I stayed in one of the standard double rooms in the courtyard. The actual bar is lovely and the staff our welcoming however I was very disappointed with the room. The carpet was muddy and dirty and the shower had other people's hair still in it. The 'bathroom' was in a dinky cupboard-like room and so there was not much room to move about after getting out of the shower. There was an emergency light by the door which glowed bright green all day and night which caused problems trying to sleep. The courtyard was extremely loud until the bar closed and there was a feeling of lack of privacy and it was possible to hear the people next door snoring during the night. Lastly there was a distinct smell of sick in the corner of the room.

I would definately go and drink and socialise in the bar because it is amazingly decorated and I can't fault the breakfast but I would not stay in the rooms again and I do not think mine was worth £90.00 a night.

Went with my friends for the bank holiday break to this truly amazing Hotel. The staff were very friendly and the rooms were great..... :-) My very first visit to Somerset and thoroughly enjoyed Frome from the hustle and bustle of London. It's a shame we did not have a great weather to enjoy the courtyard. Will remember the visit as we all 3 had tattoo done just few doors away.

This is a challenging review to write. We want to be positive and supportive of a great hotel concept, but a number of things went against us.

We (wife and I) arrived on Saturday evening. We managed to park right outside on the road which was a good start. A friendly welcome adding to the care and attention shown in advance, and we were led to our room (number 1 at the front of the hotel) which was...eclectic and unusual to say the least. Large murals, polished plaster, distressed painting and light and dark colours. The modern wood flooring creaked with every step. The room lacked a chest of drawers for storage and was big enough for a sofa to provide living comfort.

Did it all work? We remain undecided! The bathroom was excellent, carrying on the theme from the living area (don't leave the window open though, pigeons can wonder in!). The tin bath was a great experience.

However, let's get the problem out of the way. The room was at the front of the hotel and as as a consequence, the Saturday night crowd in the pub (as that is what the Archangel is) ruined the nights sleep. The room is above the main entrance and the rowdy, well oiled smokers spent all night (until the pub eventually shut at 12.50) outside the window, a few feet below us. On top of that, the street was noisy until late as drinkers made their way home. If you like soap opera, listening in to personal conversations in slurred tones and stories of lost boyfriends may entertain. It wasn't for us. Sleep was almost impossible for a long while, for my wife in particular. We would have asked to move but the hotel was full. Very, very disappointing at any price.

The overall hotel is a fabulous building, full of age and history. The room, warm once the radiators were on, was a luxury room and it was certainly spacious and well equipped; the bed proved comfortable but the pillows were poor; lighting was good; and the speakers in the walls a nice touch. On the other hand, execution was poor generally with the small TV in a pointless place with a mess of exposed wires. The dark curtains were in desperate need of rehanging. It felt 90% done well but it felt like there may have been a rush to finish.

There was one cardinal sin for the modern age - the wifi barely worked in the room albeit it did in the bathroom. Frustrating and easily rectified.

Breakfast was excellent with friendly service and it was included in the £140 room rate.

We really wanted to like the Archangel - and there is a lot to like - but we can't recommend that room in particular, given the noise.

Room Tip: Absolutely not at the front of the hotel on a Saturday night.

We stayed at the Archangel on 19th April 2014. The room we had was in the Courtyard, ground floor, room 7. The rooms are nicely furnished. The room was very small but sufficient for our needs. The bathroom was small, the shower a good size, but the sink was not practical, although looked good. The bed was comfortable, although the scatter cushions could do with being cleaned. There was no fridge in the room so the drinks that were provided were not cool. The jars that were used for storing tea and sugar could do with being cleaned, so they looks like they have been refilled with fresh tea and sugar. There was virtually no soundproofing between us and the next room, we could hear our neighbour snoring during the night, and unfortunately their very unusual way of waking each other up by singing "Ding Dog The Witch Is Dead". The room above us was very much larger and had a fridge.
The owners are very friendly and welcoming. The breakfast was good.
I would say that this was good value for money, We would stay again but would either choose a room within the main hotel or request room 9.

Room Tip: Choose a room on the upper floor.

I booked this hotel whilst planning a trip to Longleat, and from those in the area the online pictures for Archangel looked stunning. The hotel is even better in reality, and I'm so pleased we chose to stay here.

The character of the old building has been balanced perfectly with modern touches and the standard double rooms which are a new addition leading of the lovely courtyard were beautiful. We instantly felt at home in our room and were warmly welcomed to the hotel by the staff, who made sure we got parked up round the back in their additional parking area.

As there was a large function booked into the restaurant on the night we were staying, I received a phone call the day before to ask if we needed a restaurant booking, which was thoughtful and we accepted. We had considered going out into Frome to eat but decided the restaurant menu sounded too good to miss. We had the beignets to share to begin, starters and a main, forgoing dessert as we couldn't narrow down our savoury choices! Felt very greedy but everything was delicious and we were well looked after. The atmosphere of the restaurant was nice in that it is set on a mezzanine above the bar, so that you are not cut off from the chatter of people enjoying themselves below but slightly removed so it is not overbearing. The decor throughout the hotel is beautiful.

The room was lovely, the bed cosy and comfortable and unlike other reviewers we had no trouble with any outside noise. Hotel was perfectly located for our needs and we only strayed out for a couple of drinks in Frome before our meal in the evening.

Breakfast was included in the stay and again there was a warm welcome before we were shown to a sunny breakfast room, which soon filled up. Great standard of food again and there was no rush as we approached check out time at 11am. The place has the feel of a family run business as the staff are genuinely helpful and friendly.

Would definitely stay here again if in this part of the country, really pleased with everything and just couldn't find a fault if I tried.
