In the interest of fairness, reviews of any hotel can only be realistically based on one’s own subjective standards and expectations. What appeals to one reviewer may not to another.
So we have just returned from a highly enjoyable weekend break at the hotel. This is an annual break shared by 4 couples. We look for good food, pleasant surroundings, comfortable rooms, a good bar, and a friendly welcome. We found it all at this hotel.
The reviewer had stayed here before, so had previous experience of the hotel. That said, when taking along others, a subsequent visit is not always guaranteed to live up to expectation and impress others. However, all couples were delighted by their stay in every way. The food was all excellent and reasonably priced (and I’m quite a critical reviewer believe me!). The breakfast, generous, freshly cooked and was served at a leisurely pace which suited us all. All rooms were well furnished and clean, and the beds were comfortable. The hotel charges are fair and reasonable – excellent for the standard provided. The hotel is in a prime position in the middle of the picturesque village of Dulverton. You can park right outside, or receive a free car park pass from reception to park just across the road.
The hosts are pleasant and very helpful. When the Thatcher’s cider ran out during the course of the evening (due in the main to our endeavours to drain it), another barrel was sourced locally within minutes.! That’s ‘Can do’ service in my book !!
So if you want “modern”, where all the rooms are the same whether you’re in Runcorn or Reading, then this hotel isn’t for you. If you want chintzy perfection, and thick pile carpets, then I’m sure there are other places on Exmoor charging double what you would pay here. And just remember, the hotel is in the middle of a village so of course there may be some noise, although there certainly wasn’t on both nights of our stay.
In my opinion, it would be missing the point to clinically list imperfections, “Four in a bed” style. At the end of the day, the hotel is what it is,..a quaint country village hotel with an abundance of charm, atmosphere and value. We’ll be back !!
