We came as a couple (using a groupon voucher) for 2 nights to this very pretty location, the hotel is nestled within a steep sided combe with an attractive garden with some fine specimen trees.

The hotel had previously been a house and adjoining industrial buildings. All carefully restored to retain features where appropriate.

We arrived early for check-in, but no problem as we were offered tea and coffee while we waited for the few minutes it took for the room to be completed. We had been upgraded to the 'Garden Suite' (thank you!), which used to be an old tannery, we were very comfortable there.

Breakfast was excellent, as was the cream tea with champagne, (the best scones I've ever had). The evening meal was a bit mixed as our order was lost and we had to wait ages. I guess accidents happen, they were very apologetic.

All the staff we met were very friendly and helpful. We didn't see the rooms in the main part of the hotel so can't say anything about staying there. I'd be surprised if the floors didn't creak though, it's that sort of a building. We enjoyed our brief stay and would consider a return visit when we are in the area again.

The Groupon offer price seemed about right, the 'discounted from' price on Groupon would be excessive. I note that actual prices (from a web search) are nearer to the price we paid.

Dunster Castle is a 'must visit' if you're in the area, we also went to Coleridge's House, we'd expected it to be a short visit, but stayed an hour and a half, mainly due to the great welcome from the National Trust volunteers.

Room Tip: We're told rooms above the bar can be noisy if there is a group in. So might be worth avoiding t...

Stayed here a couple of weeks before Christmas. Beautiful setting and the secluded location was very impressive and striking. Internally the ground floor was nicely done and the restaurant very pleasant with a good standard of cuisine....if a touch on the pricey side.

Upstairs the decor went down a notch and the room was ordinary, and surprisingly without a bath. I was only on abusiness trip and wasn't going to kill a load of leisure time, but had I been there for longer the room would have been a disappointment: functional rather than indulgent.

Breakfast was best forgotten. Service was haphazard and chaotic, and the food looked and tasted rushed. I was the first down for breakfast, but it was at the stated start time, and yet the room was still beng set up. There was no shortage of staff just a shortage of co-ordination, and chunsurprisingly checking out then took an aeckout was similarly clumsy and slow.

I probably got an unusually poor experience given the reviews of others, but it was what it was.

Room Tip: Make sure it's got a bath!

We spent 3 nights here with our 11 month old. The staff were friendly and helpful. The breakfasts were fantastic and we like our breakfasts and have sampled far and wide! The room was spotless and the beds very comfortable.

The location is just beautiful. Lots of different walks are available from the front door and these could be long/short and strenuous/strolls. They have pink OS maps to borrow but orange OS is needed if you want to go into the hills safely so BYO.

Dinners were good but the menu didn't vary during our three day stay so worth checking if you're there for longer as you may want to eat out once/twice.

Must be honest, I would have felt we had overpaid if we paid the full room rate advertised on their website, which seems a bit steep.

We were looking for a relaxed, welcoming hotel with good food and drink (try the Exmoor gold) in a great location for outdoor stuff and found it. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: room 10 has a small additional room with a TV and sofa in it that is big enough for a travel cot. Th...

Were do I start, idyllic location, historic building, beautiful grounds, warm friendly staff, superb breakfast (and in my family we are big on breakfast), delightful restaurant (pricey but work every penny and decorated to a high standard throughout. We booked this hotel for the location originally, I had spent my childhood summer holidays in Somerset and want to return as and adult to relive these with my partner. The walking from the hotel is great for all levels, there are local pubs and lots of attractions but you will need a car in this location to see everything. Our room was beautiful and opened onto a view of the forest. The room was spacious and well decorated. The bathroom was large and had a modern double shower, this place is perfect for a couples weekend. I love this hotel and location, I cannot wait to go back!!

We spent two nights at this charming hotel. All the staff were very friendly and extremely helpful, nothing was too much trouble. We had a lovely, comfortable room and the food was delicious, especially the desserts. I had a wonderful massage in the spa. The surrounding area is beautiful and we will definitely be going back to Combe House again.

This is a simply glorious hotel. Our room was lovely, the food was great, the location was stunning, Gareth, the owner, was extremely helpful, as was Julie, who was on duty for much of the time we were there. The big plus for us was that the hotel is extremely dog friendly and our two cocker spaniels were able to join us in the bar for a cream tea! We will definitely return and would thoroughly recommend it. (By the way, the 'official' hotel photos are really accurate)

Loved it and can't wait to return!!!
An amazing old quirky building with sloping floors that make you feel you've had a drink when you haven't!
Gareth the owner is 1 of those people that makes you feel you want to go back for his hospitality!
My only recomendation would be a slightly more extensive menu (with a bit of spice!) Maybe a small daily specials board may help?!
However 10 out of 10 for the best cream tea I've ever had! Didn't think a champagne cream tea would work but it so DOES!! :)
