Two couples for Sunday lunch which was booked fairly late about 12 ish !! The service on arrival really attentive without being obtrusive nice friendly staff all set the tone.. The wine house wine really good price and at the price we were happy with so we had two bottles . The food was excellent as was the service the staff really attentive. The atmosphere was pleasant however I would say that there is a lot of wood about Nd perhaps if they painted soe colour into the room it would be even better as at the moment it's neither a cafe or a restaurant ... Just a bit too much wood on show I would suggest painting the wood around the bar and the little churchy alcove and open kitchen area. Loved the open kitchen .... We will be back with other friends really great find keep up the good work !!

Sunday lunch for 6 to celebrate my husband's birthday was a big success. A good choice of menu, as well as Sunday roasts, meant that there was something for everyone and we had trouble choosing! The waiting staff were very attentive but also discreet. The food was to die for, not the cheapest place to eat by any means but so worth the extra. At the end of our meal chef sent out a chocolate concoction with ice cream in the middle and a lit candle so we could sing happy birthday to my husband. The staff helped make his day very special.

We booked The Grange for a family birthday lunch, 26 guests aged 3-90. Service was very good, staff friendly, and there was something for everyone. This is a serious restaurant that can easily cope with small children and vegetarians. The new menu is carefully designed and food quality and presentation was excellent, but the prices, though not cheap, are very reasonable. Comparing notes, the standard seems to have got steadily better over the last two years.

I have been aware of The Grange since it opened and its local reputation for good quality food and service. Looking for somewhere to celebrate our anniversary, the menu was very appealing and so we booked.

On arrival I was a little taken aback to be greeted by staff dressed in jeans - and not even smart denim at that but scruffy, faded and well worn. However but we live in a diverse world and should not judge on first impressions. These impressions however were not improved on the arrival of our ordered G & T's with no ice and none offered so we had to ask.

A fifteen minute wait for our food order was followed swiftly by service of the wine, a Spanish white. This had been barely chilled and I should have sent back - but being "British" we never want to make a fuss and we were there to enjoy our evening.

A 30 minute wait then ensued for the arrival of our starters with no word of apology or explanation. The wait, I am sorry to say was not worth it. The seared scallops turned out to be 3 queen scallops, overcooked and lost in a morass of what was described as oven dried cherry tomatoes but in reality was cherry tomatoes slightly warmed in an oven. The scallops were tepid. My wife's spatchcock quail and duck liver parfait fared better but the promised salad turned out to be one inedible leaf and the caramelised onions nowhere to be seen.

On commenting to the waitress the G & T's were removed from our bill to compensate for the slow service. and we sat back and waited for our mains. The restaurant by now being a little quieter we thought meant that things could only get better.....

20 minutes later the mains arrived . These looked good.We both had gone for fish dishes and I can only conclude, based on the positive reviews on this site, that whoever was working that evening had no clue when it came to cooking fish. My wife passed me a piece of prawn from her zuppa di piscatore. It was overcooked, rubbery and had no flavour. The same was true for all the fish in this fish stew. My choice was the wood oven roasted sea bass. It was hot but unfortunately overcooked and dry. It lacked seasoning and the alleged garlic and chilli conspicuous by its absence. The coriander rice was also overcooked and mushy. We both ended up leaving our food half eaten. The waiter was sorry that the food had not been cooked to our taste.

We decided not to chance the desserts, telephoned for our taxi early and asked for the bill. To be fair, the scallops and the zuppa were taken off the bill - but it was not about the money but about the spoiling of the occasion.

The layout of the restaurant is such that you can see the kitchen area and staff. Possibly these were all students but even so one would expect there to be a head chef in attendance, making sure that overcooked and tasteless food did not go out to paying customers.

We won't be dining here again or recommending to anyone else.
