“Wonderful Weekend”
Reviewed 1 November 2013

We went for a relaxing weekend knowing that a terrible storm was forecast. We were not disappointed. Myrtle Cottage was exactly as advertised, which has not always been our experience of B and Bs. It was quaint, spotlessly clean, very welcoming and the breakfasts were amazing! Sausages and bacon to die for (and we are not big breakfast eaters) but these kept us going until dinnertime. Janet and Nigel are excellent hosts. They were able to recommend places to visit and could even provide maps and clear guidance of how to get there, as well as recommending good places to eat of an evening. Millers and the Ship were both excellent. We will definitely be going back to do the walks that the weather ruined and to stay again in such a great place run by great people.

Literally at the base of infamous Porlock Hill at the west end of the village of Porlock lies the thatched Myrtle Cottage daing from 1604. Hosts Janet and Nigel are both interesting characters and accommodating without being intrusive. The en-suite room that I had was quiet, comfortable and well furnished. Breakfast prepared by Janet was traditional and wholesome. A nice touch was the pot of tea that Nigel made for me upon arrival. His recommendation to dine at the nearby Ship Inn was appropriate as was his recommendations regarding their beers!

If there are downsides to staying at Myrtle Cottage they are to bend low and watch how you tread! Ancient doorways are low and there are small hidden steps to trip over without seeing them. However, these downsides are minor compared to the ambiance of this ancient building!

We had never stayed in Porlock but we are glad that we did.

Myrtle Cottage was recommended by good friends of ours and they get a Gold Star for their recommendation.

The cottage is old, very old, so expect low ceilings and quaint curves in the walls.

Nigel and Janet are a delightful couple who clearly enjoy what they do.

A BIG thanks to you both.

Joe & Michelle Xxx

Room Tip: The room we had was the smallest but we didn't suffer. Enjoy !

My husband and I took my mother on a trip down memory lane for a w/e in Porlock, we stayed at Myrtle Cottage.
It was excellent, our hosts could not have been kinder, even providing a hot water bottle when my mother got severe cramp.
We will definitely return. Their recommendations for dinner was spot on, all in all just what we needed.

Room Tip: Slightly uneven stairs for elderly folks.

Delightful few days with Janet and Nigel. Quirky corridors and rooms but nothing quirky about the breakfasts and the welcome. Lots of great walks nearby and excellent pubs and restaurants within 2 minutes walk. Highly recommended.

We loved our stay at Myrtle Cottage. We had a short break away with our 2 year old son and I can't rate highly enough how lovely the owners are; the breakfasts are outstanding and such a warm and cosy atmosphere and room to stay. We felt at home and well looked after. The owners were extremely accommodating and such a wonderful couple. It was just what we were looking for. Our son didn't even want to leave.....neither did we, as we could have quite happily stayed for longer.

NB) just to note we noticed that the 'poor' review posted on this property was given before the current owners took over and is not a reflection on the service and accommodation they provide.
