“An English Dream”
Reviewed 12 January 2013

A Mini, a Pole and a German - landed in the summer 2012 in this heavenly place by chance and the decision to depart was a hard one. We were directed to this marvellous place by a friend of the host Caroline, some miles away who was booked up - how lucky were we (!) to get here.

It all started with Caroline, the host and heart of the house, to wait in the pouring rain on the road to avoid us missing the house and to give us directions into the drive when arriving in a deep dark night during a rocking horrifiying downpour. There's a light. And in this manner it continued.

WE FELT PAMPERED.

WE FELT GOOD.

This is a heavenly place, the setting is staggering, the views are just unbelievable, the coastline like from a film, the house beautifully done, everything looks (and feels) as English as it can get (from the perspective of inhabitants of the continent). There is no way to mention all the treats we received, but that somebody lit us the fireplace in the middle of summer just because there was rain outside and this would finally fulfil the image we carry of an English paradise - this was like in a fairy-tale.

FAZIT: PERFECT.

We returned to Mariners Lodge as we loved it last time. It did not disappoint, we were welcomed back like old friends. We had a really comfortable couple of nights, the breakfast and dinners were delicious. The sun shone for the whole weekend. The location is perfect, views of the sea from the bedroom window and wonderful walks over beautiful Exmoor. Definitely recommend it if you are wanting home comforts, hot water and peace!

From stepping through the door to stepping out to go home you were welcomed in to a lovely home with warmth and kindness. Wet boots from walking were dried out over night and an amazing breakfast to set you up for a day out walking. As my friend and I had not see each other for some time we had mentioned that it could be a long night at the local pub. On our return there were glasses for our bottle of wine we had put out as well as crisps which finished of a great evening. Caroline was very considerate and ensured we had everything we could need. The views really have to be seen to be believed!

Room Tip: Both rooms are excellent with amazing views.

The very minute we crossed the threshold of Caroline and Rollo's abode, we knew we were in for a very pleasant stay. The restorative tea with the beautiful lemon cake was only the beginning of our culinary experience at Mariners Lodge - the supper was a pure delight, a 3 course meal composed of a scrumptious terrine, salmon served with hollandaise sauce and samphire to add to the regional flavour (gathered that day from the saltings just beyond the garden) and of course the next morning, a delicious breakfast made from organic produce bought from various friends:Henrietta's eggs, Percy's sausages etc. Everything was a feast not only for the stomach but also for the eyes. Nothing was a problem for our hosts Caroline and Rollo, they dried our shoes, came to fetch us from the pub when it rained and they regaled us with regional tales and local history. They are real ambassadors for Exmoor which they know well and truly love. The beautifully decorated interior and the views over the bay from the bedrooms must not be forgotten: it is cosy, interesting and very personal - a real home, with our hosts' ancestors looking over the guests in the dining room. If you manage to make Tiggy, the parrot, speak, please let us know: I’m sure that he has a few stories to tell - but for us, for the moment, he remains a very intriguing character. Paul and Odile

Room Tip: All excellent rooms

From the welcoming coffee and lemon drizzle cake our stay with Caroline and Rollo was relaxed and pleasureable. The room was beautifully furnished, the bed extremely comfortable and the view over the sea incomparable. Carolines breakfasts and dinner were outstanding and to be recommended. Also her local knowledge and suggestions for our walk were invaluable and added greatly to the whole experience. We wouldn't hesitate in returning and would recommend Mariners Lodge to all.

I cannot add anything that has not been said already, there are no more superlatives left! Quite the best B&B we have stayed in, and with Caroline's cooking she could give the nearby 'restaurant with rooms' serious competition, and come out on top.Someone once said 'there are no strangers here, just friends you have not met'. That just about sums up Caroline and Rollo's outlook and how we felt 2 minutes after arriving, if not sooner!

Room Tip: There are no bad rooms

From the stunning view, the "welcome" lemon cake, the marsh samphire garnish on the breakfast kippers, to the incredibly comfortable bed, everything was delightful. Caroline is the perfect host, very knowledgeable about the local flora and fauna and keen to make your stay the best possible.
Thank you,
Jo and Ian
