“Birthday celebration”
Reviewed 26 August 2014

I and my family visited this hotel for my son's 50th birthday this weekend. We stayed overnight and had a meal in the restaurant that evening. The rooms were excellent, and the food was also excellent. We arrived early so had lunch there, as well. All in all a very good experience and we would recommend this hotel to anyone who wanted to stay a night or two before going on to Devon or Cornwall. Despite the fact it was on a main road, the hotel itself was very quiet. Also the staff were lovely, from the girls on reception, to the waiting staff at tables in restaurant for the dinner, and also breakfast the next morning. Couldn't fault this hotel at all. It was our first visit, but we all enjoyed ourselves. Should add that breakfast was excellent with as much toast or coffee/tea that we wanted. Enjoyed the full English, but other options were available.

We found this a welcoming and professionally run establishment. The room was clean with a comfortable bed. It was similar to the better Best Western chain of hotels. We stayed one night as a stop over on the way to Cornwall for a holiday. For this purpose it was ideal being half way to our destination. The restaurant had a reasonable choice and I thought the food was good. I had a medley of fish with vegetables. My wife had duck with stir fry noodles. She thought the duck was rather undercooked and the stir fry too salty but to some extent this is a matter of taste. Breakfast was excellent with a good choice of cereals, fruit etc. with the usual choice of cooked items. I thought the scrambled egg particularly good. I thought the bed and breakfast rate at £98 was fairly high so value for money was only average. Nevertheless we would certainly stay here again because overall we thought it would be reliable.

I stayed here with my partner for one night costing £94 for us both with breakfast. The room was large, clean and comfortable. The staff were friendly and attentive. We had dinner while there and everything seemed fresh and worth the money.
The best part was breakfast. Huge choice and as much as you want served in the lovely bright dining room.
Shame there was no where to sit outside and enjoy the beautiful sunshine or the view of the lovely church opposite. Maybe some of that huge car park could be sacrificed.
Well done to all the staff, I would recommend a stay here.

Room Tip: We had room 18 which is at the end of an outside corridor on ground level. Nice and quiet.

Visited a few times now with friends for the steak and fish night. Always good value for money, friendly service and good food. Easy enough to pay a bit more for wine above house wine. Staff friendly just a shame it isn't used more, can't work out why maybe a bit of face lift would help.

Not a good experience. The rooms were large but the decor was hideous but more importantly the stink in the communal area and room was worse than a mass grave in the dessert!!! This is not a nice place to stay - one saving grace was the elderly lady waitress at breakfast who kept making jokes about sausages - wink, wink.

As Guest Relations representative, I am naturally concerned to read your comments. As majority of other reviews and guests regularly indicate, we do get things absolutely right in terms of excellent service and exceptional accommodation for the majority of the time. We are completely puzzled by your comments, simply because we have no trace of any such smell or of this being raised by any other guest or member of our team. I have now contacted you directly to follow up on all points. Please be assured of our very best intentions.

We had the pleasure of staying at the hotel for a one night stay in the area to see Rod Stewart in concert in Taunton. At first we were concerned that we were a little too far from the venue. We were made to feel very welcome by the team at the hotel, definately a home from home. Lovely big rooms very comfortable beds and a lovely breakfast in the morning. Very pleased we chose the Walnut Tree as we could not have been better cared for. Even the Night Porter played a part in the overall enjoyment of the trip. Well done the Walnut Tree family, and thank you!
