Perfectly nice hotel, slap-bang in the centre of Porlock. 7 of us stayed after walking the Coleridge Way. You could call the rooms either "dated" or "quaint" dependent on your point of view, but they were nicely furnished, clean, comfortable and they served a great breakfast.

The Hotel is centrally based in the heart of Porlock and the adverture which is Lorna Doone. For us the Hotel offered peace and tranquility, love the snug which on a rainey day would be a great place to watch the world go by, sitting in front of a lovely fireplace with a filling cream tea. The Hotel too me offered a very informal atmosphere and felt comfortable straight away. My Father was traveling with us and he was put in one of the spacious stable rooms, while my wife and I were on a first floor stable suite which was at the rear of the Hotel. For us its was about the staff. Mo, whom was on reception when we arrived was fantastic and very helpful, Andrew whom kept us furnished with either some great wines or a cup of tea if we prefered and the owners, Mr/s Tony & Dick Thornton whom are the warmest of people Iv'e ever met. I'd forgotten my map book and Tony lent me a local road map and pointed out all the places to go as we started out on our Lorna Doone adverture - Robbers Bridge,The Church at Ore, Doone Valley and so on. Other people staying there during our stay were from all walks of life, a group of 40 year old chaps on a biking holiday (very well behaved), a number of couples whom were there for Exmoor walking treks and lovely older lady from Bromley whom was staying on her own for a weeks Holiday and the Lorna Doone experience. Superb quality breakfast, lunch and evening meals and the menus offer great variety. Delightful cream teas, comfortable accomodation, delightful and helpful staff, overall a delightful stay at the 'Lorna Doone Hotel'

No hot water, turns out hot water on a timer and it is off during the day! Guests not informed about the timer. Hotel says they have wi-fi but it turns out it is only available in limited areas across building. Not available in our room. I made a cup of tea in my room and there were bits of milk floating in it. I checked the dates and the milk was out of date! The owner's seem to have lost their care and interest. It is the type of place where you have to clean your cup and cutlery before using them. It feels dirty. Thin duvet and pillows. No additional pillows. Woke up with stiff neck. Shame. Porlock is lovely and we will be going back, but we will be giving someone else, who cares and maintains a proper hotel our hard earned money.

Room was adequate, clean, homely but somewhat cluttered. Parking was adequate but not too easily accessible. Reception was friendly and the meal well presented and prepared. The name of the Hotel attracted us. We enjoyed the little nook to sit and read afford a pleasant retreat on a rainy day. Overall we had a pleasant stay but realized that with some fresh thinking and updating of the basic essentials like beds and bedding, decor, carpets and reducing the clutter this could be a real gem.

Room Tip: All rooms are upstairs and you may find it difficult is as like my wife we are no longer youngsters...

We came here for a crem tea with view of having an evening meal and maybe staying the night but after the cream tea we decided not to come back. Everywhere seemed a little grubby and tired looking as though it could do with a good clean. The cream tea was ok and the scones were fresh but the young man serving us seemed a bit disinterested and overall it wasn't the best. Having seen this we decided not to stay for a night or have dinner there. Disappointing but could be lovely with a bit of TLC .

Stopped by chance for lunch - which was excellent - and returned later to book a room based purely on the warm welcome we received at lunchtime and the quality of the food.

The welcome was just as warm later on - but it was Carnival Day and after booking in, we discovered that the excellent and varied menu nornally available had been replaced by a 'Carnival Curry'. Unfortunately neither of us like curry at all, but it was a choice between that or taking some crisps and a bottle of scotch back to our room. I felt afterwards that the crisps and scotch option might have been cheaper...... but we were driving the next day!

The room was across the yard, pleasant enough with a superbly comfortable bed which we couldn't fault. Perhaps a little large for the size of the room but there was at least two feet all the way round it.......and it was clean and warm.

The shower-room/toilet was frankly disappointing; not exactly dirty but not exactly clean either. Sink hot water through one of those awful electric things rather than a proper tap. Wondered why there was no 'built in' hot water?

But after all, it's not pretending to be anything other than a cheap country hotel and that's what it is; decor perhaps a little outdated but hey, I remember the 80's and in 1981 we'd have thought it was the last word in luxury.

Breakfast was good and kept us going right the way through till lunchtime.....

Perhaps it needs an update, perhaps just a spring clean, but times are tight and at the ridiculous low rate they charged us, going to be some time before there's enough to spare for improvements.

We wish them well - because a welcome and friendly atmosphere makes up for a good deal of shortcomings. See you again sometime - but not on Carnival Day!

Room Tip: Book in early for the best choice of room!
