“friendly place to stay”
Reviewed 30 April 2014

We booked in to Lorna Doone Hotel as a base for a couple of days. The rooms were comfortable without being over the top. The staff (Toni and Mo) were very friendly and helpful offering suggestions for our stay. The meals were exceptional both breakfast and dinners with the second night (Sunday) being the first BBQ the hotel had tried and used us taste testers, what can I say, they got it right first time and if they keep doing BBQ,s on a Sunday I'd say try it.
Thanks for the invite to the staff/family table for a bit of a talk and mingle, it was great and the wife wishes she had been there as well although we would probably still be there. Highly recommended. Only issue was the showers not being all that hot but they weren't that bad.

Room Tip: Stay on a BBQ night they are great.

Booked at short notice as Anniversary surprise. Easy to find, lovely room was spacious and quiet even though facing the main street. Welcome was excellent and everyone was really friendly. Food was well cooked and there was a good choice including lots locally sourced. We enjoyed the beer and cider. Really good value in a central location. Everyone in Porlock also very friendly.

This small, traditional hotel is situated in the middle of the peaceful village with excellent walks & drives all round. Breakfast is basic but tasty. Dinners very good. Old Dog found the stairs a bit steep and next time we'll go for a courtyard room

We have stayed at the Lorna Doone on several occassions and can't fault it. It's not 5 star but then neither are the prices and if you take advantage of the 2 for 1 deal over winter it is an absolute bargain. Toni and Mo make you feel very welcome from the moment you arrive, there is a cosy snug where you can curl up, with one of the many books provided, in front of the wood burner and laze away the afternoon eating cream tea's. The food at the Lorna Doone is also very good and inexpensive. On occassions when we've eaten out at another pub or restaurant in the village we've often returrned to the hotel to sit in front of the woodburner with a glass of port and a cheese plate, definately recommended. The location is fantastic too particularly if you like walking. The Lorna Doone has the relaxed atmosphere of being in your own home but with someone else doing the cooking, cleaning and washing up. A real treat for a weekend away.

Arriving on a sunny but cold afternoon we were shown to our stable room in the courtyard ..outside temperature being 6 degrees, there was no heating in the room for pre-booked arrival. The lady then switched on a tiny electric oil heater {portable} which made little if any difference to the freezing room.Dinner {which was compulsorary on the 2 for one deal} was a huge disappointment..vastly over priced , limited choice, and lacking in taste in our not at all fussy opinion...The following day we went out for a drive on beautiful Exmoor {the temperature now having dropped to 4 degrees and hail and wintery showers} only to return to find that the staff had been in to tidy our exceptionally small room and turned off the heater...Saving on energy bills!!!! For goodness sake!! Absolutely freezing we made our way to the excellent pub next door... Bliss ,warm and a friendly greeting where we enjoyed an excellent meal at around a third of the price of the hotel...Left straight after breakfast next morning , happy to be in the comfort and warmth of our car and heading back home... Never again! I could go on, but whats the point. lesson learned.

Room Tip: do not book stable room unless outside temp is above 18 degrees and you like very small room

We booked this hotel initially because it had a special offer -' two nights for the price of one' in the area we wanted to stay. What a gem it was. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome, nothing was too much trouble and for us it was perfect.

We stayed in room four which was clean, warm and cosy. The bed was the most comfortable we have ever slept in; to the point of being luxurious, we slept like logs. The bedroom is equipped with tea and coffee making facilities and en suite shower room. Iron and board are easily accessible just down the hall.

One of the things we loved most about the hotel was how quirky it was - nothing is uniform which gives it character and a nice feeling. Yes the parking is limited but this should be expected in the area it's in, however there is plenty of parking nearby and this should not be an issue.

The food was amazing!Part of the deal was to eat in the restaurant on one night we planned to do this but ate in there both nights because it was so good. We were served by Andrew who was polite, able to hold conversation and relate to the diners on an individual basis. Toni did the cooking - we wanted to take her home with us her food is second to none. My husband tried her Beef Creole - he said it tasted exactly the same as the Beef Creole he had had in Mauritius the year before. We tried pheasant, pork casserole, cottage pie, spicy prawns, goats cheese tart as well as various puds including tarte au citron, caramel apple pie and a cheesecake. There were a good variety of wines and the restaurant had lovely ambience.
Breakfast was just as good. With fruit juice, grapefruit, variety of cereals, toast and a choice of full english (and variants thereof) as well as kippers - which were delicious it set you up for the day. Toni and Mo ate breakfast with us and it was nice to have a morning chat before going out for the day.

The hotel was a good base to visit our beloved Exmoor. It is within easy reach of the the Doone Valley, Horner Woods, Bossington, Dunkery Beacon, Lynton and Lynmouth, Exmoor Zoo (which is well worth a visit - I hand fed wallabies there) anywhere in Exmoor really.

When we arrived home we found we had an anomaly on our bill. We contacted the hotel via email; received an email back quickly with an apology and a cheque had arrived in the post before we could blink. We have no problem with human error when it is dealt with so efficiently (and we weren't made to feel bad) and many big corporate hotels could take a leaf out of Mo and Toni's book on how to run a hotel.

We will definitely return to the Lorna Doone - we have fallen in love with it. Thank you Mo and Toni for sharing your gem with us.

Room Tip: room 4 is quiet and the bed is amazing! It is on the first floor and easily accessible.

Stayed here with two small children and my mum for two nights during half term. We stayed in courtyard room 5 which was lovely and clean. The breakfast and evening meal was good. Catered well for the children and the portion sizes were perfect. Beds were comfy
