by car to places then I would highly recommend this holiday.

Room Tip: Ask to overlook the lake, we were and it was great. Also ask for a dishwasher - we were in a 3 bed...

On behalf of the Notaro family, I would like to thank you for your Review on Trip Advisor, apologies though for taking a while explaining how to operate things around the cottage, which I admit is quite tedious after the journey here, but in the past I have just left it to the guests finding their own way around the cottages on running the central heating, how to work the oven and the shower etc, to find they end up having to call me to ask how these things work!!

We appreciate what you say about the play area, but we have taken advice on the type of ground it should be for children. Also bearing in mind that most surrounding areas have been flooded out with all the rain we have all been experiencing lately. Hopefully if you returned later in the year you will see how much better the ground is.

We appreciate there is no other entertainment here, but we are a very good base of where you want to go in the area, and although we are only a minute's drive from the M5 - it cannot be seen or heard much at all.

We hope you will return sometime in the future, and if you do please call to arrange the preferred cottage. Thank you - Christine

I have been to Lakeview four times now and it is always spotlessly clean, with all the little touches of a hotel and yet the comfort of a home away from home. Christine, the manager, goes out of her way to make you feel welcome and setting is lovely, with the lake just outside the window, the canal nearby with a pub for lunch not too far along it! Excellent hotel for sunday lunch in the village too. The area is great too - coast, Quantocks, Exmoor and the Somerset Levels all close by and the journey from the South East is easy on the M4 and M5. The cottage is always lovely and warm, even when I have been down in December. The kitchen is well equipped, so no problem buying fresh food from Pynes in the village and cooking for ourselves. There is building work going on but it has never been a problem at all, in fact it was lovely in the morning to lay in bed and hear the birds on the lake, and I'm keen to see how the project develops. I've also looked over the adapted bungalows and they are just as well appointed and very well thought-out for wheelchair users. Lakeview is my favourite place to take a break and I would highly recommend it.
